I've got a bunch of magazines and ammo in a caliber that I don't need.
I have a new firearm In a different caliber.
I want to trade or sell (mags & ammo) I have, and get the mags and ammo to fit the new firearm.
I want to get what I need, sell things or trade them to get what I need.
How do I do this fairly?

It doesn't seem fair to use current pricing to sell... it feels wrong knowing that I paid X, charging double...
If I use old pricing, in today's terms, I would be giving it away, neither is fair.

I don't want to give stuff away, and I don't want to be a "CheaperThanDirt" type price-gouger.

When you buy, sell and trade, what's the best way to be fair? How do you do it best? I'd love your opinion...

Or am I just overthinking all of this?

Fair? nothing in life is fair. I judge anything I sell by two things. Current market value and how difficult will it be to replace should I want another.

List it in the classifieds for current market value. If you feel bad about that, subscribe and list it in the members only section for what you paid for it. ;)

I applaud you for that way of thinking, but the very definition of fair would be current market value of your goods traded or otherwise exchanged for current market value of what you want.
I'd call selling your goods at under market but higher than what you paid "more than fair!"

Fair? who knows these days. Some on here are awful quick to jump up and down screaming "Price Gouger!!!" when something they want sells for current market value. A lot of those same people are listing stuff for crackhead prices at the same time.

I think that posting something for current market value is totally fair. I also am happy to give a buddy a break. I am also happy to sell stuff cheap because I just want to clear off space on the bench (ahem....somebody buy my scope mounts!).

In your case, I'd figure out what it would cost to obtain what I want and price my stuff to match.

Assuming you are not planning your retirement date based on this....List it at whatever you think is a fair price or trade (ie you think you will feel good about getting that price).

The market will let you know if you were off by it either selling in 30 seconds (priced too low) or you having to bump it 48 times (priced too high or unpopular/unusual item).

If you are planning your retirement based on this you are either a hoarder and have way too many mags or you need to be looking for new work 😂🤣😂

If you sell stuff at a price someone is willing to pay, for an item that is completely optional to buy, your conscience is clear. What you paid last year is irrelevant. That’s pretty much the definition of fair today.

ok.
opinion.
"in general", for used
at least once items,
this is what i do:

1. if i want it GONE....free.
2. if it is not "worth it" anymore: 50% of value.
3. if it is to pay for something else: free market rates.

I would say price it at what you’re comfortable with. If it’s below current market snd above what you paid and you feel good about it, then go for it. No reason it can’t be a win win for both you (profit) and someone else getting a deal on something they want.

If you sell your stuff at your acquisition cost, will you be able to buy new stuff at a similarly-discounted price? No? Then sell your stuff at current prices and pay current prices for the stuff you want to buy.

Trades can be simpler; just decide on the value ratio of the stuff you have to the stuff you want, using either old prices or current prices.

This is why I can’t sell ammo to friends who are new gun owners. They don’t know any better but I know I paid 1/3 of what it cost today and I don’t feel right profiting off friends like that.

That said, you need to sell X to buy Y and it’s more efficient to sell vs trying to trade for the exact version, amount, and location Y that you want. This is why I very rarely trade.

Post it up as “500rd of X for $xxx or trade for 500rd of Y” and roll with it.

Because I really DON'T "need" anything firearms related, I've been stockpiling silver for the past year+, and to a lesser extent gold. Take a look here at the "spot" price of both presently, in U.S. dollars

NOW go to E-Bay, and put together ONE oz. of gold (1 coin, 2 coins, ten 1/10th oz. coins, 1 bar, etc.), or ONE oz. of silver (10 dimes, 4 quarters, a silver dollar, etc.) by ANY combination you like, and see what the CHEAPEST 1 oz. combo you can make is. 🤔 I'll GUARANTEE, it's nowhere NEAR spot price, and may be close to DOUBLE the spot price.

Now with "fair" thus established, YOUR stuff is worth exactly what someone will give for it - trade or cash - whereas the stuff YOU need, is worth whatever deal you can cut for it. ;) And thus has it always been; so shall it EVER be.

But I appreciate your honesty & sincerity - I hope I get to work a deal or buy something off you someday.

I’d probably opt for trading the ammo 1:1 (assuming either both are pistol or both are rifle), and then selling the mags. In the ad for the mags, you could also offer a realistic trade ratio…which may or may not be 1:1 depending on prices.

Posted the whole mess, checked prices and tried to offer a bunch of different combinations.
I won't make anything, won't cheat anyone, and however it works will work for me
Thanks again!,,

When I sell here or on CFF I have Never made a DIME in profit.....just not my way........I have a person that is both a Member of CFF and a Battery Oaks Alumni.....he is a flipper......he can no longer purchase Anything from me.
These are just rules for me.......do what You think is right......I have been Given thousands of dollars worth of equipment and have in turn given away thousands of dollars in equipment. When people give here they already know that their item is Not going to be done away with for a Dollar In Profit.....
I recently made a deal on here with a member for several thousands of dollars....he will leave here with Positive Equity....I'll see that he does.
I always turn my head like the RCA dog when I read of somebody selling something for $10-$50......Hellll, just give it to somebody that might be able to use it! .......That's all I got.....
