I have about 10 different ARs chambered in 5.56, 300bo, 308, and 6.5 Creedmoor. I've got them set up in rifle and pistol configurations for CQB, medium range, hunting, plinking, and long range. All of my bases are covered in the semi auto rifle department. I don't NEED another heavy .308 rifle. But, I WANT one, and I don't know why...

Many people think SCARs are ugly, but I think they are beautiful. I love the ACR style stock and oversized fore-end. I wish I could just buy an ACR style stock and put on an AR and a Stribog SP9A3...

If I buy a SCAR 17, it's not gonna get shot long range. I'll put a suppressor on it and set it up for HD. And, I'll shoot deer with it. But, my longest hunting shot is only about 50 yards... Why would anyone use a SCAR17 for HD and 50yd deer hunting? I already have several guns set up with optics and accessories that would do a better job at both those things... Why do HD with a long ass SCAR17 and suppressor when I could use my suppressed Stribog SP9A3, or suppressed MK23, or suppressed 300bo AR Pistol, or suppressed HK VP9T? I could have a different suppressed handgun in each hand! Or a different suppressed AR in each hand! (I know that's stupid and I wouldn't do that. But, I could.)

Why do I want to waste $3000+ on a SCAR17?

I have been looking at the PSA Jakl 308. I'd happily buy one of those and save $1k... But, there is no telling how long I will have to wait to get one (at least a year). And no one knows how much they will cost... And, the current generation of JAKLs in 5.56 are having lots of hiccups. Why would I wait a year to buy a new weapon which is guaranteed to have kinks that will need working out? Why not just spend the $3k and have a superior weapon in my hands right now?

SO, I'm asking y'all... Why do I want this thing?

If I don't get a Scar, what should I get instead?

If you really like over priced, heavy, inaccurate and finicky rifles, they’re perfect!

Don’t forget that you get to flex on the poors with your $50 magazines!

Yep... I've already had a couple people tell me about the lack of accuracy. I believe you.

And, I want to fire it suppressed, but I've also been reading online that the twist rate is less than optimal for subs and can lead to baffel strikes.

Again, why do I want this thing when I've already got weapons that are more accurate and run better suppressed...

I've even looked online to see if I could buy an ACR style stock to slap on one of my ARs... I don't see anything. And, that's silly anyway...

I'd love to hear your recommendations for better options.

Speaking for myself, the no longer produced Robinson Arms M96 Expeditionary rifle (semi clone of the Stoner rifle the SEALs used), and their XCR. And my personal pick would be an FN AR type, I own an FN A4, but it's a pick for practicality, AR parts are plentiful, SCAR parts, not so much, at least to my knowledge.

I like the longer rail and heavier profile barrel of the SCAR20S. If I was getting a 7.62 SCAR, I’d get that and have the barrel cut down

I've never heard of the M96 before. That is a good looking weapon!

A CZ Bren 2ms might scratch the itch. I love mine.
Good call. I looked at those, but they don't come in .308. I've already got AKs. I'm looking for that form factor in .308.

And remember that indigenous 308 AR type rifles are also proprietary, CZ Bren, FN SCAR, et al, are proprietary, and the usual parts are not always available (if they're ever available).
I know the SCAR, both light and heavy were fielded by us, but they weren't made general issue for a reason.

I want a SCAR 17 also, but for collecting - not for practical purposes. It was used by our troops for a time, so it's cool to me. Same reason I wanted an M41 Johnson and .45 Reising; not widely used, but somewhat rare, and used by our troops in war.

(I do have several Robinson M96's, and while never used by our troops, the Stoner 63 is my all-time favorite military arm and they're the closest I can get)

Maybe I'll just order a JAKL in 300bo from PSA. They have some BLEM complete Lowers in stock. I can order a BLEM complete lower, and a complete upper, and put them together for $950, plus tax... Maybe that would scratch the SCAR itch... But, I doubt it. It'll probably make me want a SCAR 17 more, and then I'll be saving another grand to buy the SCAR 17.

I don't think I'll stop wanting a SCAR 17 until I buy one. Inaccurate or not... It'll kill deer at 50yds. Hahahaha.

I ordered all the parts (minus a stripped lower) to build a PSA JAKL in 300bo with a 8.5" barrel. It'll all arrive at my house in a few days and I'll get a tax stamp for an SBR before assembling. I also picked out a Keymo Flash hider in 5/8x24 for my Sandman S and a Geissele trigger. We'll see how it all turns out... Watch it not run right. Hahaha. It's probably going to need some tweaking...

This should be fun... Maybe after throwing this together, I won't want a SCAR17 so badly...

At least it won't eat optics, which is something a SCAR will do.

What about a Garand in .308 or an Ishapore Jungle Carbine in 7.62x51

;)

@ronn47 That JC .308 is one I still kinda wish I had. I’d probably never shoot it but I still think about it. Kind of like my Mini-14 Ranch. Didn’t have a use for it, I just liked it.

Please remind me to stop selling my guns.

Anyways sorry for the off topic wandering

Way too much wood...

That's what she (never) said.

The JAKL looks cool, but I think it's like wanting a Harley and getting a medium Jap cruiser or a 1200 Sporty. Eventually you'll get the Road Glide, RK, Electra Glide, etc.

I have an ACR in 5.56, it does nothing to scratch the standard SCAR 17 itch.

I'm sure you are right on all three accounts.

This JAKL will be a stopgap measure to keep me company while waiting for a SCAR17 of a JAKL in 308... If this little JAKL runs well, I'll get a JAKL 308. If it's garbage, I'll save more money to get the SCAR17 which is most certainly a better weapon, I'm sure.

But, for me, half the fun is in the building and collecting. If it doesn't run well, then no big deal. I'll just buy a SCAR17 and hang this one on the wall somewhere.

I agree - I want a JAKL 5.56 AND a SCAR 17. Not sure why, but the 5.56 SCAR isn't really on my radar at all.

HK416/417.

If you are going to get a gun with pricey mags, at least get one that works worth a damn...

I neither like nor dislike the SCAR. I am aware of what others have said, and how many armories have them locked up and guys stick with the AR platform.

Dang, I was just about to ask if you thought a SCAR 16 would help scratch those itches.

Just keep an eye on gunbroker for a used SCAR... I got a great deal on mine (barely used, Belgian made, Geisselle trigger and 8 extra mags for under 3k).

They're a lot of fun, but if you're not already invested in .308 or aren't willing to have to throw down money (everything is expensive for them) then I'd say look elsewhere.

I own a lot of 308's and the 17s is definitely near the front of the pack from a fun perspective. The last in line? My Ar10 (borrring!).

No optic issues thus far, no accuracy issues thus far.
