Yeah, we shoot old, stinky, Civil War guns and artillery and it's a hoot. But this was the first full year back on the line with my dad who suffered a stroke and almost died from a bleeding ulcer in 2021. Another thing past my dad getting back on the firing line in 2022 was my oldest son came from Kansas to compete on our team with "Pawpaw" at the N-SSA Fall Nationals. He was only 1 year into his "retirement" after serving 20yr in the USAF. So we had 3 generations of our family on the line for muskets and carbines and that's not too unusual for the N-SSA. You won't find it in any other shooting competition anywhere. I don't know how 2023 will pan out since dad had a minor heart attack recently and he's seriously talking about stacking arms and only shooting his camera.

L2R front row- My 89yo dad, my son, and me in the glengarry. This pic was just after the carbine match.

Checking the schedule of events. Do we have enough time to go "sutlering" and maybe get a slider at the grill.

We're discussing strategy on the line for the smoothbore match. He's shooting an original 1819 Potsdam percussion conversion in .71cal. I'm shooting a repro 1842 Macon in 69cal. Something clicked, our squad cleaned the array, of the 12 pigeons, we mowed down 9 between the two of us.

Prior to the team matches, he needed some time to familiarize himself with the arms. He shot musket, carbine and smoothbore and crewed on the 6lb howitzer. Here my son is practicing with a 1863 Remington contract replica aka "Zouave". He picked up the technique quickly and was nailing stuff with it.

Sounds like a great time. I hope so get to see one of your shoots this year.

Is there a schedule of activities posted? Link?

There is a regional scheduled in Statesville if you'd like to come by.

Found the calendar.

Are these all open to the public to watch? Can't make the March one but maybe could April
Completely and totally open to the public and free. The big show is Spring and Fall Nationals in Winchester, but we do compete in smaller matches in Statesville several times per year. As part of our public outreach, we'll have a table at the Hickory Gun Show on 3/11. Come on by and introduce yerself.

We have an office in Winchester not far from the National Cemetery there. Mostly Civil War graves. I could probably justify a "work" trip one of those weekends.

I like the Scottish headgear
While only a couple Federal regiments had Scottish attire as their full dress parade uniforms, there were no documented Confederate however, our team is the Palmetto Sharpshooters. The original unit was recruited out of the 4th, 5th and 9th SC which had one year enlistments. Of those original regiments, all were raised from local SC militias in areas with very sizeable Scottish enclaves. So I wear the Glengarry in honor of my family and those original guys in the militias. The Glengarry as a cover dates to the 1790s and was a favorite item of military "undress" uniform all through the 1800s right up to the present.
