Does anyone know if the barrel was free floating or touching the stock when the rifle came from the factory? I bought one with a not so good bedding job so I removed it. Now there is a 1/16" gap between the stock and barrel at the forend. Don't know if that is correct or not.

Probably not floated. I have a few Remington smallbore target rifles that were contemporaries of the Win 75, and all were built with a “pressure pad” of walnut at the end of the stock that contacted the barrel.

I believe you are correct. After putting a straight edge in the channel, it seems to me there should be contact from about an inch of the front of the receiver all the way out. There is only one relatively small action screw and I doubt it could stabilize that heavy barrel if it wasn't touching the entire length. I'll fix it.

Thank you for the input.

I have one, and not free floated, but extremely nice rifles.

Thank you for the input. I'm trying to put the rifle back to it's original configuration and any information is appreciated.

If you need any pics or more info, let me know and I'll get mine out. It would be fun to see your pictures when you're done.

I appreciate the offer. I've got my barrel touching its full length now and the fit looks better. I'll try to get a couple shots posted soon.

It's been said that everytime I take a picture, I set photography back another 10 years. I'm just not good at it. Anyway, here's what I have now. I'm a shooter, or try to be, so I put the sights on that I like. A Gehmann rear iris with color disc's is on the Redfield 75 rear and an Anschutz globe on the front because I like the clear inserts. I'll probably put a Redfield
Olympic on the front eventually just for a more authentic look.

That looks fantastic and period correct. It's been so long I dont' recall if both of mine have the swept back bolt handle as yours does. These are just great, classic rifles.

It's clear this rifle found a good home! Thank you for the photo. I love old Winchesters.
