And during the day if a drone or a ground threat is lasing for rangefinding reasons? NODs won't help you, then, but this will...

Also, at night you can have it looking backward to pick up anything you might miss if lased/illuminated from behind and you happen to miss it in your limited FoV under NODs, or you happen to be using an admin light with NODs off, at the time.

It's got its place. It's likely also pretty cheap since it's fundamentally no more complicated than a radar detector...

I guess my concern is;
Does it detect across all wavelengths/power levels?
Does it produce a signature that can in turn itself be detected?

I'm not technical enough in this arena to know how comprehensive that may or may not be. I'm willing to bet that in detecting, it is probably also detectable (much like radar detectors), as I doubt it disposes of the energy it processes, and that would mean it has to release it post-processing.

I saw that, but having used things like a PERST and playing with Russian produced optics - it seems it a lot of claims with no follow through

Haha that validates their claims a bit, I wonder how they were getting into Russian hands seeing as how the Finns and the Russians don't exactly have the best history together
 
The capture was from a Wagner group soldier, so I'm guessing they have purchasing proxies given the nature of that group. Either that or the soldier purchased it, himself (and it clearly didn't help)...
 
Sounds like a series of photovoltaic cells behind an IR filter with a little smarts to tell direction based on which cell picks up the strongest signal. Would not be easily detectible by a standard NV device because itā€™s passive in IR spectrum, but probably gives off some heat in operation so a nice bouncing ball for thermals.
 
These have been around for a while. They are not for individual engagement more-so to let you know if an area you are in has been painted by IR not visible under nods for an air strike.
 
Most cell phones and video cameras can 'see' the IR lights. Good use for older devices.
 
Interesting. don't forget that not all sensors pick up all wavelengths. And don't forget that it is possible to get lasers on different wavelengths, along the lines of what @surrealone was getting at.
Totally possible that it was targeted to pick up a wavelength not in use by his own team. Maybe he's going fancy and using the harder to detect "covert" laser on his own rifle while also being able to see/detect enemy lasers of a different wavelength.
It took me surprisingly long to dig up even minimal information about this...
