Little short story y'all might enjoy.

Today I'm walking down a rock road in Croatian national forest trying to get in a new spot to sit for alittle while. When I hear a deer blow. I immediately look down wind. Nothing, I thought well what the hell. Turned upwind and there it was at 15 yards in thick brush, a deer. I stared and it, it stared at me. Long enough for me to say well it's not a buck, it's pretty close, screw it. So I put down my rifle and drew my pistol. Aimed for it's head BAM nothing, just stood there. Well hell BAM another one, nothing, just looking around confused. So I aimed alittle lower for the neck and dropped it on the third shot.

Unfortunately it ended up being a button buck (I know I suck I thought it was a doe)

CZ p01 speer gold dot 124 +p. Round didn't even exit, hit neck bone and I guess exploded. I was able to recover some jacket but that was all. So this off-season I'll either upgrade to 10mm or find some deer worthy 45acp. But I was able to check one off my bucket list. Deer kill with a handgun.

Hope everyone has had a good deer season. 2 deer 2 days in a row for me I'm done for the year.

I'll put it on the list. Does anyone have any personal experience with it? And am I right to assume 45 +p might be better than 9?

Good hunting. Different experience for me. Shot a 65-70 pound doe at around 40 yards with a 147 HST out of a Glock 26. She was running and I think I missed with my first shot but hit on the 2nd. It went all the way through her chest and exited with a decent sized hole. She made it about thirty yards, jumped a ditch and died. I probably couldn’t make the shot again, but I was impressed with the performance of the bullet. Granted I wouldn’t try to shoot one through the shoulder with it but this was a spur of the moment thing.

Your 9mm did what is was supposed to when you finally put it in the right spot, would a 45+P have made him any deader? Would you have not missed the first 2 shots if you had a 45+P? Caliber doesn't matter, to an extent, shot placement is the key.

Yes it would have.
Just the fact that a 45 +P whizzed by the deer, it would have fell down dead.

Dead is Dead, good job.

How’s the weather over there in Southeastern Europe?

HOT

Id probably miss with the 45 too, I'm not that great of a shot and I was nervous, plus it's kinda hard to hit a deer head. Or atleast it is in my experience, it's a small target that always seems to be moving.

Deer with a Glock 26 is amazing, wonder if it was just luck or the 147 vs 124 was the difference. It broke the neck bone on this shot but didn't make it much past that

Nice score first! Curious did you see where first shots hit or were they misses? Animal hid is tough and wondering if solid bullet would have been better choice for penetration than a hollow point to reach vitals.

Thank you, like I said it was a snap shot that I doubt I could do again. I don’t know if a 147 would do any better than you did. One difference from every ballistics test I’ve read is that +p typically expands more than standard velocity and therefore generates more resistance and doesn’t penetrate as deep. I don’t know how that factors striking bone which would limit expansion to some degree I’d think. If I were purposefully hunting deer with a 9mm pistol I think I’d try something like a Hornady XTP. They expand but not nearly as much as an HST or Gold Dot.

Noice!
Got my deer kill with a handgun not too long ago as well , 147 grain hst and it was an instant drop, small entry wound and exit wound was humongous(was a headshot)

I was so confused until I googled. I thought he was hunting over in Europe. 😂

Yeah…I was having a bit of fun with him…

Yep that spelling error has to live, should have read over my own post lol

Got my handgun kill several years ago with a TC in 44 mag. She fell quick with a double lung clean pass. I actually bought a couple of boxes of the Outdoorsman +P 9mm to take on a hog hunt for back-up down in Florida. Didn't get mauled by huge hogs like my dreams but the ammo shot and cycled fine in my old tank of a P-94.

Took my first handgun deer last year. Similar situation, thought it was a small doe, but turned out to be a button. Ruger GP100 in .357, with 158 grain soft points. Double lung shot at about 20 yards, full pass thru. Ran 40 yards and fell. Perfect!

Kudos on your first handgun killed deer.

I've been a dedicated handgun hunter since the mid 1980's. Well over 100 whitetails with a handgun. It gets a little easier once you gain the confidence in yourself and your equipment. But you STILL have to hunt properly,, be able to place your shots,, and most importantly, be willing to NOT shoot unless you know you can make a clean, ethical kill.

Nice shooting. My first with a handgun was in ‘88 using a Blackhawk 357 mag 158gr HP. Less then 20 feet from my stand. Next two were both taken in the late 90’s with a TC Patriot black powder 45 caliber muzzle loader pistol. Again both under 50’ away.
