Hey,

Does the Navy sill issue black Dixie Cup hats in black for the below deck gang?

My late Father in Law worked in damage control and was a member of the black gang during WWII.

Thing about getting one for his urn.

Thanks!

It was never issued in any color other than white. Some engine room guys and others dyed them black or dark blue. Some history info says that above-deck watched also wore them on watch at night because the white was thought to be too conspicuous. In any event everything I have read says it ended after WW2, but I can't confirm.

I'd just buy a white one and dye it. That's a very nice thing to do.
