Just got back from the range. My pistol shooting officially now sucks as my old ass eyes are getting worse. Has anyone used the big dot sights and have comments? Right eye astigmatism has gotten worse and with the lens implant in there they can do anything about it. Left eye sighting with the lens implant is better but its a pain in the ass. Keeping both eyes open works but my right eye still wants to be dominant.

Help an old man out. :(:(:(

I have astigmatism and wear corrective lenses.

Personal experience only, having used them, taught dozens of shooters, and competed for almost ten years across four states:

Some people like them. I loathe them. Dangerous game “express” sights work on a rifle because of the sight radius. Shotgun beads working on shotguns because of the sight radius. Those principles do not translate to a handgun. I have found them to be as useful as removing the rear sight.

If you have not tried a bright front sight (fiber optic or Trijicon XR) paired with a plain black, wide-notch rear, I highly recommend it. You’ll gain lots of front sight visibility, generous light bars for confirming alignment at speed, and the ability to make precise shots as needed. I wear corrective lenses and have astigmatism in both eyes. That set-up is what I have found to work best.

I found that the biggest detriment to Big Dots is they inculcate sloppy muscle memory. There’s not enough relationship between the front and rear sights to confirm a “perfect” sight picture. So, you lose out on the ability to train pure marksmanship (e.g. B8s at 25 yards). That type of shooting is critical for reinforcing the muscle memory of proper sight alignment—necessary to shoot a handgun target-focused or in low light.

What's your current sight set?

I had trouble shooting a glock 32 in 357 sig so i figured bigger sights would help... just like jrv said, it made my shooting much worse. I too went to the bright ameriglo front with black rear and while im no professional, i can usually hit close to where i aim which is better than i could say when i had those big dots on there. Good luck with your search, good news is you have lots of options to try out nowadays.

I have XS DXT2 on my Glock 19. Following instructions to the letter, they are perfect. For target accuracy, they're not so good. But for defensive shooting, for me they lead to quick acquisition, clean sight picture, excellent accuracy, and rapid follow-up.

I really like a gold bead and all black U notch rear. They are fast to pick up and pick up light well. By choosing the size of the dot they are more accurate for me than the XS style sights.

I also like the Ameriglos with the U notch and front nightsight with the orange outline. They shoot similar to the gold bead for me.

I don't have any problem with accuracy using big dots but I have a lot of durability issues. The white dot popped off of the front and the tritium lamp died in the replacement rear they sent me in less than a year after it died in the first rear. They have replaced for free each time but I am getting tired of dealing with it. I also don't care for the set screw rear...I prefer a solid friction fit.

I think the tritium died in the front once also.

In low light the silhouette makes alignment fairly easy even without working night sights.

I have a G-19 and a 17 with the XS Big dots on the fronts. The 19 wears a Triji HD rear, and that big white dot fits perfectly in the rear U of the HD. The 17 has a Ameriglo Cap rear, which fits very well also with the Big dot front. I do not like the rear site that comes with the XS system at all.
