My best friend and his wife came down from NY and spent a long weekend with us. They have never been to NC and It was great seeing them and catching up. My buddy is a newish Gun owner and he was chomping at the bit to go shoot a few of my toys. He had never shot an AR so we fixed that. He was easily able to put rounds on target at 85 yards using a Red dot.
We transferred to handguns and this is where things got interesting. He is used to shooting 5-7 yards at his indoor range but we were at 10.5 Yards. He started to shoot at his target and no hits. I grabbed his gun thinking something was wrong and fired one shot which hit right next to bullseye. We talked for a few minutes as I tried to figure out why he couldn’t hit his target. I asked about his sight picture and this is when he tells me that his buddy told him to just put the front sight on target and shoot. His buddy has been in the military so I am not sure if he heard wrong or if his buddy is an idiot. We were able to move up to 7 yards and he started getting hits as he practiced his sight picture.
On the way Home he asked me ”so you don’t need a gun license to shoot at a range?” I guess he thought that I could only take people who have a gun license to shoot with me. I said hell no, we actually have freedom here unlike NY. He asked me if I would take his wife the next day if she would go. said Yup.
In NY because of the SAFE act the only people who can shoot at a gun range are those who have a license to do so. So his wife who has never shot a gun has to go through the class, get printed and then apply and wait for her license before she can even shoot a gun to see if she is interested in owning one.
I took her sunday and started her off on my Ruger Mark 3 . Her hands were shaking she was so scared. She shot 10 rounds but didn’t hit her target. Had her switch to a full size silhouette and told her to relax and concentrate on sight picture. She put 10 in the middle of the chest. She switched to my buddy’s Glock 48 and put 10 more rounds in the chest. She was no longer shaking and my buddy was now hitting his target consistently.
Buddy said his wife started Filling out the permit papers when she got home. Guess I was a good teacher and hopefully I put her fears of guns behind her.

sorry this was long and if you want to bash Yankees you can just move on. These are the good ones that vote our way and appreciate our freedoms and our Country.

Well done!

The one's imported by business getting massive tax breaks aren't helping my vote
Sometimes it’s just better to let those thoughts rattle around in your head rather than just blurt them out.

I was kind of expecting the story to conclude that they realized how restricted their current home is, enjoyed freedom, and listed their house.
Good work winning over a newbie.

Why would we bash them? You didn't convince them to stay.

I'm kidding! :p You did a good thing, spreading knowledge and bringing more people into it.

Good to hear! Great job teaching them both!

I think I’ve shared before but when I moved here from NJ, the first thing I bought was a case of 100 30rd Pmags. It genuinely felt like I was doing something wrong having 30rd mags that were highly illegal in NJ. That fear is learned up North and learned well!

Ambassador Amps13! Good work.

I met some fellows from upstate NY last weekend when I was ML hunting. Great guys, and except for the accent, they could've been born and raised in the South.

There are good people everywhere, and good people from everywhere. The reverse is also true.

Good. Next time they're talking to their yuppie anti-gun friends who think that only psychos shoot guns, they'll have something to think about.

Nice job. I was the pres. of a 2000 member indoor/outdoor range in downstate NY as a side gig until a few months ago and my pending move to FREEDOM. My favorite part was bringing new people to the range and bringing them into the "fold".

It's not important, but people in NY can not handle handguns (even in gun stores) unless they have a pistol license. I believe this has been the way since 1911, nothing to do with the SAFE Act of 2013.
- A licensed person can shoot handguns with their teenage child, but once that child turns 21 they have to have a license to handle a handgun! Crazy.
- Downstate NY you can wait for more than 1 year to get your pistol license. This will be to/from range carry only. But most counties in NY (upstate) do give full-carry licenses. Those people can travel armed to counties that do not give full-carry licenses! There is no "class" for a license that I ever heard of, but each jurisdiction has its own rules, so who knows. It's a total mess up here.......
- As I'm sure you're completely aware of, using the front-sight-only for fast, close quarters combat shooting has been a popular method for as long as I can remember, similar to 'point shooting'. As part of an LE post incident 'shooting team', not one officer I interviewed said they used their rear sight for a sight picture when they discharged their handgun.

Not nit-picking or trying to “get ya”…but what about age 20?

Is it an under-21 law? Or is it a teenager law?

If it’s under-21, this next question doesn’t matter. What about ages 1-12? Can they shoot with you?

Genuinely curious about the laws in place.

On our 14th birthday you can shoot with an authorized person, including your folks. On your 21st birthday you can no longer shoot handguns without a license.....period.

Our range has approximately 100 children in our "Juniors" program. They are from 6 years old to 18, after that they have to join as a regular range member. The youngsters start with air rifles. We have a bunch of NRA RSO's for them so we ask that parents either just drop off the kids or sit in the clubhouse, etc. Once they hit 14 and with their parents permission, we give them another safety lecture/class on handgun use. Once they pass that we change their ID cards to "Handgun" and they can shoot with their parents/authorized person.

Upstate NY is as redneck as Alabama. Just NYC population that wins all the elections. All the [normal] city folks head upstate to buy their guns.

Heads up cuz, that “voting phenomenon” (one relatively small geographical area determining the fate and direction - straight Down and Leftard - of the rest of the state which was sane) is eggzackly what happened to MD (80’s) and most recently VA.

Thus, BloomTurd and $oro$ have turned their attention (and billion$) on us, here in NC …

PS - great thread and Great Job, @Amps 13!

Nice work!

My neighborhood has a lot of former NY and NJ folks. Several times family or friends of my neighbors have visited from those states and will be taken down to the woods at the end of the road for some pistol shooting and .22 rifles. It seems to be an amazing experience for them, who apparently have never handled firearms before. I hope they end up converted to firearms ownership.

I've taken most of the NJ in-laws that want to go. the ones that went loved it even if they have no plans of taking up the hobby. One of the nieces has a hub who is a flaming liberal got a look in my safe and looked horrified. The other niece is married to a Fla. man and they live in Tenn. I assumed he would want to go, but wanted nothing to do with it. Oh well!

Fla. man don't wanna blast away?

I’m not far away in the Quay, and we do have a bumper crop of transplants.

You are correct and they are from upstate NY.
I have heard that about LEO and Military training in close combat but I feel 10 yards Is still pretty close and if you are not hitting a paper target at that range we might have to utilize the rear sights a tad. Maybe us as more experienced shooters can be more accurate but I doubt he has shot more the 500 rounds.

Yes, I guess he 'heard' about front-sight-shooting and started with that, lol.

Same with southern Ohio. My last coach lives in Ohio….loves predator hunting with an ar and fishing as hobbies. Probably more redneck than me.
