Gang, we're firing up the forges here soon to make another run of knives. I thought I'd inquire if there is anything specific that the folks here would want to see come out of this batch.

Blade styles, handle styles, blade lengths, etc.

What say you all?

I love tanto blades. And I love BIG KNIVES.

Do you have photos of knives you've made before?

I've always liked Kephart pattern knifes with nice wood handle material.

Ive always been partial to Bowie style blades.
Would love to have a 'mini' version about 8" oal with a 4" blade, full tang, and some nice wood scales.

There's a pic heavy thread two or three below this one in the sponsors forum. We aren't stuck to any single style. Just kind of whatever the urge strikes us to make unless we have requests or custom orders.

A functional naval cutlass made from HY-80 steel!

The HY-80 can be forge laminated with another steel in order to give it a proper edge as a functional cutlass.

Why a cutlass and why HY-80?

I'm a retired submariner and all the submarines I served aboard used HY-80 hull steel.

;)

Man, I missed this thread:

Cool stuff. I like the rustic feel of it.

That's a super cool idea! Only issue there is we hand forge with no power tools. While the shop boss WILL do a sword, the way he says it is "Most people don't want to pay hand hammer rates for a sword. It'd be better for them from a shop with a power hammer."

Yeah, I figured that.

If it's a quality, functional sword, it would easily be four figures.

HY-80 steel is a tough steel, not a hard steel. And I don't know of it can be hardened, either. I suppose I could get a piece and play around with it to see.

What this probably means is it would have to be a folded steel blade to combine both toughness for blade strength and hardness for the durable edge. And that means more work.

Maybe even some experimenting to see what techniques work best.

If I had a few more bills paid off, I'd contact you and see what we're talking about, or what other avenues would be best for this.

The cutlass blade length for a modern CPO cutlass is 26 inches. But then there's the pommel, handle, and hand guard to make as well.

If I DO get funds freed up enough to seriously consider this, I would provide my own cutlass to serve as a guide in fabrication.
