I'm looking to get a rifle for hunting but the longest distance I have, that has a clear shot is about 50 yards. Since it's such a short distance would you rather have a bigger bullet with some umpfh or speed based? The rifle will be suppressed. Oh and I have a 300 blackout with a 10.5 inch barrel, would that work too?? I wasn't sure about using subsonic rounds and bullet expansion. Thanks for any help!!

awesome!!!! what sub rounds are you using? Also I'm assuming shoulder shots are not an issue either?

If I can get my lies straight, I think these were the 187gr PNW (Gemtech) rounds.

I haven't tried the literal shoulder shot, but I did kill two deer with the same ammo with a lower lung/heart shot. What I didn't like about that was having to trail them. Started neck shots the season after.

This was a 200lb six pt. shot with the same ammo in the lungs. Ran about 80 or so yards through some thick stuff. It was also the first deer I shot with subs. He was about 25yds away and I could actually hear him wheezing when he ran off. It was the neatest thing.

How about the .350 Legend ? Anyone have one and has an opinion? It seems the ammo is cheap and readily available.

6.5 Grendel works pretty well too. As would a .3030, but I don't think thats what your looking for.

I'll be using my suppressed 8.5" .300BLK for big Missouri whitetail. You'll be GTG with either supers or subs.

Need to polish up my pistol chops & get serious about hunting with my .41 Mags.

Woods here are just as thick as I used to hunt with @RR , so anything I can see is gonna be inside 25 yds, if not much closer.

Suppressed 10.5" AR pistol in .223 Wylde, using Federal Fusion: 1630097140682.png

Took a 9 pt last year at roughly 70 yds.

The OP said he wants a 50 yard rifle.

It's as if y'all are workin' hard not to mention 30-30... jus' sayin'!

Oops... it was mentioned above, but why isn't that what he's lookin' for? Are we talkin' only what can be built on an AR platform?

SKS or a bolt in 7.62x39

BTW, remember @Michael458 said he's been real impressed with the performance of full power 300 BLK... he's certainly got a hunter's perspective!

Indeed, this is a very true statement.............While I do not hunt deer, and retired from other hunting for a few years now, I load and shoot 300 BLK quite a bit, and we designed a serious bullet for it, mentioned above the 100 FB Raptor from CEB. Its just plain WICKED........ it is very popular with some of my friends throughout the country and very popular especially with the kids. I have a friend who's 10 year old has taken deer, alligator, and even a large black bear with 300 BLK and the 100 FB Raptor with extreme success........ and there are many many others that have been successful with it as well....... I have not one report where anyone had to trail or have a big followup, all the reports I have have been DRT on the spot. Even the black bear was DRT.............

I don't do subsonic in 300 BLK. The load I use with the 100 Raptors runs the bullet at 2550 fps in most all 16 inch guns, 10.5 inch guns run 2370-2390 fps.........

I see someone mentioned the 110 Barnes TAC, this is also a very good bullet. While I don't have any of my folks that have used it in the field reporting back, it tests very good here, and I would not hesitate to recommend it as well. I don't think its as good as the 100 Raptor for extreme terminal performance, but its still a very good bullet, and most of the time easily available.

Below is the 100 Raptor without Talon Tips loaded in 30/30, with 300 BLK and 308 Winchester alongside also loaded with 100 Raptors that are Talon Tipped.............

This season I plan to use 100g Raptors.

I would like to hear of your success this year with the bullet................Do keep us posted on that.........Do some internal studies as well if you can..... I promise it will be enlightening..............

The 100 FB Raptor is also my main 308 Winchester bullet.............

And, 300 Winchester and 7.62X40...........................

Yes it's probably overkill but I've been looking at these. 450 Bushmaster - which is really designed to shoot out of an AR. They are a 200yd round at most. SD is terrible because of the large caliber and light bullet weight, but would take an Elk at 50yds. They basically shoot 45 handgun bullets (bullets, not rounds).

I'm gonna have to try some raptors but likely not til at least next season. All my gear is setup for the 110 gr TacTX. And I just won't have time this year to load any and change up. @Michael458 Do you have a preferred powder? I've been using Lil Gun in .300BLK, when I don't just shoot factory ammo.

Every single deer I've shot with the Barnes has collapsed in it's tracks, save one doe whose death spasm bounded her into the base of a tree a few yards from where she was hit.

I think @BurnedOutGeek posted pics of the carnage that was field dressing her. Bullet entered to one side of her spine and crossed her chest cavity exiting under the opposite foreleg. She was almost directly under me.

Sounds like the Raptors do at least as well or better!

Ima be needen a sampler of dem Thurty Thurties 🙋‍♀️

I am about 99.9% sure you already have them in hand, at your place, and I think maybe with one of my 30/30s..............You need to do a search of..........I betcha

@Michael458 Do you have a preferred powder?
Indeed I do..... WW 296. I also have pressure data, keep all 300 BLK to less than 55000 PSI, with very very few exceptions. Your Barnes TAC is a favorite of mine as well, I don't have it elevated to Raptor Status, but it takes a close #2 seat at the table. With almost all my 300 BLK firearms, the 110 Barnes TAC load and my 100 FB Raptor load are the same, or close enough POI at 50 yards that one is not concerned about changing sight in...... I run 19.5/WW 296 with the 110 Barnes TAC at 2380 to 2405 fps in 16 inch guns, this is one of my exceptions, at 56000 PSI. Even 19.3-19.4 would bring it down to 55000 I am sure. Early tests with this bullet gave some lower results at 19.5 WW 296 conducted in 2016.

The 100 FB Raptors run on 20.3/WW 296 for years of data running in the low 54000 PSI range........... this is 2550-2575 fps in 16 inch guns..........

Recently tested not long ago some LilGun with 110 TSX. at 19/Lilgun I hit 2353 fps at 47000 PSI. But, the Extreme Spreads in both velocity and pressures were totally unacceptable, especially with the pressures. In other tests in 2015 and 2016 I also worked with some LilGun, and had the same insane Extreme Spreads with Pressures...... Very unacceptable. WW 296 has not behaved in that manner in 300 BLK. I would endeavor to change my powder in 300 BLK to WW 296 if you can.

Upping the cartridge just slightly with the larger capacity 7.62X40, it runs extremely well on LilGun and gives excellent results.............. But not 300 BLK......... Rather odd, same case, just a tad longer...........

I bought one to hunt suppressed, haven’t shot it yet.

thanks everyone for chiming in!!! I think I'm wide open on calibers, bolt or semiauto :p I've got a sandman S 30 cal can coming in, so I was gonna get something that it was compatible with. I've got 3 stripped multi-cal lowers, that I could use to build one, but don't mind a bolt action either. Thank you all for the suggestions!

44 mag anchors them at 50 yds.
It still amazes me how well it does the job on whitetail.
Tough to suppress though.
You've got a short lever 44 that is suppressed, don't you? Did you Form 1 a can or go commercial?
I have an SBR'd contender frame and a little 44 mag barrel. I thought about doing a monster reflex type form 1 tube for it.

Thanks for linking that thread. Lots of good info.

Your current setup is fine for medium game, the 110-125 grain hunting supersonic ammo is excellent.

Do you still use Reloder 7 with that Raptor?
I do. While that is not a common 308 Winchester powder, and it is hateful because of the burn rate changes from one canister to the next, causing me to have to blend many pounds together making a batch.... it still is my choice because of the variety of 308s I shoot. It simply performs best across the board with the lighter 100 Raptors and shorter barrels that I run on some guns.............If I was running one or two 308 rifles, then I have better loads that I could tailor to that particular rifle, but running several different guns is a different story.......... RL 7 just happens do meet those needs...........
