2023-24 edition animal harvest pic thread.

Nothing to brag about but got this doe this evening in the corn field that I hunt, at about 115 yds. She fell in cockle burrs and it took about 10 minutes to get all of them picked off of her once I had her loaded up. I didn't want to bring any of them home.

The corn in this field did so poorly this year, all the cockle burrs probably got all the nutrients, that my cousin that farms it did not even waste fuel to cut it, so I bush hogged the whole field last Monday so I would be able to hunt it. 7 acres of 10' tall corn stalks and thick cockle burrs takes a while to cut with a 5' bush hog.

Snuck out to the Jordan Lake gamelands this morning before work. Got my hang on stand up with the wind right in my face. All I was seeing was squirrels. Right after sunrise my bladder was about to pop. Forgot my empty Gatorade bottle, figured with the good wind I had I'd just stand up and let it flow. Bout a minute or two later I heard leaves crunching behind me. I figured it was a squirrel cause ain't no way a deer gonna come in from down wind of me right after I peed out the stand. I turned and looked anyways and there this guy was practically under my stand. I let him get about 20 yards and dropped him.

That’s a long legged deer!

so, you just gonna through a pic of a 11/12/13 pointer up here and leave us hanging? A few details would be nice. NC or out of state??
Haha NC Rockingham county. I’ve been eyeing this one and another just waiting for my opportunity. He came in following a doe around 8 o’clock yesterday morning. For the first few minutes all I could see through the pine thicket was his breath. He was watching his doe that was already in front of me. He made a 20 yard advance towards her with a charge and a snort wheeze. He was out in front of me at this point and she had went straight away from me. He was looking the other direction towards her and that’s all she wrote. Grandfathers Glenfield 3030 went straight through with a double lung shot at about 40 yards broadside. He went about 35 or so yards downhill and right onto my fourwheeler path. Couldn’t have happened any better. This is the first Buck I’ve taken during the rut, pretty cool to see all the action. I’m calling him an 11 pointer although he’s got a little kicker on his right base.

Cool story. Very nice deer.

Rockingham gets a week jump on us with rifle.

I go walking into my stand this afternoon and the idiot down on the creek is out with some kind of brush clearing grinder thing. Yeah, helping screw up another deer season being a knucklehead. I'm generally not one to tell other people what to do on their property. But none of the neighbors like him because of stuff like this. And I'm pretty sure they are the ones that put the blind up on my property. So freaking annoyed.

But apparently I now have turkeys on my property. So there is that I guess.

Didn't get anything in the mountains this weekend so I went back to my cousin's farm in Rowan Co. this morning. Got this guy early and was home by 7:20. First broadside shot was a high double lung at about 150 yds and he ran about 10 yards toward me and stopped broadside again, so I put another round in his neck and he flopped. Big body 8 pointer with heavy fat inside and out. 6.8 SPC with S&B 110 gr PTS.

Another victim of a "black AR rifle" that has no sporting use and only good for killing. That rifle has killed 30-35 deer so far, between me, my wife, son and daughter.

165 lbs 8 pointer. Came in Monday morning around 7:45 am.
I don’t know what is going on because the deer were not moving in general. I saw this and a spike buck and only heard 2 shots on opening day. Normally it’s like a war zone out there.

Culled this guy after seeing him 3 times this morning. He was trailing a doe that had crossed the field at about 150 yds to my left and stopped. I hit the doe bleat can and he turned and came running right in front of my stand. Hit the can again and he stopped about 35 yds in front of me. Base of the neck/front of shoulder shot, he donkey kicked and stumbled about 5 yds before piling up. Jellied both lungs and took out the top of the heart.

When I opened the door of my stand to climb down, there was a spike about 10 yds behind my stand in the woods standing broadside, probably looking for the doe bleating. First time I have ever had any deer respond to the bleat call.

My cousin is wanting the deer thinned out on the farm, so this is 3 so far. Now it's time for my wife to get a few, but she will not get up early to morning hunt, just evening hunts.

Anyone having excess deer they want taken, I'm looking for places to hunt, preferably within an hour of 27041

Got these guys ( #1,6pts #2, 5pts) with the smoke stick about 10 days ago. First one walked up and gave me a nice broadside at about 50 yds. Waited 15 minutes and while walking to it the other guy showed about 40yds out. Ducked behind a tree to reload. Can't believe that he didn't see me with all the fidgeting going on to pour measure stuff ram and cap. He turned broadside too. Both only walked about 20yds and dropped. Long day afterwards. Rifle is Wolf 50 cal. using a .45 sabot 240 JHP over 90 guns pyrodex.

My Daughter and my middle granddaughter each got their first deer, using the same 300 Blackouts as my other grandkids have used.
My 11 yr old grandson guided my daughter. She never showed any interest growing up.
That makes 100% of the family successful hunters! My son in law said every one was a heart shot, no tracking needed.

I killed 2 in one morning. Never again.

I shot two at the same time. Well, maybe 5 or 10 seconds apart. Thankfully, I had someone else with me to help drag. It was a 20 minute drag to where we could get the truck to them. At that point, it was a half mile walk to the truck

I'll call him "Toast." Not because he's been dispatched, but because he literally popped up in front of me.

He was the fourth buck I saw this morning. He wasn't the biggest, but he was the one that presented a shot.

So I'm looking over a cut over field with year old planted pines. I have a 180° field of view. I guess that's how you say it. I can look to my 3 o'clock and my 9 o'clock and everything in between.

I'm scanning and this dude was standing not 50yds in front of me. I didn't see him come in from my right, left, or even under me. It was like he just appeared.

Here's a pic I took about 30 minutes before. This doe was about 100yds out, but I saw her enter the field from the left, walk about a third of the way across, and then walked back to where she came from.

It's the buck that had me baffled.

They can be sneaky! What bullet were you shooting this time?
