2023 Weight Loss Thread!

What kind of scale are y'all using? I use two, an analog and digital. They are never the same so I average the two. But I find them dubious. I did not lose 7 pounds in a week.

Idk what brand I use, but it's an electronic scale. I always use the same scale for consistency.

We have calibrated scales in the shipping department at work, and those are within a couple pounds of what I use at home.

I have yo-yo’d for years, ever since I was younger. It’s generally easy for me to drop the pounds, so I’m not as worried about that part… where I struggle and thus my goal this year is to actually keep it off and not yo-yo into the next year. I am currently around 216 and plan to drop to 200. In general I plan to stay away from fast food and pick up the pace and dedication regarding exercise. When it comes to eating, I set a diet (low fat, low carb, high protein and any green veg) and take the mental approach…. “If I can’t control what I put in my own mouth, how can I expect to control anything else in my life”….

But.. I will be visiting some ma and pa, red hotdog stands along the way… everyone needs a cheat day, here and there. 🌭
I was down to 209, as I cut out all fast food, until Saturday. Now up 1.5lbs after my cheat day. Crickets Grill in Smithfield put a major dent in the plan . 😞.

Don't worry about day-to-day weight. That fluctuates. Pick a day and weigh yourself once a week. It's not uncommon for me to weigh 1.5-2lb less in the morning than the night before, or 2lb heavier one day and then down 3lb the next. Your body retains water, glycogen, all kinds of stuff. You gotta zoom out to get the overall view.

We have had the same analog for 20+ years. Added a digital last year. Usually within a pound of each other, but both register differently from one time to the next in the same weigh session. I have to step on and off the analog 3 or 4 times before it settles up and reads the same. That is the number I use.

Monday’s weigh in settled in at 282. Down 4 pounds from last week. 18 total. Goal is to get below 250 by July, when we head back to the Bob Marshall for another backpacking trip. I am so stoked - more so than even last year.

My digital scale is closer to the hospital scale. What's funny is when I go, I get weighed twice: at the clinic, then a couple hours later before chemo. And those are always about 2 pounds different.

279 yesterday morning. Down a pants size and into a couple belts I haven’t fit in for years. Feels great to be wearing some smaller pants that feel just a touch snug, rather than wearing the old clothes that were so baggy I felt like MC Hammer.

183.92 at the doc's office today; digital scale had me at 183.8 on Monday, so they correlate very strongly.

I've never had home scales that correlated with the doctor's like that.

The clinic scale is usually about a pound and a half heavier. This week was dead on. I like the reading of my old-school scale better, but the digital scale seems to be more reliable.

Weight has not dropped as I had hoped but then again, does it ever?

I have noticed in the last week or two my clothes are not as tight, certainly not baggy like @cubrock said. I did wear pair of overalls last week that I've had since either right before or after I got married, in 1988, and I buttoned all three buttons, one was missing.

I started the year around 216, at 197 now, trying for 175. So far its just been restriction of my diet, mainly no sugary drinks and snacks. Dr Pepper Zero Sugar is the greatest thing to happen for me during this.

At 40 your testosterone levels really start dropping. That makes losing weight and gaining muscle that much more difficult, and your metabolism continues to slow. At 38, it will seem hard, and you are right: it will never be easier than it is right now. BUT: I am 54, and others here are older than me, and we're all getting after it. You can, too.

I had to turn mine down some, I'm 42, and I was round 1400... should be 1200ish now, I will know in a week or 2.

My last scale reading had me up about 4 pounds (in a week). NO way that is accurate, so I am not too worried. Clothes fit exactly the same. Doc said I could stand to gain a couple, but I don't think so.

Down 30 pounds since jan 3 ,
Sad part is I've got 90 more to go
You CAN do it! I thought it was insurmountable too. Consistency and honesty are the orders of the day.

236 for me this morning. My progress has slowed from about a pound a week to about a pound every two weeks. Honestly it's probably time for me to start transitioning into maintenance mode and lifting to get stronger.

Over time the body adapts. That's why people who are 600# will lose, like, 80# a month for a couple months then drop off dramatically. Stay with it.

Weights will help, too. You don't need to life a lot or heavy. Lifting burns more calories over a longer period of time.

Guess I'm officially joining in this one. Even though my weight has plateaued for a a while, my A1C's kept creeping up and I am now Type 2 diabetic. Need to start losing now, though my endo is going to prescribe Ozempic or similar class of drug to help control the blood sugar and hopefully reduce appetite in a couple of weeks.

Portion control is my #1 problem, meal prep is #2. I'm a bad stress eater, and my wife hates to cook, which means if I haven't prepped meals for the week or remembered to defrost something, we end up ordering delivery 1-2 nights a week.

I'm 15 pounds down at this point. Slow but steady progress. Struggling with energy level with the calorie deficit. Thought my body may adjust by now but my fuel tank isn't what I'm accustomed to.
It'll get better. First couple months was the hardest while you re-learn how to deal with smaller portions. I had a lot of headaches, stomach rumbling, and general grumpiness associated with it.

235 the other morning. 2lb away from "Overweight" instead of "Obese"

Down about 5 lbs so far. A little disheartening that it's not coming off as quickly as it used to, but progress is progress, and I have a much better handle on my eating habits that should be less tempting to deviate from once I start the injections.

Just my $0.02, but the only way to achieve that amount of weight loss in a few months is to do it dangerously. I started at 338, and am currently 233. That took a year of being very diligent.

Start with a TDEE calculator to understand how many calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight, then start eating less than that. https://tdeecalculator.net/ I would avoid dropping below 2000cal/day if it were me. I did 1700 for awhile and really wish I hadn't, I felt bad and had some other issues that cleared up once I started eating 2100-2200/day.

I'm no dietician or physician, just relating what worked for me.

Track what you eat using something like the LoseIt app, and most importantly, be honest with yourself about what you're putting in your body.
You aren't trying to lose weight, you're trying to change your lifestyle and reframe your relationship with food.

I would agree, my thoughts overzealous because of my limited mobility and I was just dreaming. If I make 300 I will be happy. I am not able to exercise as I-would like so calorie reduction will be a big thing for me.

Calorie reduction is 90% of weight loss. Exercise definitely helps put more calories in the bank so to speak, but you can't outrun a bad diet.

You can 'not' exercise and lose weight, but exercising does speed it up, and has sooooooo many other health benefits. As esteemed colleague @Sigogglin said, you can't outrun a bad diet. Aim for a pound a week, two if you are ambitious and disciplined. Don't try to lose too much too fast or you'll just sabotage yourself. Don't weigh yourself everyday, once a week is fine. Same day of the week, same time, same place, eliminate as many variables as you can.

You did not put that weight on overnight, you're not going to lose it overnight. But you WILL lose it. Why? You mean too much to too many people--including us--to not do this.

Semper Fi.
