You may hear repeaters hundreds of miles away on 2M FM. The furthest I've made repeater contact on FM is 439 miles, from Mint Hill to a NJ repeater. These conditions can be a lot of fun. Many people on repeaters are unaware, so when you come on a repeater in MD, they be like "you're where?".
2M SSB will be many hundreds of miles today, but best done using a horizontal polarization antenna. Most operators on 2M SSB will be on beam antennas. You will be at a 20db disadvantage if on a vertical antenna, but do it anyway. These conditions will overcome many usual disabilities.
