A serious question about long range shooting

Each persoyn situation and context differs. About 99% of my shooting of handgun. I don't even bother taking a rifle on most of my range trips. I also live in the suburbs and the longest shot I'd probably have to take in non-SHTF is the length of a grocery store aisle. I also can't carry a rifle without having at least half my nieghbors call the local PD. Considering those factors, coupled with a limited shooting schedule, training past even 100 yards (actually training, not plinking for enjoyment) probabaly isn't worth it.

Might be fun until you have to mow all that acreage. Or tend to the livestock that is mowing it for you.
seriously? you haven't planned this out?
treeline about 100 yards from the house in all directions. 100 yards is a good distance...
some decorative shrubs or something similar at about 50 yards.
depending on how much yard you have, you could push the treeline out to 200 yards, with other markers at 100, 150yds etc.
also, tannerite garden gnomes...

I didn’t watch the video, but I know for a fact that one specific rifle offers me to the ability to hit a 12” target out to 1200 yards, this rifle and the ability to use it gives me options in a SHTF situation, that doesn’t necessarily mean smoking hordes of zombies looking for brains or UN troops coming to take my guns, but personally I feel much, much better knowing I could potentially take a game animal at extended ranges if the need should arise, I don’t normally hunt, but if I can hit a 12” target out at extended ranges, taking a 400-500 yard shot at a deer or a pig won’t give me a moments pause, again in a SHTF, I would never attempt to take game at those ranges unless I was in dire need, at that point my flexible morality would allow my need to eat to override any worry about any “ethical” kill concerns, I know that will bother some people, but if my family needs food, Bambi is getting lead at any range.

I am completely pulling this next statement straight out of my arse, but I personally believe that being able to shoot at extended ranges with a purpose built rifle does in fact improve my ability to shoot my carbines, I have always viewed my carbines to be effective from 0 to 200 yards, I now know for a fact that I am proficient with them on a man sized target out to 400 yards should they need arise, while not ideal nor even probable, for dozens of reasons, knowing I can makes me “feel” far more confident than “I should be able to”, but again, that’s just my opinion.

Hell I shoot my carry gun, a G19, out to 100 yards just to see if I can, no it isn’t practical, but the cops in LA back in 91 sure as hell would have benefited from a little long range pistol shooting, just sayin lol

We ( VODTac ) believe you, as a protector should OWN 300 yards. Nothing should move or live within that range unless you allow it to. 0 to 100 yards with the handgun, 0 to 300 yards with the rifle.
In order to do this, you need to be very good at 500 yards, for the skills and confidence, as OP noted. Whatever the edge of your normal envelope is, in most any factor of life, you should be practicing beyond that.
My 2 cents, YMMV

I like the way this sounds. A lot.

^^^ This. Purpose built rifle, and practicing or competing in shots that go out to 1200 yards; you quickly realize that suddenly, you are very proficient at 500 yards.

Yes sir, my long range setup definitely allows me to make “headshots” on steel silhouettes out to 500 rather easily, TRC near Fayetteville has AR 500 silhouettes and 8” or 10” poppers (I’m not exactly sure what size they are, but they are slightly larger than the “head” on a full size silhouette) and I’ve gotten very good at banging on those, the 600 yard popper is where my shooting ability starts to remind me that I ain’t all that lol, so body shots are way more prevalent out there with the Grendel.

I recently, with some help, landed a 77gr pill on a 6” plate at 500 yards with my new Tikka.

It isn’t up to par with some of you gentlemen, but it felt like a tiny superpower that I unlocked.

Nonetheless, I see virtually no realistic scenario where I would grab the Tikka over just about any AR for protecting myself.
