AJC reports Atlanta PD issued guns to non LEO

Why would you risk your good embezzlement scheme over buying a high profile item like a handgun? They made the guy pay back the $85k in other bogus crap he bought, but he probably would have gotten away with it had he not done something gun related that got other random letter agencies involved.

When you're a CFO and you get caught stealing, are you really qualified to be a CFO? A good CFO knows how to cook the books, sheesh.

He along with others breached their fiduciary responsibility to the city and taxpayers.

Meh, he was issued guns, he left the job and returned the guns, I think the taxpayers are fine. Was it done to circumvent the background check, maybe, but hopefully the background check related to his employment would have caught anything big, so Insee no motive. Machine guns are a different story, seems like there might have been some shenanigans.

He embezzled funds by purchasing stuff that was not for the department but his own use.
If we did that with a company or county pcard we would be cuffed and charged accordingly.
Problem with these crimes is nobody notices until you want to stop doing it, makes it harder to cover it up.

Yeah, I glossed over the embezzlement that was unrelated to the firearms. I used to audit the expenses of corporate executives specifically looking for this kind of stuff. Found it all the time, but it was 99% just dumb stuff that the executive paid back, there was rarely intentional misconduct. It’s easy not to record your mileage correctly, or to buy a dinner on the company credit carc but not write down why it was a business expense. Don’t know if this guys was doing things intentionally or not, but since he’s spending taxpayer money he should be help accountable.

I agree as long as you pay for any personal charges that is all good.

Forget the PD shenanigans...the real crime in that article is absolutely horrific editing. The article ends with the tagline "Support real journalism...", they need to support a real English language aware editor.

Trouble is the personal accountability or lack thereof. When you're high up in an organization and you can use a corporate card you stop caring very much if it's intentional (or quasi- intentional) or not. I'll just do this and if accounting catches it and says no, I'll just pay it. If they don't catch it, well... I'm not going to own up to it without them asking. Better to beg forgiveness than to ask for permission. You try to get away with what you can get away with. After all, they're paying you big bucks for who you are. Not because you're a boy scout..
Lived that life for a while.
When I did a stint with City/County government, they were very strict on expenditures and funds allocation. It got the guy that hired me fired due to a mistake on his part. But, I still managed to get umm... things to my benefit under the table. It just goes with the territory.
