Anyone upping their prepping ??

I have wanted to get one of those as well. They are pricey but probably save a lot compared to buying the premade stuff. Is there a preferred brand/model? Good site with recipes and/or how-to's?

The YouTubers swear by the Harvest Right brand. They're about $2.7k for their medium size unit.

As far as recipes go...whatever food you want, make it, then stick it in the freeze drier. At least thats what it appears.

Really good review.

Harvest-right, hands down. Seriously consider the oil free pump, though, there is at least one thread on here discussing them and a different opinion or two n that aspect. Watch for an end if the year sale if it’s not quite in the budget. We got $500 off that way.

If you want it get it now. Things are only going to become more scarce and expensive.

Just picture ammo last year. Now imagine that situation expanding to foods... canned goods etc.

Inflation driven by monetary policy is beginning to kick in. Throw in supply disruption and rising prices due to fuel costs and driver shortages. Before long it will be like looking for TP at the beginning of the kung-flu.

Adding a little bit every week. This is one ragged edge we are on.

Halloween night, last night. Power blinked off. Area wide, over 2000 people suddenly no power near intersection of NC Hwy 42 and I-40 just Southeast of Raleigh/Garner.

What if.............

Fortunately, we had plenty of candles, and were able to bring up several flashlights. Cellphones still worked and was able to bring up the Duke Power outage map.

But, the power did come back on about 40 minutes later. Crisis averted.

One can never be prepared enough, or be able to wrap one's head around, 'This may be it.' It is a genuine, sickly, sinking feeling. 🥺

Wonder what happened? Ours blipped momentarily, enough so that you could see it in the lights, but not long enough to interrupt anything.

Seeds are an excellent thought. I am ignorant. Can I just go grab some at Lowes’s Tractor Supply or whatever and stash them in a cool dry space?
Buy heirloom seeds so you can use the seeds from the plants you grow to plant new crops, and so on. Typical commercial seeds are good for one crop but those plants will not reproduce.

Who would be interested in a joint purchase of a freeze drying machine that we rotate on a scheduled basis? It's not something that you use everyday anyway and you would know when it's coming and how long you would have it so you will be well prepared to make maximum use of it. When you feel you've had enough you could sell your share to someone else.

There will be plenty of long pork on the menu the day the checks stop.

I did stock up on hot sauce and vinegar though. Its uncivilized to eat pork without them.
1. It will take a few days to a week to get there

2. Eeeewwww...

While on the subject of storing seeds, once they are sealed up well -keep them in freezer. I had some in freezer for 8 years that I planted this year and produced just fine.

agree with LTC Don:

'This may be it.' It is a genuine, sickly, sinking feeling."

that is what we, at our house, consider a training moment.
if the power "blinks"....what is the first thing to do?
you might have different answers. we have ours.

the point is: have a plan.
if this/then that.

Is there a tried and true brand/model vaccum sealer that is recommended?
how much do you want to spend for one? FoodSaver is pretty good for their cost. You can get LEM at Academy of Bass Pro. But they and their accessories are pricey.

You really can't go wrong with FoodSaver. I have had the Titanium for a long time and dread when it dies. The higher end FoodSavers are reviewing good. Make sure you get one that you can use the large bags.

Put up 24 pints of chicken breast today. Between the cost of canning jars and fresh chicken . It was cheaper to put up my own . Beans, bullets , and band-aids !!!

Over the past couple weeks I’ve put 200# of rice away in 1 gallon Mylar bags. I’m still trying to figure out the most economical way to store the bags. I’m using totes from Home Depot now. 60# is about all the totes can hold weight wise but there’s a little wasted space on each tote.

Metal trash cans. Need to keep the meeces out of your stuff.

I have a Food Saver . I put my rice, beans in proportions in canning jars then pull a seal vaccum with the Food Save.

thank you REELDOC for the reminder.
metal trash cans which effectively seal
tightly with lids have lots of possibilites.

Burpee has a 50% sale....take advantage. All preps will run out eventually especially if you were raised Southern. When did you leave a hillbillies house without a ham biscuit?

This is a great time to reference Corrine Netzer"s book on calorie counts. You do have this?
Gather seed stuffs with a higher calorie counts. More is better with the calories during famine. Dont forget the hog seeds!

25 more pounds of beef bought again tonight and 20 cans of assorted veggies. i need to get some rice and beans stored. Asparagus was double from the previous year but I don’t shop much for food. Ammo, food, and cash.

That's a ongoing process around here. I need to build a trashcan faraday cage to put my radio in also. I picked up an essential oil distiller so I can clean small batches of water if needed. We are bagging up dry foods this weekend to bolster the deep larder(15+ years). Like I said it's a process. As Waylon sang...."A country boy will survive"

Rooster
When did Waylon sing that.
