Anyone upping their prepping ??

Bought a chest freezer yesterday. Filled it with the veggies we froze from the garden. Got 80lbs of chicken yesterday between Lil D and I. Next is a few hundred more cans of food and some dry goods, beans, rice, grits, etc.

Food is not the only thing that concerns me …
- Personal toiletries … soap, shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant (P&G products and they’re warNing on price increases and questionable supply), aspirin, peroxide and isopropyl alcohol and other 1st aid supplies
- Household items … laundry supplies, cleaning supplies, paper products, furnace filters, garbage bags,
- Kitchen misc ... aluminum foil, Saran wrap, parchment paper and ZipLoc bags to start

Ive even thought about a couple extra pair of sneakers and hiking boots along with other clothing “standards” that likely will go up in price and possibly be harder to find if/when foreign supply chains get worse since most of it ain’t made in the USA anymore.

Having money sitting in a savings account earning 0.25% yearly while inflation is running over 5% monthly means you’re current stacking helps keep your money from being FJB’ed.

Not letting the freezer get empty this year as i normally would to defrost it, too important to keep it stocked

1000 gal propane tank topped off, genset GTG, 3 cords of split oak & hickory to feed the furnace/boiler. Side of beef in the freezer & about 6 months worth of canned & dried vittles, along with toiletries & paper goods. Ammo & components stacked pretty deep.

Not near as prepared as I'd like, but it's a good start.

Oops … add 1 year’s supply of each to the list … single malt, bourbon, vodka and tequila. While that will put a huge dent in the cookie jar but it wont go bad much less a waste.

That's a ongoing process around here. I need to build a trashcan faraday cage to put my radio in also. I picked up an essential oil distiller so I can clean small batches of water if needed. We are bagging up dry foods this weekend to bolster the deep larder(15+ years). Like I said it's a process. As Waylon sang...."A country boy will survive"

costco bulk bottles from other states are a great deal. if you have somebody who travels a lot, have them bring you a few 1.75L bottles. You may not have high quality, but you'll have quantity.
i can mix jack into anything, and costco's vodka is better than most cheap stuff. and having 4L of each on hand gives me the warm fuzzy.

Increased non-perishable stock over the last few months. Probably up it again JIC. Plenty of ammo and components. Got a 1/4 acre pond and a 21’ above ground pool for emergency water supply, and can run well pump off the generator.

I should probably up the stash of Jim Beam, Jose’, and Fireball, though. A couple cases of airplane bottles would be a good thing!! Barter goods, too, but hopefully we won’t need to do that….

I think I’m gonna start putting away seeds, too…[emoji848]

I'm afraid of what a year's supply of likker would look like in this house.

If it’s like my house, it would be un-possible.

Increased supply always meant increased demand.

Got a free generator for fixing another generator. Full steer on order for Jan 5th butcher at early Feb 2021 meat prices. It will be Split between 3 sibling family members. Grinder just showed up for processing deer.

Wife has been buy a little extra for the last 2 years and has it stuffed in every available nook and cranny around the house. Chickens are laying eggs.

TP stashed everywhere. Camping supplies are in check.

yes.
we definitely have.

wife really got on board after the toilet paper shortage started.
she did not question buying another generator, more canned food, etc.
recently, her favorite (and Warren Buffett's too) soft drink, Cherry Coke has been in short supply.
today, we went to Food Lion and Harris Teeter to buy all we could find....which was 4 2-liters and 2 12-packs.

if coffee ever got gone, the streets would not be safe.

We try and buy extras each time. Have good stock pile of paper products and toiletries.
I really need to clean the freezer out and eat all the ready made meals and stock more meats and fish.

We've been stocking up on pretty much everything. Flour, sugar, salt, meats, a little gasoline for the generator, chicken feed, etc.

Also, the price of fertilizer has doubled since April, and supposedly will continue to rise. I'm half considering buying all of next year's fertilizer (800 pounds or so) now.

We've increased ours pretty steadily.

I don't want to bore anyone with all the details, but I'm a big fan of Augason Farm #10 cans. They are always going on sale on Amazon. I used to use other methods, and a lot of money/food went to waste over the years. Now I buy the 10+ year shelf life stuff so I don't have to constantly fool with rotating stock.

My wife is pretty awesome about it all. It's just her family I fear showing up the day after the balloon goes up. 😬

i keep thinking if the ballon goes up, we’re going to need to take in people, if fir no other reason than you've got to sleep sometime.

WoW
Everyone is getting prepared

I have about 15 bags of dumplings (each bag 50 pc) of my favorite Chinese dumplings in my deep freezer

A Whole beef tenderloin that was on sale and some ground beef

1 bag of 50lb rice and another 5Gal Bucket of rice

Some flours and pasta...

Looking to get half a Steer but I don't know what's a fair price or something

Also thinking about getting a Whole goat or Lamb meat (since it's smaller)

We got a 10 cubic ft best freezer a few weeks ago. Spent a lot of time vacuum sealing a bunch of beef, pork, and chicken this weekend.
Bought 2 large Thrive Life can racks several years ago and filled them with canned goods that we normally use, and a bunch of Thrive freeze dried meats in #10 cans. Have pretty much depleted the every day stuff, just didn't practice the refill as we should have. Those racks will get moved to the barn once it's built, and will likely only have the Thrive stuff stored there.
We plan to build a root cellar asap, as soon as I can figure out the best design, and the best location. It'll be a big one if I have my way.
We just joined Costco, since there's one close to our SC place. We're trying things like protein bars to see what we like before we stock up. The have an awesome deal on Blue Diamond Smoked Almonds....45oz bag for just under $9.
We want to get into canning, but have never done it. Never had a big garden, but now we have the room, and in SC you can just about squeeze 2 plantings per year.

I’m running out of storage so I can’t do but so much until I build a house and a shop.

Checking my tree rat and poke weed stock. I ain't worried about preparing for getting nuked to death or anything crazy.

Im currently residing in a 5th wheel prepper mobile. It has everything i need. But yes I plan on raising meat chickens for enough protein to feed everyone I need to for a year

Bought TP, toothpaste, and isopropyl alcohol today. The shortage of the week appears to be Kleenex, which were down to 5 packages at BJs and none at Target.

Seeds are an excellent thought. I am ignorant. Can I just go grab some at Lowes’s Tractor Supply or whatever and stash them in a cool dry space?

I have thought about that with our mountain place. Not a fortress by any means, but we have lots of wood and water. Could do a garden in one area. Lots of elevation and nice rock formations. But I cannot be everywhere at once. 😒

I just save seeds from my garden harvest and usually only buy heirloom varieties that can be replanted (except for corn...but trying some heirloom varieties of corn also). I store them in a tupperware container until the following year after drying them out on paper plates.

This also allows saving seeds from the BEST of the harvest so eventually I end up with desirable genetic traits...same as animal breeding.

I do tend to think locally. as far as an EMP type event goes, locally we have enough farms to feed our local populace, long term. We have enough stores to survive the short term transition. If we wind up with the people I think we will (hope to) have, post SHTF, we will be well situated to forming a community clinic.

Then again, SHTF can be a slow moving advent.

Just bought my 175th can of Mini Ravioli. If for some reason I can't find paper silhouettes in the future, I'll shoot everyone of them.

One of the upsides of the china virus hysteria was showing my wife how important it was to prepare.

I'm starting to think of various items outside of normal prepping that would be helpful. Sump pumps, bicycles, etc.

Pretty much. Might be a good idea to pick up “Vegetable Gardening for Dummies”.

I need a copy of it as well. My thumb is about as green as a brick…..

We’ve done some half assed deck gardening, but nothing serious. Just a salsa garden since we eat more fajita’s, nacho’s and taco’s than the any Mexican.

I have a couple cases of dehydrated food. 25 year life, good for four people for three days each. Would rather have some MREs so I can eat them without water or dishes.

Stocked up on Vietnam surplus USGI gear for situations

My buddy has a freeze dryer so we are basically making our own Mountain House without as much sodium. Not a cheap toy but worth it for multi family food preservation. In a vac sealed canning jar, freeze dried meat lasts a lot longer than 10 years

We're itching to get one. A few of the homesteading YouTube channels we watch have them, and the wife and I both want to get it. Not in the budget yet, but it's coming at some point.

I have wanted to get one of those as well. They are pricey but probably save a lot compared to buying the premade stuff. Is there a preferred brand/model? Good site with recipes and/or how-to's?
