April/May 2023 22Lr Rimfire 50 yd Challenge

amps, I do not know if you remember me from before, but I shoot just to see how I can do, I do not submit my scores to win the event. However with the targets being submitted with the new shooters, I may have to up my game. We are getting some really impressive scores.
I do remember you and glad to see you shoot again with us. Shooting with better shooters makes you better. I have learned so much and have gotten advice on everything from ammo to actually buying a new to me rifle a few weeks back.
I am not trying to win (I don’t have the skills you all do) but just to start getting scores closer to you all is extremely satisfying. I hope others feel the same as I do. I wish more would join us but I know it takes a big man to post a score of a 100 while some are scoring 250. I have been there but I also don’t try to take myself so seriously.

Still lots of time left, but understand your frustration with the weather. Could be worse, I lost my windshield on the way back from the range this week. Truck dumping rock on the road. Had to pay the deductible to get it replaced.

As a newcomer, I gave it a shot Thursday night. New rifle, new scope, had just zeroed it, and first shot missed the biggest target. I’ll post it up tomorrow so we can all laugh at my misery.
I know full well about that misery. If you don’t believe me look back on some of our old months. Some targets I was lucky just to hit paper.

Great to have you join in the fun. Once you dial it in and find ammo it likes, then you will see better results. We like to hear about the struggles, as well as successes. I put a new scope on my RPR rimfire and had trouble getting it on paper. Finally used a laser bore site to save on ammo. Hope to have it out this week.

As promised...a poor 175 if I'm calculating correctly. What's funny is that my 3 previous shots on the sighting-in target made holes through each other! Must be the shooter.

The 3 sight in shots may have been due to a cold barrel.
All shots tend to go left. Are you sure there's no scope shadow when you're shooting?
Either way, nice having you play along with us. I'll try to post one that will look about the same as yours maybe later this week.

Yes. I'm having some serious problems with sight picture and shadow. I've played around with it some, but I was really struggling that day. I'm having a hard time getting it dialed in.

Try mounting the scope further rearward so you don't have to crane you neck forward to find the sweet spot.
I've got a riser on my stock. There's a spot where the riser contacts my face and I can replicate that same hold every time I shoulder the rifle, be it on a bench or prone, my face lands in that spot. From there I mounted my scope so I don't see any shadow.

Hey NorthDurham,
new everything takes awhile to get everything sorted.

All but two shots are on the same elevation. Those two are close to it.
For windage, every shot went left of center but one and it was dead center.
Your parallax setting probably isn't a problem. Parallax usually affects both Windage and Elevation equally.

That target doesn't show an elevation problem.

Measuring each shot's position relative to it's own clay and then marking them all on one clay would give you a group that was 1.4" wide and .6" tall.

There are really only 3 flyers in that contrived group and they show up on your target too.

If you had started that card with some Right on, it looks like your score would have been around 210-220

Thanks for the tips. I need to play more with scope positioning for sure. No matter what I try for adjustments, I just can't keep to get the right height on the riser and position (front to rear) on the scope. Seems I'm constantly adjusting my head...much more than I should. I'll play with it some more.

Try starting from standing position. Pick out a target,
Settle into your offhand ready position with eyes closed. Bring the rifle up.
Open your eyes. Figure out needed adjustments. Do 'em.
repeat

I always try to test my scope setup on top of my rifle before I ever buy rings. Helps if you have several sets of rings, but most dont. I use sheets of paper, as I don’t trust stacks of pennies. Then I make measurements to buy the rings that fit my shooting.
I find the height I like for my approach. Don’t worry about what others think you should do when it comes to height. Get the height you like, and you can adjust with the rail, rings, or scope. I also take this time to find the positioning that fits front to back as well, so I know where my rings will need to go, so I know if I need cantilever rings or not.
I would suggest doing this, instead of just picking a set of rings that people say is the height you should use.

Another good tip. I think I’m using low rings because I was always told to get as close to the barrel as possible without touching. I’d think with my adjustable riser I’d find something that works but it’s not coming easy. Appreciate the advice. It’s a journey.

Well, it seems I made a mistake. I actually shot two targets that day. I thought I had uploaded the better of the two. I did not! I still missed the easiest "5", but the rest scored. Not that it matters, but this makes me seem a bit more competent!

Nothing wrong with that target.

Very near perfect and you hit some 0's. Next time out should be better. Good Luck!

Hey guys, I won't be shooting for probably another month or so. I had a heart attack on Thursday last week. I had two stents put in and am doing well. A skinny 66 year old with no risk factors other than LDL cholesterol was a little high. Passed a stress test and several other test the week before the heart attack. So you never know what the future holds for you I guess. I am doing well ,other than on several medications now , and trying to get adjusted to those. I'll be to shooting with you guys again before to long. Take care. Mike

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but glad to hear you're bouncing right back. We'll be here when you're ready.

I hope you recover quickly Mike and are able to get back to normal. We look forward to seeing your targets posted.

Wow, that is scary. Glad you seem to be on the mend. Let me know if you need anything. Looking forward to you being back on here and kicking my butt as always.

I ran out to the range this morning and managed to shoot one of these. I clearly didn't win anything. Last month I thought the Eley semi auto was a good fit for my rifle, this month it seems like it's no better than the Norma Tac 22 stuff. I may shoot another target if I get a chance and I'll use the CZ.

I have never tried Eley semi auto in my CZ but it had done pretty good with, club, Target and match. Might try one of those and see if your rifle likes them better.

Yep. I've got Eley tenex and Match sitting here since Christmas. My wife is a pretty good Santa Claus

I was able dial in my RPR with some SK, but I think it may like Eley. Also dialed in my CZ with the Manners stock, after swapping scopes. It shot 10 rounds at .44 from 50 yards. SK long range is still preferred, until that lot runs out. Now I can shoot some clay targets next time out. I have a few boxes of Eley Outlaw Semi Auto that I hope to run in my Ruger 10/22. Hard to find that right now. It is 42 Gr, so it should cycle pretty well.

OK, got a nice calm day.

My favorite (we got the same nickname) silhouette rifle got an infrequent bench session.

I bet 99% of the shots it's fired over the years were from standing. It's funny that from the bags it's trigger feels like 5lbs, but from standing it's like 2ozs.

Fine job! What is the rifle and scope set up. Ammo? Whatever it is you can shoot it well.

It's a special Kimber I bought new back in the late 80s at Trivet's Guns, Mufflers and Upholstery. No kidding.

And also not kidding, there were supposedly only 35 of the little Mini-Classics made. And even more fun, the city of origin, stamped on the barrel says it was made in Colton, Oregon. There really aren't too many Kimbers with that city on them. And to shovel it on even deeper.... The finish is said to be Warne Red. I've never seen another Kimber that beautiful color.

It's been a shooter since day one.

I bought it right after multi-bypass surgery. I saw it stacked right beside a close twin in the "special rack" at Trivet's and almost had a 2nd heart attack. I might have busted a suture or two for sure. The twin's wood was sorta light brown and a guy was buying that one at the time.

In the picture above it's wearing the Leupold 3-9X it wore for almost a decade of NRA smallbore silhouette. Almost all the years shooting sb silhouette I shot CCI SV. When I shot the clay's target, it was wearing a Leupold straight 12X varmint since I usually go for at least 12X when benchresting at 50yds or more. I don't remember which ammo I shot at the clays, but that day I was comparing Eley Team to one of the SK's, probably SK Standard+.

thanks for the compliment

Great shooting! Looks like that just secured you at the top. Hmmm, might we need to come up with a new tiebreaker?
well you won’t have to worry about that from me.

shot this one today in the rain with different ammo and sk in the red box did the best so here’s that target.

Forgot to take a picture but here’s a pic of the gun from a different day.

Cz457
Rugged oculus
Sk red box
Bipod

Also, I haven’t shot at 50 yards since it was very cold and my zero was about 2 inches low when I started today.

What can I say except excellent shooting and really nice collectable Kimber. It's going to be hard to beat your target ( not impossible) just hard. We might not need a different tie breaker.
I got back from my Low Country Turkey Hunt and the final score was ZERO. I did take a quick range trip today to test some ammo but I didn't shoot the Clays.

With a little less then a month to go heres the current standings of all that have posted perfect scores and then the tie breakers.
#1 @Litl_Red 260 x10
#2 @oldemanhub 260 x 9
#3 @Eric F 260 x 8
#4 @Got2hav1 & @Pbj ak @1gohunt 260 x 7
#5 @Amps 13 260 x 6

Really impressive shooting gentleman. The shooters who did not get on this list are so close too.
A few months ago I couldn’t even get close to these guys but a little work and a change up of equipment along with listening to the pros tips and I am not as much of an embarrassment.
Let’s hope this wind dies down and we can get back out…

Hey @Amps 13

It was raining when I shot and the paper wet. I don’t think I had but 2 bonus hits.

Not trying to knock you out of the line up but I think I posted a 260 with 7 O's.
