Brett Kavanaugh Senate Kabuki Theater

The past two years has me rethinking a lot of things, legally. Unfortunately the woman's movement has been pushed back quite a bit as I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks like this...

I was in a position to hire employees. If I'm ever there again you bet I would give a second (3rd, 4th) thought about hiring a woman. Any accusation...

As a successful man, married or otherwise, I will never be alone with a woman who isn't my wife or girlfriend. Any accusation...

Even your wife or girlfriend upon splitting up are also human and could become petty. Just think about what any accusation of abuse could do. Any accusation...

Another big question is what does Trump do? He nominated this guy, and they both had to know how the Dems roll. Trump really needs to fight for his guy, or why would anyone trust him going forward?

Declassify all the FBI and justice Dept docs TODAY.

Write an EO that starts te process of the military building the wall.

Order the FBI to investigate all these femal accusers, and prosecute for anything you can regarding flase staements and bringing fales charges.

This is unlike you. I expect to see you back in the A's again next week. See me after class.

Indeed he does, and I think he's a bit pissed off and ready to address these accusations head on. I like that he didn't mince words. He clearly stated that these are blatant smears and part of an attempted character assassination. I also like how he pretty much called out Feinstein for leaking this to the media AFTER all his public and private testimony.

I think that they’ll chicken out, which is stupid because it’ll just encourage more of this kind of silliness. We’re seriously considering unsubstantiated claims about alleged actions of an 18 year old as an indication of his ability to be seated, insanity. Heck, if she claimed rape after 30 years I’d still tell her that if it was real she should have acted on it at the appropriate time, not 30 years later.

What has everyone in this country been smokin'?

We still have a judicial system, even if it's been misused, that states a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

No amount of bad press can change that.

Kavanaugh's stance should be 'take me to court or go home.'

Get on with the vote. Seating him may just cause a heart attack and open up another seat!

Not only unsubstantiated, but refuted by other people that were there.

McConnel needs to be repalced by someone that can step up to the microphone and call out the insanity of all this.

What have YOU been smoking? There are a different set of laws and standards for members of the Democrat Party, Federal Government and their chosen favored groups. Like Hollywood, the media and the music industry. Kavanaugh and the R's are not granted that favored status.

I aint smokin' nothin'!

We all want to see conserves show some gumption. This how to do it within the law and very publicly. If he's innocent, and I think he is, what's he got to lose? If he drops out or gets pulled his rep is toast. Fight now or turn and run like he's guilty and it will follow him the rest of his life.

They can’t drop him and then not authorize an unlimited and endless investigation.

The title of a HuffPo article from Monday:
Mitch McConnell Promises A Vote On Kavanaugh In ‘Near Future,’ No Matter What Comes Out
The Senate majority leader called the sexual assault allegations against the Supreme Court nominee a “smear campaign.”

That was surprising and unlike him. I wonder if he knows something we don't? Then again, maybe Trump's spine is wearing off on the others. First Graham, now McConnell.

He may just be planning to use it for fundraising and campaigning if it fails. When dealing with politicians and what they say, never attribute to courage that which is more likely to be caused by deceit and politics.

Yeah, but even deceit and politics doesn't usually make them this mouthy. Lie? Sure. But they are getting down right feisty. lol

The Republicans feel the heat thwtbthry MAY lose the Senate...they know If they don’t cofirm Kavannaugh or a conservative before the new senate then they WILL get a leftist leaning nominee from the next administration OR it will stsy vacant a long tome. That is simply unacceptable. Cofirm Kavannaugh and let the people vote in November as they wish. Voting for or against Judge Kavannaugh will not affect their re election. Well, it might help some of them get re elected. Rumor has it democrats are upset at Joe Manchin because he is voting up on the Judge.

It’s been a long time for this alleged incident but if he did do this he is not fit for the Supreme Court. I’d like to see her testify and this come to resolution. If there are witnesses they need to also be subpenoed. But they will not be. I don’t want any iffy character from a priveledged family sitting on the court for thirty years. We already have an iffy character at the highest office. Trump makes Bill Clinton look like an amateur when it comes to women relations.

I agree. We should totally judge a mans character by who he was when he was 17.

If you could please name some of the women who have accused Trump of assualt. A consenual relationship is not applicable. There are numerous women wanting to tell their story and have investgations into Clinton. These accusations are a farce and are making a mockery of our system. She either wants to tell her story or she doesn't. She either believes something happened and wants people to k ow about or she is paid hack. I for am ready for a vote. She had already had this committee bend over ackbackwa to accommodate her.

Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, slept with slaves. Shall we now say he was not fit to be a founding father?

We don't need perfect men for the job, because none exist. We need the right men for the job.

To me, the issue isn't whether he did it or not, its how he has denied it. Now that he has said he didn't do it, then he had better not have. If he had done it and made a statement like "I do not recall doing any of these things, but I will admit that when I was 17 I was a bit of a partier and things may have gotten out of hand. But I do not have any specific recollection of abusing anyone" then I would support him. But at this stage we are at a "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Monica Lewinski" stage.

17 or 57, own it and if true sit on the home owners association instead of the Supreme Court.
Really?? So, you have developed no character or wisdom since you were 17. You've learned nothing and act in the same imature fashion as you did then? So, you want someone who was squeaky clean then who has no life experiences to make decisions on people who have endured the realities of life. You must have lived a sheltered life.

What? It seems that Trump has had some mutually beneficial relationships with women that entered these relationships of their own free will. Not sure Clinton's escapades were quite the same. Trump certainly isn't the monogamous father figure in a Hallmark movie, but it doesn't seem he is a serial sex abuser either.

Yeah Thomas Jefferson was a rapist if thats fact.

This is the statement from Thom Tillis

Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the President’s nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh to be an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. I appreciate hearing from you.

On July 9, 2018, the President nominated Judge Kavanaugh to fill a vacancy on the United States Supreme Court. Subsequently, on September 4, 2018, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a four-day hearing to evaluate Judge Kavanaugh’s qualifications and ask questions about how he would carry out the duties assigned to the highest Court in the United States.

As you are aware, less than one week after Judge Kavanaugh’s hearing concluded The Intereceptreported that Senator Feinstein was in possession of a letter detailing allegations of sexual assault by Judge Kavanaugh. This letter, which was written earlier this summer by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford of Palo Alto, California, claimed that Judge Kavanaugh had engaged in inappropriate conduct with her while he was under the influence of alcohol.

After my Republican colleagues and I were made aware of this allegation, the Committee launched an investigation and immediately conducted a transcribed interview with Judge Kavanaugh under the threat of federal criminal penalty. In addition to Judge Kavanaugh’s interview, the Committee has received statements from the four witnesses named by Dr. Ford who were allegedly in attendance at the party. All four witnesses either claimed they were not at the party in question or had no recollection of Judge Kavanaugh’s attendance. All witnesses provided this information to the Committee under threat of federal criminal penalties.

Chairman Grassley and Judiciary Republicans extended an offer to Dr. Ford to testify before the Committee in any setting that she would feel most comfortable in. After further discussions with Dr. Ford and her legal team, an agreement was reached for Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh to testify publicly under oath before the Committee on September 27, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.

Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh’s testimony will ensure her allegation is thoroughly and fairly vetted, and both individuals have a chance to speak. I take all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously, and the Committee must engage in a fact-based process that is fair and respectful to both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh. I look forward to hearing from both individuals on Thursday and believe this is a needed opportunity to fully examine these allegations.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. If you have any questions as the Judiciary Committee continues its investigation of Dr. Ford’s allegations, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Thom Tillis
U.S. Senator

If Kavanaugh did what? The media has tossed about a lot of terms, from "inappropriate touching" to "sexual assault" to describe Ford's encounter. I will certainly listen with great interest to Ford's testimony.

I remember something fondly referred to as necking or making out that boys and girls did when I was a teen. If that is what Ford describes, I will not be impressed. To date, Ford has not claimed use of force and that is what Ford would have to say to grab my attention. Moreover, Ford would have to claim both force and some evidence of force, such as torn clothing.

In short, I'm not interested in hearing that Ford was playing touchy-feely decades ago and subsequently decided that it was inappropriate because it did not then conform to what is now the most current feminist standards of male-female interactions.
If there are witnesses they need to also be subpenoed. But they will not be.
The people Ford named as being at the party have already given sworn statements. There is absolutely no reason -except to add to the circus atmosphere- to subpoena anyone to swear a second time that they know nothing to testify about.

Do you hold people to their character based on how they acted at 17? Nobody does that in real life. And to expect it from anyone else is beyond absurd. Even if he did it, unless you can show me someone he did it to as an adult I just don’t care. Nobody lives their life like this. Not even progressive liberals. Even if he raped her, was tried, and served his time he would have more legal protection than he has from this allegation. We, as a society, do not hold minors to the same standards as we hold adults.

Forget the hearing. You have a daughter right. We’ll see how you feel when some guy starts unacceptingly touch’s her privates one day. Think you will like that guy later when he is more than 17? Bet you just love him to death.

*edit - I was going to make a point that I'm pretty sure will fan flames. You seem pretty resolute. Perhaps there is some backstory. I'm not interested in poking strangers with sharp sticks. At least not a 6AM.

You’ll call him Son (in law).

Seriously, the whole she said it so it just be true has gone too far. Every other shred of information (no evidence either way) says it’s BS.

I am equally concerned for my son, who may build a life of accomplishments. Attain greatness. And be on the verge of something grand only to see it crushed by a political stunt based on a 40 year old “she said”.

But no, let’s just believe all women, regardless of evidence. Because treating a population of people based solely on gender isn’t sexist at all.

There are several dates that are burned into my brain, I can guarantee that I won't/can't forget them, who they pertained to, or who I was with with they occurred.
My wedding date, the birth of my son, the day my best friend was killed on a motorcycle, the day I was diagnosed with cancer, the day I was told I was cancer free, the day we capsized a boat in the ocean and nearly drown. If the events of that night happened the way she has described them and it traumatized her the way she has described, I find it highly suspect she can't remember where the party was, why she was there, who she went with, or hell even what year it was. I do think she deserves to be heard but convincing me that happened is going to be a uphill but not impossible task.

I'm glad everyone doesn't share your stance on forgiveness. Otherwise, we'd all be in some serious trouble.

To me, it isn't just about forgiveness. It is about due process and ones ability to defend themselves. I have a zero tolerance for rape, assault, or pedophilia. Absolute harshest punishment possible. The problem is, part of our country and society dictates that before the state can punish someone they have to be able to prove their case. If you accuse someone of doing something over three decades ago then you need to have some form of evidence that can be defended against. I was in college a short 20 years ago, I do not remember every party I went to, every girl I danced with, ever individual I may have offended. Heck, I forget that I met some of yall in person from time to time. So if someone came forward and said "Back in 1999 at a party at Morrison Dorm you rubbed yourself against me and I felt assaulted." How exactly do I defend against that? I went to a lot of parties back then. The rooms were small and I am sure I probably bumped into a few people trying to get in and out of the place.

So it isn't that I completely believe that this Bret guy is somehow a saint who never said or did anything questionable in his life, it is the fact that he has been smeared, run through the dirt, and embarrassed in front of his friends, family, and country. All over the statements of a woman who may or may not remember the event completely.

This is why I believe the #metoo movement is going to backfire on itself. There is now a #himtoo movement. We need to empower women to speak up by taking the stigma and embarrassment away, while at the same time recognize that we cannot destroy peoples lives over the indefensible.
