Choose your melee weapon for the apocalypse....

Forgot I have this Blackjack Viking Raider Ax still in the safe. Bought while I was in Saudi Arabia during the First Gulf War. Carried it into Kuwait City during the liberation in Mar 91.

I got an old kukri somewhere ... I’d likely have to knock a layer of surface rust off but that thing can takedown small trees so “limbs” and such wouldn’t be any problem.

My primary go-to knife is a K Bar heavy Bowie. This is by far the knife I have most time and experience with having been on many camping/backpacking trips. Would likely be my go-to melee as well because I have very intuitive sense of its weight, balance, force needed to accomplish a particular task etc.

Next in line would either be my Buck Hoodlum (nice blade, but a bit too light for bone chopping tasks IME)

or my Chinese Broadsword (Dao), commonly used weapon among the Hung Ga (distance and power) subset/form of the Kung Fu martial arts. This weapon is heavy so would not be my first choice as a melee weapon unless melee weapon was serving as my primary.

A good full lunged cough and a misty spray enduging sneeze should do the trick...

IMG_20200413_150611.jpg For short machetes.....

I have a Kershaw Outcast that I picked up in a trade several years ago with @NCLivingBrit . It's a short blade. 14-16" I think. D2 tool steel and it's light, but it cuts bigger than it ought to for its size. It would most definitely be strapped to my pack if I were to hit the road for parts unknown.

I carry it quite a bit while hunting and it's a trail clearing beast and rarely requires attention to its edge.

Just pulled it off my hunting pack. I can't remember the last time I touched up the edge and it's still a razor blade.

You can make one of those pretty cheap, SOG makes a spearhead with a removable handle, you can carry it like a knife or attach a threaded pole and away you go:

I've got a couple of those. They are sharp, and they are neat. I question their durability over time. Haven't used mine a ton other than playing around in the back yard sticking things with it. Lightweight and handy at least.

Only issue i see with spiked hammers, hatchets, cleavers, etc.

Is getting them stuck. It would suck to finish an opponent then be unable to extricate your weapon before another adversary is upon you.

While i would say my Kershaw Camp 10 if i must resort to melee. I've had it get stuck breaking down a deer carcass. No bueno in a fight.

I guess I would have to go for something light that inflicts signicant blunt force trauma. No it won't cut off a limb or decapitate. But if a high arm strike goes through the arm and wedges into the shoulder blade. The weapon is out of the fight in that moment..

Something’s missing from this thread...

Oh yea, my neighbor

I like it!
It looks like you arc welded the spring eye closed?
Is the haft wedged and/or epoxied? Or just pinned?

I mig welded it closed before the quench. Differentially quenched so the edge is hard and the mass of the blade and socket are spring tempered. The haft is VERY tightly fitted. I ground the end of the haft down a bit but left it on the large side and hammered the head in place. Then it has a 1/4" brass pin peened in place. No wedge, no epoxy. I did it that way so that if I break the haft it will be more easily replaceable.

So far over a couple of evenings I've beat the hell out of it cutting trees and stumps. It hasn't come apart and is holding a wicked edge.

It's pretty heavy but not as heavy as you would expect. I forged and ground a decent Fuller the length of the blade to lighten it up a bit.

I gotta say for a melee weapon the home made mace made from the tractor gear that @charliesgrave posted is the one that appeals to me the most. Simple and effective with little chance of it getting stuck in someone.

Man, I want to go smash someone just seeing it.

Funny thing ... Ol’ Lester was a DEMOCRAT! Wonder how many minorities will remember how a Democratic Goobernor carried on like he did?
Hell look at black face northam. I found mine in a antique/junk shop and think I paid $5.00 for it. I didn't know what I had until I got home and did some research.

Oh where to even begin......

That’s what I’m talking about.
And yes, I’ll be running away from his house when the shiite goes down.
