Colt Halts Production of Long Guns for the Retail Market

So...walked into the Southpost PX on Bragg yesterday, back to the firearms counter, and what is sitting right there on the rack but a 6920...part of the "clear the vault" sale...$970 out the door (no tax at PX)....I took it home, a no brainer after glancing at the crazy prices they are fetching on gunbroker.

Again, proves majority of joes are not "gun guys" or that would have been long gone.

I doubled my money on a bone stock Colt A4 yesterday. I’m thinking about listing one of my Colt A4 Clones but I haven’t decided if I want to list it with the Acog and KAC M5. Might keep the parts and list another stock rifle.

6920’s new and lightly used are going within 1-2 days for $1100 on Arfcom.

I forgot about GB and the crazy prices people often pay on there. May have to brush off my username over there.

Sold my very unremarkable AR15A4 for 1K immediately after reposting it on armslist.

So, I don't really know my Colts (big surprise, right?), but if things are getting a wee bit looney and I decided to let one go, what would be a good "to the public" price on a LE6920MP-B? I think that's what this one is. Pic shows it with a standard stock, but it has the magpul stock on it as it sits in the safe.

I think I bought it from a coworker for $750.

The last two weekends, I have sold two of them for $950 plus tax and they went quickly. Mine were in the box, but I don't think that would matter right now. If you want to sell it, strike while the iron is hot. I don't see the hot market for them lasting that long, IMHO.

Bet you'd get $1000 without breaking a sweat.

Sadly I have this. I bought it just in case Hildabeast won the election. I just can’t bring myself to part with it. It has been taken out of the box to inspect it (had to make sure the carrier had the “C” stamped on it) and then for the photos. I figure I will hang on to it just in case.

Nothing wrong with hanging on to it. I still have a couple of mine that I am not selling.

Based on what I see on Arfcom, $1100 shipped. On GB $1200-1400.

Not that it makes it worth more or less, but the black label is unique and I had not seen others with it. I called my friend at Colt and he said it was odd that I got that directly from Colt. I asked why, he said 75-85% of black labels with only the word “Carbine” were run as contracts for LEO/Govt.. He also said it could have been a lazy employee that didn’t switch the label maker over..haha. I bet on the latter.

That is pretty cool.

I have a couple boxes that indicate (2013 config). What does that mean?

Edit: I looked it up while enjoying a very late breakfast. LoL....

I only own one Colt AR15. It is a 2003 6920 LEO that was my first AR15. Back then they were more expensive then they are now. I can't remember what I paid but I think it was somewhere close to $900 back then. In those days that was a pretty good deal. In todays $$$ that is about $1250. I don't think I would pay that for a stock 6920 today vs other guns but in 2003 there were fewer quality AR15s on the market. We are spoiled today. I shot it stock for a long time. Overtime I added a few things listed below. The gun has served me well. I still have everything that came with it. Box, manual, mags, carrying handle, stock, grip, cleaning kit etc.... Not that I am going to sell it or that I think it is a collectors item. I keep most stuff like that for some reason. I don't shoot it very often these days but I still like it. It might be the only AR15 I own that I am sentimental about.
  • Geissele Large Pin SSA trigger. (This was one of the only trigger upgrades made at the time for the Colt Large Pin guns.)
  • Magpul Stock and grip.
  • A.R.M.S.#40 Rear Sight
  • Surefire "Cheesegrater" Quadrail
  • BCM Mod 0 muzzle break
It amazes me how people will overpay once something it discontinued or off the market. They literally loses their minds. This one is particularly funny because Colt did not stop making AR15s. They simply stopped supplying the commercial market with them. The commercial AR15 market is horrible right now. Its a race to the bottom . The AR15 market is completely over sold and is flooded with $500 guns. Decent $500 guns like The S&W Sport II which is more than enough rifle for a lot of shooters dominate the market. You can step up just a little bit and get Aero AR15s in an M4 USGI type configuration for around $600. From there BCM and others can get you more bells and whistles for around $1000-$1200. From there the sky is the limit but the market for those rifles the market is really small compared to a sub $1000 Ar15.

Colt only has so many lines in order to produce long guns. They have LEO/Miltary/Foreign contracts which are profitable. The commercial Colt M4 configuration is not. They tried to move production to Canada and offer a stripped down Expanse version and people complained. People said they wanted the real thing but were not willing to pay for it. I am not saying Colt is worth more or less than other brands but they cost what they cost to make and they have to make a profit. So Colt made a perfectly smart business decision. They had a choice to use their long gun lines for profitable products or they continue to sell $20 for $10 in the commercial market. They chose profit and good for them.

If people were willing to pay $1200 for a Colt M4 6920 all day long Colt would start shipping them into the commercial market again but the reality is people won't. As soon as they push back in to the market and the FOMO dies people will complain that the Colt AR15 is too expense and the cycle will start all over again. It is really funny to watch people overpay for stuff that has been available at lower prices for years just because something has been discontinued. Look at what people pay for FN/Browning Hi Powers these days. It makes me laugh. I will also be the first to break out in laughter when and if they return to the market.

On the same day Colt made this announcement, the Defense Department announced that U.S. Army Contracting Command had awarded a $42 million foreign military sales contract to Colt to produce M4 and M4A1 carbines for more than a dozen countries, including Afghanistan, Djibouti, Jordan, Kuwait and Lebanon.

FN owns most of the U.S. military M4 & M4A1 market, having won the $77 million dollar contract away from Colt back in 2013.

'“On the other hand, our warfighters and law enforcement personnel continue to demand Colt rifles and we are fortunate enough to have been awarded significant military and law enforcement contracts,” wrote Veilleux. '

Yeah I see where the effort is going. Arming Hadji

Probably lots of AK's in these countries that are getting replaced by Colts. Turnabouts's fair play, they should send them all to us as parts kits.
