Who here has a dedicated beater (or not) gun that lives under the seat, in the glove box, suffed in between the seats etc? I'm looking for something for such a thing (I may use my XD Tactical .40). I'd like to hear what y'all have stashed, or not. I understand not wanting folks to know what you have and where.

No dedicated truck gun, but I grabbed a HK P30L and a HK 45c for the same reasons. Reliable plastic guns that are accurate and can take abuse. Don't really have a rifle for that role other than an AR. But an old lever action 357 or 44 mag would seem to be nice non scarey truck long guns. Or hell a 30-30 would work too. If there is ever a problem it was a deer or hog gun. Not an offensive long gun.

My Glock 23 has been riding in my cars for 15 years now. It's beat up, it's dirty but it shoots every time and I get along well with it, so it'll stay there

My Ranger is short on easily accessible hidey holes, so no truck gun, but if I am in the truck, there's gun in it.
That's the most important way to look at this whole topic

Well, if I'm in the truck then there would be two guns in it, maybe three.
If I'm in the truck there's usually a lot...with mags...with ammo...where I can get to them...a pistol is only good to get you to a rifle! Jus sayin...

If we are talking handgun and not long gun, something that shared a commonality with your carry gun(s) would be ideal.

I think a 12 gauge pump makes a good vehicle gun. Keep some buck and some slugs with it and you're good to go. Find a used one and you can get set up for less than $200.

I would if my truck was parked somewhere people could access it at night.

G 19 and extra mag in the gun safe of one. CZ P07 and extra mag in the gun safe of another. And a Sig P238 or CZ 75B on my person and a Bodyguard no laser on my wife.

Do you guys take them in every night?
Yes. It's also one of the reasons I want campus carry passed. The liklihood of my ever needing it while at work is negligible. The risk of it being stolen from my vehicle, while very low, is orders of magnitude higher.

Early on in my CC edumacation, I learned the phrase the safest place for your gun is in its holster on your body. I believe it to be true.

I've struggled with this concept a lot. If you have something in the car 24/7 stashed away, it can't really be a beater. You need something that's reliable and a good 'fighting pistol', and not finicky about dirt or lubrication since its going to see a lot of one and not a lot of the other. If you need it, you want something right. If someone steals it, you want one of the aforementioned high points.

So do you stash one of your oddball/unloved pistols there so if it gets damaged/stolen/rusted/whatever you're not out anything, and go with the "any gun is better than no gun" if you need it, or do you put a copy of your favorite/EDC-ish pistol in there so when you need it it's what you're proficient with?

One answer would be to EDC a high point! :)

The theft angle bothers me a lot. Yes you can lock them up, and bolt the box down, etc, etc. But bad guys get their guns by stealing them from good guys. I don't want to be the good guy that arms a criminal.

Couple of things. First, I will never assume responsibility for the illegal actions of someone else. Steal my gun--it is on you, not me. Use it in a crime, again on you, not me. I won't lose a nights sleep or miss a meal. And I would never live in a place where the government tried to put it on me (NY, CA???)

Second, I carry a truck gun, but for a different reason. My reason is to plan against something happening, whatever it might be, while I am away from home and me having to work my way back without the use of my truck. If I am 40 miles away at a buddy's house or 400 miles away for a different reason, and some sort of far fetched situation occurs and I have to be on the road for several days getting home (time depends on circumstances) I would want more than just my EDC. I'm not a hard core prepper, but that doesn't mean I don't want to be prepared. And, for a couple of hundred bucks, it is an easy decision.

I just can't bring myself to carry a Hi Point. I have standards, not very high ones, but they are standards!

The theft thing is one thing that lays heavy on the mind, but to play devil's advocate; stealers gonna steal. Hence why I wouldn't want something super expensive. And then there is the abuse/neglect/durability side of things (hence why I was leaning towards my XD or a lesser expensive wheel gun).

Get yourself a little bag that you can take in and out with you. I keep a pistol and a few BLS supplies in my bag and love it.

CA will take you down if it's a child (or a gang banger under 18), although I'm not close enough to the community there to know if that's really been used.

makes sense to me, I've had the same thoughts. When I have to drive to SC for work I'm always aware that I'm now 5-10 DAYS from the house, assuming I can move at a normal pace. Could I survive that trek in bad weather, or without food, or while injured? No idea. Would having to carry a larger weapon with me while doing it be a help or a hindrance? Can't say. On one hand it would be nice to have 30+1 on tap to convince people to leave me be. On the other, it's the "hey there's a guy with a rifle, let's shoot him from 200 yards away and take his shit" factor.

All that goes out the window though if your EDC is a G26 and your truck gun is just a G17 or something and not a rifle.

I am heading up to NY tomorrow. Probably driving through Maryland for a bit too. Sitting here debating what I should or could bring. Concealing a hadgun is a pretty risky proposition. Might take one in a locked case with it unloaded. But then what good is it? Was thinking a rifle just to have something useful. Would take a CZ bolt just to be as NY compliant as possible, but it is wearing a new scope that hasn't been zeroed. Dammit. 44 mag lever action. 10 rounds of 44 could be useful. Anyone have a brilliant thought?

I keep an old PA-63 in 9x18 in the center console just because it feels useful that way. Mainly so I have access to something while driving without finagling with my EDC. I also keep a single shot .22 and a half-empty brick of ammo in the trunk.

For me, a Ruger p89 is the perfect beater tool box gun, cheap, dependable, "hi-cap" and pretty corrosion resistant.
Not something I care to carry every day or any day but a pretty good shooter for the money.

Bought a LE trade in M&P for this purpose, then I found I like the stupid thing and dumped more than in cost into it.
That said trade in M&P40s and Glocks hang around $300, 9mms $30ish more, usually already have a beat up finish and dim night sights if you're into that.
The "typical" theft from a vehicle is rifling through an unlocked vehicle or as happened to me drop a window and grab everything of value in sight/reach, speed is generally a factor in public places, they want to be in and out, not cutting cables, busting "vaults" (not factory plastic popped with a screwdriver), searching hard under seats/dashes. Of course that may change if they know/believe you have something of value in there.

Don't you keep a Get Home Bag? Food, supplies, etc. A handfull of the 33rd magazines in that bag will go a long way in increasing your comfort level. Practice with the 17 out to 50yds and more. That's a combination I believe in. I'd like to add a 34 to the stable for this reason.

I always thought a Glock 19 and Keltec sub2k would make a good truck gun combo that would fit in a laptop bag for discrete transportation. I have nothing against 9mm and carry one everyday but there is just so much hatred and discontent in a Glock 20 loaded with underwood xtreme defenders and a 300blk loaded with hornady black 110gr v-max. If I'm reaching for my truck that means s*!+ just got real and people need to die.

Had one, lost it to a thief, never again.
Sonsabitches aren't happy just grabbing the gun and leaving. Once they find one they'll tear your vehicle apart looking for more.

yea, but not that many days worth.
So, on the long trips just throw in supplemental bag.

ETA - You can go days without food. Thow some PowerBars in there. Water, on the other hand...

A 3" Taurus model 66 has lived in the console of my vehicles since I bought it new in '95. Loaded with 158gr JSPs, with a speed strip full of the same, just in case.
