Did You Go Shooting Today

@KellySue and I went to PHA today. Took her new Colt Competition, my new to me Colt Officers, and a few others. Both 1911's ran steel cased, aluminum, and brass without a hiccup. Freakin both guns shot so nice and smooth, and even the officer's ran great with the full sized 8 round mags. Great day except I cant replace the 45 ammo I shot, lol.

I had 2 AR-15s (Carbine and pistol) that I installed adjustable gas blocks on with QD muzzle adapters. First time adjusting a gas block. Did everything correctly but ended up with some questions..
1. If the guns do not have a dedicated can (QD system) and you are adjusting the blocks, do you set them up to run without the can? If so, with the can they are over gassed and brass is flying out at a 1:00 position and 10 feet.
2. I was using 223 ammo that ran from 2900 to 3100 ft/sec. When I dialed back the block to run with the can and then took the can off, with the 2900 ft/sec the bolt did not lock back and with the 3100 ft/sec it did. Question is, should I load the 223 ammo on the hotter side. With the 2900 ft/sec is supersonic.

It is somewhat of a PIA adjusting the blocks while the handguard is on the gun. So if you are going to do this at the range, bring a towel to lay on the bench so you can keep up with all the screws from the handguard.

Took the wife shootin this morning as we enjoyed an extended holiday weekend. Private CRPC indoor range had a power outage cutting the time short, but the wife did get to try out her AR9 I built her. Sh'e pretty happy with it. Using the red dot and supporting it on the stall bench she just stacked a few magazines through a quarter sized hole. Her pistol skills have definately waned. She's started anticipating the shots and is pulling down. All her shots are 6 inches low. I grabbed her VP9 and put one right on the bull and handed it back to her..."no, it's not shooting low. You are." I'm glad she's digging the AR9 though. That'll get her out more often and we'll work on her pistol skills a bit more.

Went and shot my Dan Wesson PM7-10 and a Glock 40 MOS. I hate to say it, but the Glock is way more enjoyable to shoot and the DW didn't live up to my (admittedly high) expectations. The 1911, with it's light slide and strong recoil spring, had high slide velocity resulting in a very "snappy" experience. The Glock, on the other hand, has a oil tanker-sized slide and a noticeably slower slide velocity. Seriously, you distinctly tell when the Glock slide is coming back and going forward. The 1911, on the other hand, feels like a fire cracker. I don't regret the 1911, but I imagine the Glock will get way more range time.

The thing with seeing/feeling the slide thunk back and forth, I had that on my CZ Rami. Clunk, clunk.
Thought that was just me. It was weird. I don't need to see that thing coming at my face!

I see a sweet little gun there with a missing screw.
Has she decided what to carry?

I liked it! It's long enough for me to realize the load didn't kaBoom! in my face. 😂

Lol, that sweet little gun's new grip screws came in yesterday, so I'll get that squared away for you and have it to you Sunday. On as far as what @KellySue has decided, you'll have to ask her, I have no idea, lol.

Thanks for the screw, and I can't wait to ask her, I'm dying of curiosity.
See you tomorrow!

I did my New Years blasting today. Sighted in the new PCC, identified a magazine I had picked up on a trade as unreliable, tested a new batch of reloads, and didn't totally freeze my patooty off while doing all this.

It’s so weird seeing a gun with my name. I have an uncommon name as it is. I need to get one for that reason (rhymes with tsunami lol)

I loved mine, it was just picky on cleaning, and that weird clunkety-clunk slide thing. One speck too many of grime and it didn't like it. At least it was easy to take apart.
I like the Beretta I replaced it with much more, so I'm good. 🙂 Easiest gun ever to take apart.

Out in Gatlinburg TN. Stopped by Bud's Gun Shop & Range in Sevierville. Rented a Shadow 2 and FN509, 2 boxes 9mm, 30 mins of range time for me and the wife was north of $100. Ouch ($35 a box for 9mm 😲). Range is really nice and the guns were fun but geeze...

I shot a bit with the G48 to see how it did with some HP. It did fine, but I shot badly....worse than normal. lol. Maybe I'll do better tomorrow.

did some 22 pistol stuff last night just before dark. I did not have my brass net set up, so it was fun trying to hunt down those little cases in the grass...
also, I had a little used 6moa ADE red dot on one of them and i did NOT know to adjust brightness... started hurting my eye once it got to twilight and made it much harder to spot the target when the light flare seemed so much bigger.

still had fun though.

I shot handguns and had an interesting time. I had two fresh reloads fail to fire in a 45 Colt Blackhawk. They were done older cases but new Winchester WLP primers. The firing pin dent seemed rather small compared to the rounds that fired. Both rounds eventually fired on the second or third strike. I need to get to the bottom of that problem. I also had the adjustable portion of the factory adjustable rear sight on a 45 Auto Colt Competition 1911 come flying off. I suppose I had it screwed up a bit high. It was hitting where I wanted it to hit. I found all the parts except for one of the small springs.

The problem might be hard primers, not a bad gun.
Could be. I have never before had problems with WLP primers. I seated these primers on my Dillon and may not have gotten them seated completely. I had that same problem years ago with 45 Auto using WLP in Winchester cases with dirty primer pockets. I now clean all the primer pockets for 45 Auto and seat them with my old RCBS hand-held seater. These were cases that I salvaged from another reloader.

Some .40S&W therapy today, 100 rds in my Px4, S&W99, FN40L and HK USP at Triangle Shooting Academy. I always end up next to someone with a shotgun with slugs or two guys with AR's. Glad I use foam and HL sport ear pro.

Yes! Finally got out again after a bit of a hiatus. Went yesterday and the parking lot was full. No place to squeeze in an F150. That combined with the wave of new shooters, it just felt dangerous.

So I got there today when they opened the doors and it was winding up fast so I did what I went to do and got out.

Put a few more mags through the G17 and some .38 and .357 through the Taurus Model 66.

All good, especially the Taurus. I bought one with the canted barrel feature pre pandemic on serious sale, so I found the slight cant acceptable til I could get it straightened out. Then life intervened and I never went to where I bought it to see if they had a frame wrench and could deal with it, or send it back. I was thinking maybe a 686 insert would fit since it's basically a knockoff. I've heard some real doozies about Taurus customer service and said what the hell. I built a Bubba McGunsmith frame wrench based on plans (ok pics) from the S&W forum. It shot straight to begin with at mechanical zero and still does. Now I'm not bugged every time I look at it from the top.

I forgot to add the positive about a bunch of new shooters beside the obvious. Lots of attractive young ladies wearing yoga pants learning to shoot! We need more of that at ranges everywhere.

Well I loaded up the truck with guns, ammo and targets around 9:30 and it was 43 degrees with the wind blowing, Decided to wait until 10:30 and it was still 43. At 12 noon it still has not broken 48 degrees with the wind still blowing. Out in the open at the range, I usually find the wind blowing a little harder. Decided it was not worth it. After unloading the truck I saw a box of once fired 5.56 brass and said what the hell. Do not waste the day. Put half in the tumbler and when they are through I will deprime and resize them while the others are tumbling.

@KellySue and I took three "new to shooting" friends to PHA this morning. First rounds fired was at a crisp 42 degree's. Kelly bought me a very nice AR-500 10 inch steel target for my birthday, so last night I built a stand for it. Took it and my regular targets and stands with us. We shot 9mm, 45acp, 22, 223, and 7.62x39, pretty much all supplied by me, and all had a great time. Everyone did very good, as all listened very well to the safety debriefing we gave them when we first got there. It was very rewarding to see two adults, and a 16 yo kid taking to it and loving it. On another positive note, the new 45 reloads I loaded ran like a champ. Now time to really churn some out.

Mostly a fart around day. My main goal was to get some shooting done with my new to me K22. The first trip to the range with it was a little disappointing as extraction was extremely difficult and the double action pull was kerchunky after a few cylinders.

I polished the chambers with a mop and flitz and the extraction is acceptable now.

I traced the pull issue to the face of the cylinder rubbing the barrel as the gun got dirty. I installed a 0.002 endshake bearing and it runs great now. Maybe 250 rounds down range with no issues. Very pleased.

It is obvious why these things are so highly regarded. The thing is like a laser beam.

Yep. Friend of ours was wanting to take concealed carry class. She hasn’t shot a pistol since she was a child and has no recollection of what it was like. She and a group of friends have a ladies only class (12 of them) set up for a class a week from today. Her husband has very little experience shooting as well.

So, two Sundays ago I had them both over for ~2 hour session at the dining room table going over the 4 Rules, basic handgun function, etc. Then we headed to the range today. She was told they could shoot 22/380/9 at the class using provided pistols, or bring their own.

We started with suppressed M&P 22C. I explained on the ride there that most new shooters were worried about the sound and/or the recoil. Shooting suppressed removes one of those. Them she would realize the sound wasn’t directly related to the recoil. Shot one mag suppressed, then one unsuppressed.

Next I wanted her to shoot 9mm just to see the difference. Instead of putting a silencer on the G23 (with 40-9 barrel) I’d brought, I let her shoot a couple rounds from the Maxim 9 to get an idea of the recoil. Then she shot a mag in the G23. Did great with both.

Wanted to give them a break from focusing on the handguns so we shot the suppressed 15-22 SBR and suppressed AR-9.

Then I told her it was a mental reset. Pretend she’s just finished the classroom portion of her class. I put up a full size silhouette and laid a tape measure out. She shot the minimum test requirements, 10 shots each at 3/5/7 yards. She realized (and more so her husband said he was no longer worried) that she was gonna be ok on the shooting portion of the course.

I gave them the pre-range assignment of watch ~90 second clip of Aim Small, Miss Small from The Patriot. Then used a splatter target to show why that was important. Don’t just attempt to hit the black...aim for the red. Just like I’d talked about aiming for the X, not just the green. She emptied a mag from 7 yards at this one.

I put my hand there to demonstrate to her she just put all the holes in an area I could pretty much cover with my palm.

Both of them were very appreciative and enjoyed themselves. 4 hours well spent IMHO.

Went on a road trip today to pick up a new gun, a Swiss K31. On the way back, I went by DPRC to try it out. Just 5 rounds for now. I also ran a few rounds through a P938 and a GP100. I wasn’t at the range long, but it was still a good time.
