Rumor has it it's a rebranded gen3 PSA AK 47 but I just can't see the logic behind that. It would make sense if you were to sell it at a vastly different price but that simply is not the case. Opinions?

JJE Capital purchased DPMS during the great Remington sell-off. JJE also owns PSA. So, this is probably an attempt to attract lower-tier AR fans who already know of and/or trust the DPMS name. PSA has already cornered the market on lower-tier AK fans.

Kinda like Ford and Mercury - basically the same stuff under a different moniker.

But they are selling around the same?

Yep. On Atlantic's website now for $750. And Atlantic is even throwing in a cleaning rod at that price lol.

Marketing 101 - make the consumer believe they have choices, especially at a specific price point.

That's the odd part, that is not much different from the price for the PSA AKs. I just don't see the logic behind the move if it's true that it's a rebranded PSA AK.

I guess what's so odd about that? Again think of Ford/Mercury, General Motors back when it had a thousand sub-brands all sharing the same parts, or something like Bridgestone/Firestone - consumers feel like they're getting a deal by shopping around but at the end of the day, the parent company still gets paid.

There's another train of thought here - that JJE may be moving its budget line of AKs away from the PSA name for whatever reason (maybe sales have fallen off), so that PSA-branded guns can focus on the higher quality GF5 and related series. For years now, PSA's website has been littered with different AK offerings and plenty of empty promises. They've had so many damned irons in the fire and a seemingly new AK flavor every few months. It is very hard to keep track. I wouldn't be surprised to see the cheaper GF3s and other basic models become DPMS guns and the PSA website trimmed down a bit to focus on "higher-tier" offerings.

Also, not to drive your thread too far into the weeds but if you haven't heard, there is yet another PSA "sister company" called Soviet Arms, which is building Russian surplus kits on PSA receivers with FN barrels. There's some chatter that SA will offer ammo under this name at some point, but we can save that for another thread.

I would never buy a poniac vibe! That's genral motors garbage. I'll buy a nice reliable toyata matrix.

Interesting, I did a quick google but did not find anything on a company called "Soviet Arms", how new are they?

Maybe they did it for legal reasons. To separate the companies in case of lawsuits or change of laws. That way they can close or sale and not effect the larger company holdings? We had a similar thing with the manufacturer I worked for. Ammo was called a different business and firearms something else

DPMS has a their foot in lots of retailers, big boxes and LGS'. Kind of an easy way to open that market to PSA.

I wouldn't touch it.
