DPRC 2-Gun Rimfire (Great match for beginners)

I have a 10/22 and a MkII 5.5" heavy barrel. Could use a few more magazines.

This is what I started with.
Basic 10/22. I added a Kidd trigger kit and extractor. The cheap truglo red dot I bought as a placeholder until I decided on something else but it worked great and never broke. Still works! Gun never held me back if I am being honest. Don't have to spend much to do well and/or have fun.
First couple matches I shot open sights with a Mark 3 5" pistol.

I just have to see what the MkII likes to eat.

My 10/22 does pretty good with CCI mini mags. It doesn't like the SV. Bought it new in 1983 IIRC.

Minimags are what I always used in mine, rifle and pistol. Worked great.

A lot of the good guys seem to use CCI standard. But yeah whatever runs good!

Listen to this man, folks. This is the truth right here. He knows what he's talking about.

Sure, ok. I have a disease where I can't stop buying and building race guns. But my problem doesn't have to be your problem, ya know? A good trigger and a decent dot and you're off and running.

Used to go to the matches at Caswell many moons ago and am starting to really miss them. Getting off the sidelines and will start attending these starting next month after reading thru this thread again for like the 20th time

I miss the caswell matches.
It was a simpler time then.

So last match we had falling steel. This is something new for our event.

There were 15 total pieces of steel. The shooters started by loading up the rifle and pistol with 10 rounds each for a total of 20. That gave them an extra 5 rounds to get the job done.

At the sound of the timer “beep” the shooter would shoot the first gun until it was empty. Then they would lay it down on the table and pick up the other gun to finish the stage. The Texas Star made it really fun. Here is what the stage looked like.

The ram and the bobcat were fixed plates. We don’t have quite enough of the falling steel to do the whole stage but we will work on that.

Everyone I spoke to really liked it so we are hoping to incorporate this type of stage every once in a while.
I have to say, the falling steel made my day. And what you can't tell from the picture is the three round plates at the far right are behind each other from the firing line. Hitting moving targets on the Texas star was a fun challenge too. You guys did a great job on the setup for the match.

So we have lots of folks borrowing equipment this weekend. Which is awesome! The only downside is I have to clean them all in preparation for the match. ;)

The secret to keeping a 10/22 running is a short list.

1. Clean the dang thing
2. Put a quality extractor in it.
3. Replace worn out recoil springs.

If you do these things your gun will run. Unless it’s cold outside. Then you will want to get some hand warmers and keep your ammo toasty.

If the temp is below 55 degrees, I use those electronic hand warmers to keep my ammo and loaded magazines warm. Lower temps cause the priming compound in the rim of the case to act funny sometimes.

Also it helps to keep your magazines warm so that wax on your rounds doesn’t harden and not feed properly.

At a World’s match a couple years ago, I came up to the firing line and when it was my turn to make ready, I opened the insulated lunch box with my heated magazines. The RO just about fell over when a cloud of steam rolled out of that thing. But guess who didn’t have any malfunctions due to the cold temps?

This month we will have stages with 5-7 static plates, falling steel, and Metal Madness Unlimited. So a mixed format for sure. Still very easy to hit the targets if you aim.

If you don’t have equipment don’t let that stop you. We got plenty folks with loaner guns.

I'm going to have a hard time getting to sleep tonight. The excitement/ apprehension of my walk on the wild side has been on my mind since my first taste last Sunday. Do me a favor and put a little extra lubricant on mine so I can go a wee bit faster.;)
I'm referring to my first match shooting OPEN using @Studentofthegun s race guns (thanks Ben). Don't know if I can go as fast as the guns but it should be fun trying. Y'all come on out !

I'm in squad one but may wind up being moved due to sharing of equipment. I'll wear my Battery Oaks hat , tell me " hey".

Would be cool to get all of the cff'ers in one squad so we can all meet.

I understand that there are some reasons why they may not want that to happen though. Don't wanna gum up the works for anybody.

As long as you all coordinate and register right when it opens, I think that could happen.

Other interesting things of note:

49 shooters are signed up and squadded
27 shooters are over the age of 55
9 women are shooting the match. 7 of which are in one squad

That is pretty excellent attendance for a February match.

Good times at DPRC today in Rimfire Match. Had a good chat with @C-doodle and @amyracecar . Congrats to Mr Doodle for his top 10 finish. Very impressive , there are some very good shooters in that neighborhood. There was one particular Student that was first in class in more ways than one. See you in March. Thanks BP.

The match signup is…well it’s up.

We must be doing something right because it is filling up really fast. Even though we increased the number of slots I think we are gonna be full again.

Match may run until 2pm or so. That’s longer than some would prefer but when we made it shorter last month, lots of people that drove a long way complained. They wanted to shoot more and I can’t say I blame them.

Prize match is the second Saturday in August. We are working hard on the prize table to have some nice things and hopefully the new shooters and those needing equipment will have the luck of the draw.

In completely unrelated news…there is a po boy sandwich shop opening in Pittsboro. Which could be a great place to meet after the match and talk about falling steel and why it is so dang fun. This technically has nothing to do with Rimfire I’m just really excited about it.

Makes me wanna join the competition just to get in on the sammiches!

The sandwiches and snacks are how we reel you in but you end up staying for the Rimfire shenanigans.

Did you know this is the same people who own Postal Fish Company?!

Yeah it was gonna be stormy in the morning which is when we were supposed to be shooting.

The Po Boy place hasn’t opened up but it won’t be long now. That’s the only good news I’ve got I’m afraid.

Signup is open. Got the last spot on my own dang squad. Waited 40 minutes from the time the email went out. Apparently that was almost too long.

Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, we’ll be there with the usual snacks and loaner guns.
