EDC pocket knife suggestions

For anybody looking at a smallish fixed blade EDC I can recommend the Knights Element Hummingbird. I got mine through the Kickstarter campaign this Spring. They are well built with an excellent kydex sheath with multiple carry options to choose from:

I don’t like buying disposable things. I don’t have any crazy-expensive knives, but I wouldn’t consider an 8Cr13MoV or Aus8 knife in 2024. You’re buying a handle and a trademark at that point. Sure, it’s a step up from Victorinox “steel” but leagues behind materials like the Chinese/Taiwanese D2 steel found in modern budget knives like CJRB, Sencut/Civivi, Knafs, etc.

My go-to “carry” knife for years has been a Spyderco Chaparral. Thin, super light, just under 3 inches, and the blade is CTS-XHP, which holds an acute edge like crazy but is resistant to chipping. It will open packages, slice cheese, cut apples, prep meats and fish, shave hair… and I can’t remember the last time it touched a stone. It maintains well on a strop and maybe touches ceramic every couple years.

My cardboard workhorse is a Spyderco Para3LW in full-serrated SpydieEdge. I moved house last year and we have been buying furniture at a steady pace for 18 months. A fully serrated knife in decent steel with decent geometry will outcut and outlast a plain edge for separating abrasive, messy media like cardboard. It’s not great for most things, but I have filled dumpsters with cardboard and not had to think about sharpening.

For four months, I have been experimenting with the Leatherman Free K2. It’s a decently heat-treated hollow-ground 420HC blade—probably the weak point of the knife, but it strops sharp quickly and holds an edge pretty well—with some nifty locking tools in the back: tiny eyeglass screwdriver, a 2.5D Philips head, a caplifter, a scraper, etc. I have loved using it. There’s something reassuring about being able to fix a loose eyeglass temple or fasten the odd screw with a normal pocket knife.

Beautiful design. Can see the Knight style.

I've carried a SOG Terminus in cryo D2 for the last 2-3 years. Use it daily and work the hell out if it and it has held up great. Highly recommended for a good quality working knife. Hard to beat for about $55.00.

I just bought a benchmade 940-1 Osborne from Fuquay gun it’s my new edc, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. This knife is perfect.

Nice knife, a little small for edc imho
I’ve had crkt and kershaw blades in the past but never a knife $300+ I work in an office environment and still like to carry a tiny cloud Defense flashlight, burts bees chapstick and my new Osborne 940-1 all fit in the small pocket above my right front pocket. I don’t like things loose in my pockets so the footprint of the Osborne was key it’s sleek enough for my preferences and light enough that it won’t weigh me down so I can run away screaming like a bi%ch when the situation gets tough.

My boss has a spiderco shaman very nice knife but that’s wide. I’m still eyeing the Spyderco Kapara

The Osborne has a 3.4in blade. What is a good size/model of knife in your opinion?

Hello all,

I am looking for suggestions on a pocket knife for everyday use.

Background...

I am a mechanical engineer, and am very hands on. ThIs would be used for stripping wire, opening boxes, and light industrial applications.

I DO NOT like multi tools

I currently use a tanto style knife but it is a cheap knife that doesn't hold an edge.

Let me know what your suggestion would be
Get a cheap box opener with replaceable blades

I’m onto a Benchmade Bugout after running through 3 or 4 other folders as EDC. eBay is a great source for refurbished used knives that are still worth MSRP for fractions of that price.

I carry one until I drop it in the ocean or until I break the blade.
