Ethics and re-selling ammo (at what point is it price gouging?)

Yeah, some amount of ammo I'd consider a "need" in our society, kinda like a fire extinguisher, but I think even at current prices there's enough going around for everyone to have a basic level of home/personal defense and critter control/hunting. Hopefully in the US that's all we'll ever need, and the bonus bulk packs can be for blasting all kinds of trash on Saturdays again (remember back two years ago when we did that?). If it ever became a middle-east type of situation here, then the term gouging might apply, like Shkreli with the daraprim or something..

I have only sold to two people. Both times Federal .22 in a 550 box for $40. This was in January. I heard back that both people complained about me charging too much.

Never again.
no good deed

people are fools sometimes, and those times are coming more frequently.

This is really helpful! Holy crap though $4/rd for some win deer season?
This is what I normally shoot. Still find it occasionally at Walmart for $1/round.
Iā€™ve got a couple hundred rounds of it. Maybe I should sell mine

Just exchange ā€œmy houseā€ with ā€œmy ammoā€ and ask yourself so you still feel bad about charging more. No one expects someone to sell their house for what they paid for it out of the goodness of their hearts. You sell it for what the market is demanding.

And I would give you 550 Free if you needed it because I am certain there would come a time you would return the favor if needed.
I gave a box to a friend the last time I was at your house because he needed some.

So true. No agent would let someone sell a house for no profit, at least around here...
So are you a horder if you have 30,000 rounds of 380,9,40,45,223,30-06,270,243,30-30................................ that you re loaded?

I think the word is producer, or manufacturer, and personally I wish the law would permit you to sell those!

I have a rule - I do not make money or profit from friends. If I sell something - I do so for whatever price I paid for it or even slightly less. I will let somebody even get a better deal - all so I can sleep with a clear head.
I believe what comes around goes around.

No, it makes you a hoarder. And you need to shoot more

And that's where it gets tough... if someone comes to buy something and you end up talking for a good while, you often become friends...

That's a good rule. Friends and money don't mix well.

Shipping will get you because you need a hazmat label and required adult signature.

This is incorrect. All you need is an ORM-D label and to send it either UPS or FEDEX ground. No signature required. Loaded cartridges are not hazmat items. Primers and powder are.

Prices for Dillon die sets outrageous on ebay and elsewhere.

"Hazmat" was the wrong term. Sorry. Whatever that black and white diamond shape thing is.

But my friend said he goes straight to the UPS hub and they require him to require an "adult signature", which costs another 7 or 8 bucks.

If it ever came to a middle-east type of situation here, then "hoarder" would mean "prepared" and "gouging" would mean "I know where to find the ammo I need"...whether by hook or crook.

Tempting to sell some of mine at that price! I wonder why the .270 is THAT much more than .223. I wouldn't think that the demand is greater, especially this time of year.
At a guess, I would say many ammo companies are either not making the less popular calibers, or not importing the less popular calibers.
Try to find some 303 British FMJ right now, for example.

Since deer season isn't till most of the year is over, they're probably not making it. Other side of the coin is true, too. Why would you buy it this far out?

FWIW...and I just learned this in the last month or so...

The ORM-D label was retired at the end of 2020. Now itā€™s just the black & white diamond decal/label.

Iā€™m not say they donā€™t do that...but their policy doesnā€™t seem to indicate thatā€™s required? He should have this printed out next time he goes. šŸ˜Ž

Yeah, I always ship from a UPS Customer Center, not a UPS Store. The UPS stores are all franchises and service/results vary.

Print, clip and tape...

I find capitalism extremely ethical. I have something. It is worth something to me. If you want it, I am willing to give it to you if you offer me more than what I value the item. Itā€™s a purely voluntary system.

Me being forced to sell something I value at lower price than I value it is what I would consider extortion and highly unethical.

Ethics and capitalism don't always make the best bed partners....
Iā€™m curious where the ethical murky waters would be in the context of this thread, which is about an individual selling personal property. Honest question.

It essentially comes down to the questions of ā€œis ammo a basic life necessityā€ and ā€œis the current market unduly preventing people from obtaining basic necessities because of greed of a few.ā€ Personally I think that the second one is not true at current time and I agree with most of what has been said here. I do enjoy the diversity of opinion and enthusiastic participation though, thanks yā€™all!

It was basically a fancy way to say are yā€™all gonna hate me if I post ammo for too much, apparently consensus is no. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

In this case, I am not sure I think there are ethical waters: prices may be high, but if in line with the market, it's not price gouging. He's not a business, I think he should get as much for it as the market can bear.

As GoWolgpack said, he would not sell to a CFF member at the current prices or would I. Not sure I would sell to a member at all but I would give some rounds to a member/friend if they need them for SD only.
