FEB/MAR 2021 50 Yard Rimfire Challenge

I’m don’t know Tim. Something goofy is going on. The odd shots are always high at 12:00. Ammo velocity variations could only affect vertical, but it still seems too large.

Designed to be printed on regular 8.5x11 paper and shot at 50 yards.

Yesterday was rain and cold but we made an appearance. Paper wasn’t going to work out so me and the boy camped out at @VOD Tactical pistol bay and plucked spent shotgun shells at 30 yards and ran some steel. We even go the 930 tactical out to generate spent shotgun shells.

Since I had the day off for President's Day, I went down to the range this morning and took a crack at this target. Another cold and wet day, and a little breezy first thing this morning. But the wind finally died down and I pulled off this best attempt.

280-5X

H&R M-12
Sightron SII 36X42 optic
Bald Eagle BE1006 front rest
Protektor #13 rear bunny bag
Wolf MT ammo (Eley)

Nice shooting as always. Wind gotcha a little on those two maybe.

Yeah, those little gusts do catch you at the most inopportune moment(s)! Going to try it again with the .17HMR next time and go for the 8X clean!

Today was the first time with the new optic too... upgraded from a BSA 8x32 to the Sightron 36X. It took a few sighters to get it dialed in, but the fine dot/crosshairs and 1/8MOA are really nice!

Gonna warn you, it will take 8x. ;) I still haven’t taken the time to load those first targets I shot, but the wind kept the win available for someone.

Going from 8x to 36x definitely makes a massive difference. I bet that 36x Sightron is nice. I liked the Sightrons I’ve owned a lot. I’ve always wanted to try a fixed mag scope too.

I have a T36 that I bought years ago and kick myself for not buying another one before they stopped making them. Now the ebay prices are crazy high.

Got out today. Windy but at least it wasn’t raining. These were my best two out of about 6. Wind was messing with me.
Marlin 25n w/ Leupold Vari-x 3 4.5-14x40mm
Front and rear bags.
CCI Standard

I am a tad confused about the scoring thing so you all can score it.

Looks like:
1) 260 and 3 or 4 X’s. (I can’t see the 6 well)
2) 220 and 2 X’s

There are two rings for points, 5 point ring and 10 point ring. Multiply the ring times the number of the bird. Count your center circle hits for your X’s.

Here is closer look at 6. It’s a toss up.

I feel it is not either. It’s a dead duck though!
Hard to really tell. I may have given him the benefit of the doubt, but if the person with it in hand says No, I’m not going to argue.

The thing about paper is that it shrinks around the hole, and it is sometimes hard to tell without a plug. Without fresh heavy paper or card stock on a new backer, it is hard to get a great hole. The cut out hole is usually less than the actual width of the bullet “hole”, but the score actually goes out to the grease ring. Sometimes it is hard to see the edge with tearing.

This is why when you see people measure groups, you can look at their measurement and know something isn’t right. They measure edge to edge and subtract .223 (subtract a number greater than the actual measurement on the paper), but you can look at the group and tell by the spacing that it doesn’t make sense. The holes are often smaller than their actual scoring measurement.

Plugs are needed for real competition, for those reasons, to give a consistent visual measurement.

Very good information Smok3y! Someone that knows what they are talking about, giving us some experienced information. Thank you.

That being said, the general rule for non serious stuff is does the cutout circle touch the edge of the line? That is about the only way to compare consistently.

when i help score a “fun” match

i always say

“ties go to the shooter”

because...who cares

if it is a legit match then what @Smok3y said

that said i wouldn’t care about a legit match either 😂
I like his thinking more. 😂.
its only for fun and I will never come in first. Just doing it for fun and challenging myself. And I am having a ball for sure.

For sure. That is why I enjoy this. It is having some fun the the guys/gals without having to go far and you don’t have to worry about beating anyone but yourself.

Today I went to the range and gave it a try. My set up - CZ 455 Varmint Evolution with a Bushnell AR223 4-18x scope, front rest, rear bag, shooting Norma Tac-22. Sighted the rifle in with some loose ammo and shot a 6 round group (top left) and a 10 round group (bottom left) on the Champion target. The bird targets were a lot harder for me to see. These are the best two out of three.IMG_20210221_150244282.jpgIMG_20210221_150525253.jpgIMG_20210221_154628200.jpgIMG_20210221_154610035.jpgIMG_20210221_154605073.jpg

Timfoilhat......... a friend of mine was having a similar situation and was very frustrated. The next time he was at my place we scoped the bore and found a mild case of carbon ring. Once I got that cleaned out he stopped having the problem. Now, whenever he comes over he wants me to look at his chamber.

Isn’t that a Boyds stock? I have a similar one.

I'll take a look.

Finally was able to shoot the target today. It was windy and some what cold. Targets were bad. 1 out of four was ok. :( Will post picture later after I figure out scoring and take pic of target.

So here is the target: Hopefully I scored it correctly. 280 On the 2 point target I am not sure if it is a two or not. I lost my plug. Looked at it with a mag glass and I believe it is. I will let you all decide. The other three targets were put directly in the trash.

Rifle: Anschutz 64sbr
Ammo: Eley target
Glass: T-36
Wind: NE 10
Heavy overcast

I went to the range today but didn't shoot. With all the rain we have had our range is a muddy wet mess. Hope it dries up soon! 🦆🐟:)

Today definitely wasn’t as nice as they were calling for. Yesterday wasn’t either. Shot some yesterday, but no good targets. Think it was time for a cleaning, because I had tons of fliers that didn’t make sense with the wind.

Never did post these, because I was waiting until I got to go shoot an 7X. Looks like my best targets of the month were still the ones I shot at the beginning. Only managed to get 280/6X cleanly. Maybe we can get some better weather, and I can get back out there for an 7X with both types of pellets.

Pic of the gun is in a earlier post up top.

FX Crown
JSB 18gr (.22 pellets)
280/6X (not sure why I wrote 7X)

5 was super close, but I wanted to make it obvious on the next one.

Looks like a winner to me!

ECNC for the win! All 7 X’s.

Well, congrats to ECNC and RATS for me as it looks like I'm a day late and a dollar short. I shot the target again yesterday using my .17HMR and finally pulled off a 7X clean (after 3 attempts), but I neglected to scan and post yesterday.

It was super-foggy yesterday morning, and most of my hits only nicked the bulls though.
