In 2021 when I found out I was having my first born, I had a sit down with my father. When I was a kid, my dad was was in shape, the natural way. No cheating, hacks or excuses.

Over the decades, he convinced himself that he had low T, and was never going to get back in shape. He even went to the doctor trying to get on TRT which was denied after a few attempts. The undeniable fact is, he was being lazy and eating like a 15 year old on summer break.

After discussing with him the necessity of taking back ownership of his health and how I'd like for my children to know their grandparents in a similar fashion that I knew them (energetic, happy and as healthy as one can be) he has found a system and 'diet' that works for him and taken his health back. My mother has taken up working out and training with him as well.

Started off steady and progressively increased intensity of his exercise and workouts. He is not on any T boosters, and makes use vitamin supplements he finds suits him as well creatine and whey proteins.

My man turned 52 on April 24th 2023 and is knocking on the door of his physical shape he was in his mid 20's.

Proud son moment here, but I wanted to share his progress.

Knocking on 50’s door myself and have been really working on my physical condition the last 18 months. I have a ways to go to look like him, but I am working on it.

I know low T is real and sometimes treatment is needed, but I think a lot of it can be helped, if not corrected altogether, in most men with lifestyle changes. Our American diet contains a lot of estrogen and estrogen producing foods and chemicals, especially in processed foods. And there is nothing like good old fashioned exercise and strength training to help the body kick back into producing T that isn’t needed when we are desk jockeys and couch potatoes. Looks like your dad is proof of this.

Good on you that you're getting after it! definitely isn't as easy for him(and for you) as it is for me to hit the ground running, throw weights and recover from it. And definitely starts with what we're consuming and what we're doing for all of us.

Good job! My VERY fit sons are harassing my wife and I to get on an exercise regimen because we’re at the age where everything starts falling apart.
You sure you need to exercise? I've seen you clean a plate fit for the whole family in one sitting, with no where to store it, then go right back to work with out a nap or anything. What's up with that? 🤔

You sure you need to exercise? I've seen you clean a plate fit for the whole family in one sitting, with no where to store it, then go right back to work with out a nap or anything. What's up with that? 🤔
I can be a bit hyper, & my bowels definitely are. Having a physical job site helps.

I'll check with him on what he commonly eats but i know he describes it as 3 home-made meals a day only for his 'diet' and does make use of liquid protine drinks.
I would like to know myself. While I know we are a little different and what works for might not another. But with a little changing it can be made to work. But the biggest factor is your motivation to put in the work. I’d like to his workout routine if he doesn’t mind sharing.
 
That type of lifestyle change at 52 is admirable. I lost both of my parents around that age due to lifestyle choices, big ups to your father

Wish there were a silver bullet detail that i could share to really make all the difference for guys my age. So the very long story short, is, there's really no way to get around the hard parts that are required for me. I'm 2 years into my initial 3 year process. And if I hear one more YouTuber use clickbait promises that we all can get major results in 90 days, or in 3-6 months, I’ll lose it. It's just not true for most of us and at best, unsustainable. A lot of people buy into the myths, And understandably get very frustrated and end up bailing out because it gets difficult and it seemingly doesn't happen for them. Primarily because of unrealistic expectations. The reality for me is, real sustainable change is realized in 12-36 months not 3-6 months. Our mileage will vary dramatically from the guy next to us in traffic.


My recommendation is as follows:
1. Cut down sugar near zero if possible, and all snacking as much as you can. Moderate treats are fine after I've earned them, but 3 clean meals a day is more than enough to get healthy.
2. drink as close to a gallon of water per day as you can handle, if it's too much start where you can and the more you dehydrate through the days coming, the more you'll want to rehydrate.
3. be consistent with your diet, (high protein, low carb, low fat diet), and again water! Absolute zero on sodas and try to skip tea and juices. I don't drink alcohol, but I'd avoid all atleast in the beginning.
4. Staying active daily and start small with high motivation a good community or just one friend really helps there

The foods I primarily eat are:
Salmon, halibut, Turkey off the bird(I avoid cold cuts), Venison, beef and lamb, Eggs cooked anyway you like.

A lot of Vegetables, all of them depending on what you like

Brown rice is really the only consistent grain in my diet, outside of the occasional roll. Occasionally a fiber bar as a day time snack.

I try to avoid cheeses and most dairy, get plenty of the good from that from whey shakes.

Find out what vitamins and minerals you might be insufficient in or aren't naturally intaking enough of and make the adjustments to get them or use supplements. I won't share the supplements I use because you may very well not need them, but talk to your doc & research different supplements and the companies who sell them but don't break the bank over this one. Most of what you want is found in foods, good old fashion sun exposure or produced naturally with exercise and recovery.


I don’t really have a routine but i work things pretty consistently, no rest days in the beginning and now on my 'rest day' i still take a nice walk atleast 1 mi. minimum and light weight lifting at home just to keep the gears moving. Whatever you do, keep moving towards your realistic, achievable goals. Make the goal(s) of the day suck for where you are today, you'll want to know tomorrow that you achieved a goal yesterday.

My first goal I set starting back was walking, just a walk through town or around the neighborhood, then it was walking the route and turning around and doing it again, then that twice a day, then i started running the routes. For weight training to start i picked up a few different weight dumbbells, a curl bar and weights, pull up bar ect. For home And eventually added the gym in to my regime the beginning of this year when I started to notice I was working good in areas but neglecting others like core, back, shoulders and legs.

Lastly and most important never forget to praise God for the health, wellness and ability that He gives you! No luck to it, you've got this!!!

Thank you (and your Dad) for all the great info. I am working on a similar turnaround myself, and have just started back to some running last week.

Dad looks fantastic, and I really appreciate his realistic approach to the diet and timeline. I am shifting to a much more meat-based diet, and while many seem to get great results from going full carnivore I just don't think it's realistic for me, at least not in the short term.

Keep up the great work and thanks again for this thread!
 
I really do love hearing you guys with more time under the sun than i, getting back to it. Even if least of all, it does me no good to know someone doesn't care or want to physically feel better and potentially add to their days. Someone out there cares to know you're still kicking. At best, you save them a litany of complications. At worst your existence just annoys them, and someone like that will fester more over your accomplishments LOL
