There is a twist that some may overlook …

While 9mm and 5.56 are returning there are way more that are still hens teeth … like .380 and .38special. Companies are turning out truckloads of the common stuff because it is selling for the various reasons AND they can just run machines without reconfiguring for a different round. We may see the higher demand stuff fill back in (at a higher price) but those with lower demand will still be at “when you see it buy it” … I am still on back order for a case of 2 1/2” 20 gauge paper shells for my vintage LC Smith and RTS has no guess when.

True. If you are the manufacturer you are going to continue to pump out 9mm and 556 because you know it will sell at a good profit and you do not have to retool you simply run the line 24/7 with 0 downtime.

Bringing this one back from the dead. I personally believe the ammo shortage is over but prices have remained higher than we saw in 2019 early 2020. Almost everyone has ammo in stock it is just not cheap.

I do not believe it is over. The prices are leveling off. But it seems still hard to find certain calibers/gauges.

I agree. Still can't put my hands on things that were not uncommon before this started. And by this, I guess I have a couple of benchmarks. "Pre-Sandy Hook" (the first 37 years of my life) and during the "Trump slump".

Use to be I wanted a designated gun room … now I want a designated ammo room. A cabinet is nice but with previous ammo scares, especially the 2020 COVID type, along with price increases extra ammo has become almost a hedge against future problems. It is important to think beyond bulk also … hunting ammo is important also. I had a couple friends hitting small LGS‘s during the COVID shortages trying to find .30-30 or such for hunting. You don’t need say 500 rounds of Hornady LEVERevolution .30-30 hunting ammo but when you need a box of 7mm WSM and you friend has extra but needs .30-30 bartering works. The days of stopping by the LGS or even BPS any being able to for sure being able to pick up this weekend’s hunting ammo is pretty much gone.

Interesting I was just in the LGS and the wall was full. Pistol ammo shotgun shells all sorts of rifle rounds. Maybe I’m just lucky in my area. For the most part I shoot pretty common calipers so maybe I just don’t track the more esoteric stuff.

Back when this thread was started, I voted 2 years. Its now been two years. While I can find ammo if I want it, its still at the shortage prices, and the selection isn't even close to what it was 4 years ago.

I don't think the shortage is over. I think some of the supply has recovered, and high prices have cut the demand, so that more ammo is available to those willing to buy it.

I've really cut down on my shooting since the shortage started. Been working through my stockpile of reloading supplies and shooting that instead. Limiting 9mm, 556, etc to what I need to shoot to maintain my skills, and not just blasting for kicks. My 22's have been getting more range time, especially a 22 revolver. I've been lucky, and I've only bought one box of ammo in the last two years. I told myself I wouldn't buy any more until the prices came down to a reasonable level, but I'm starting to think that's most likely going to be 4-5 years from now.

Common calibers can be found easily. Prices are higher than 'before', but that's to be expected given current inflation rates and world events. Like others have said, the less common calibers aren't so easy to come by. I think that's just Supply/Demand doing its thing.

Yeah, for now. With the current all out push for new anti-gun legislation, I forsee ammo drying up again. Check availability with the big online stores, like Midway to get a better overall national view of availability. Some stuff continues to be unavailable or gone as soon as it is stocked.

To me the issue right now is primers more than ammo.

Powder! A lot harder to find then ammo.

I have been looking for powder to load 12 gauge target loads. No dice. Have plenty of powder for 20 gauge that I got a couple of years ago.

I'm happy that folks can find some kind of ammo in what we are calling the common calibers NOWADAYS.

But so what.

Outside of plinking and zombie ammo, most of my "working" guns are set up for a specific load. Some of which may have been VERY common a few short years ago.

Everybody reloading now?

Everybody re-zeroing when they find that cornucopia of 1-4 boxes at the big box store but they are a different load?

I stocked up on what I set my guns up for a long time ago. But there are specific gaps that I just can't seem to fill or shore up.

And I hate to sound too fuddy, but outside of the gun forums and the suburbs, I think you may find one man's esoteric .22 Magnum and .30-30 to be another man's somewhat ubiquitous round in his neighborhood.

I will concede, that at that point, volume of sales/supply and demand may dictate the manufacturers priority on output.

However, no matter the reason, it's still a shortage.

After the idiot's speech tonight, whatever is on the shelf will probably be gone tomorrow. Democrats must be heavily invested in the firearms industry. Every time they run their mouths, they scare people into going out and buying more. Isn't it ironic that the democrats and their BS are the reason why so many Americans have guns? lol

You sir are thinking all wrong!
Never get so behind you are looking for hunting ammo for you gun for next year let alone the weekend......

I planned ahead. Have enough hunting ammo for the next 50 years!

Sad thing is I will only be around 30 to 35 at the most!

When I use store bought ammo for a hunting gun I pick up.about 8 to 10 boxes with said gun or before. All same lot and type.

I did that with my latest new caliber 6.5 maybe 5 to 6 years back. It was 10 boxes.
I shoot only 5 to 10 rounds a year with it and shot a box to start to zero and get dope for the gun. I still have enough for maybe another 6 years or more. In todays day and time if I were looking I would go to the shop and ask for 10 boxes and brand X gun. Let me know when you have the order in.
One is not good without the other.
Days of buying a gun and a box then needing to rezero and get dope every year are long past. That was when ammo was cheap and you did it just because. Find what worms and stick to it now.

I think that as the year goes on, those calibers that are less popular will start to reappear on shelves. Manufacturers will start to turn out more because the 9mm/5.56/308 crowd can find their preferred caliber in plentiful supply. During the beginning of ammo apocalypse they were just trying to keep up with the nato calibers.

Are you seeing 62gr brass (i.e. non-penetrator) 5.56 NATO (i.e. not .223 REM) ammo in bulk for 40c/rnd, yet? I can't find it for less than 58-59c/rnd + S&H ... meaning it's still 150% the pre-COVID/BLM cost.

If you're seeing 40c/rnd for the above, then please let me know where.

$539 landed for a case.

$489 Shipped for a case.

Methinks you missed the "non-penetrator" requirement. i.e. Can't be M855, can't be SS109, etc.

No steel or tungsten cores; just lead and brass.

Yeah I missed that. The only 62Gr I have seen is the AE223N but it is .223 not 556.

Although I can't blame someone for doing this, it helps explain why shelved are empty and prices can stay high. The fact that many people are purchasing large amounts of ammo as soon as it becomes available is what is extending the "shortage". At some point, once people have their basements filled with ammo, prices will drop and a greater variety of ammo will be available. In a few years, I expect to occasionally find cheap ammo again, largely because "Grandpa's stash of ammo" will become a common item at estate sales.

10 boxes of ammo is not a large amount. Sorry!

Also I removed no ammo from the shelves. I ask for them to provide me the amount of ammo with the gun I want if they desire to sell it.

Sounds like you almost feel with we should limit the ammo people can buy or have?
Its up to the shop, I just ask for the ammo.

BTW
Large amounts of ammo, just my thoughts would be if I ask for 10 cases and not boxes.
