In Virginia now

Small minor correction
For better or worse, get Republicans back into Virginia's politics to get this trash eventually repealed

Also, let this be a wake up call to those of us in NC -- elections have consequences!!!

The issue really comes down to population density. I have lived in MD, VA, WV, KY and NC. Rural states with big population centers have trouble in statewide elections. If I was in VA now the biggest thing I would be worried about is this.

SJ 6 Constitutional amendment; Governor's term of office (first reference).
Introduced by: Adam P. Ebbin | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:
Constitutional amendment (first resolution); Governor's term of office. Permits a Governor elected in 2025 and thereafter to succeed himself in office. The amendment allows two four-year terms (either in succession or not in succession) but prohibits election to a third term. Service for more than two years of a partial term counts as service for one term.

VA Governors have line item veto power. The offset to that power is that they only serve 4 years. If they can serve for 8 they have to limit the Govs power and remove the line item veto.

Just saw the local news say the VA democrats are going to "continue pursuing gun control despite protests".
So what now?
Sure, the hard-left Democrats sponsoring the legislation will try to encourage other Democrats to ignore today's turnout as meaningless.

Realistically, there are some Democrats in the Virginia Assembly who care more about keeping their cushy jobs rather than passing gun control laws.

It depends on the district. Again in a high population district in a suburban or urban area you are going to go all in because the numbers are on your favor. It is going to breakdown district my district and the majority will come down to a few swing areas. Local politics are the same as national politics. #microcosm=macrocosm

Statement of Governor Ralph S. Northam on Lobby Day Demonstration

RICHMOND—We are all thankful that today passed without incident. The teams successfully de-escalated what could have been a volatile situation. This resulted from weeks of planning and extensive cooperation among state, local, and federal partners in Virginia and beyond.

Virginia’s law enforcement and first responders demonstrated tremendous professionalism. I’m proud of their work. I have spoken with Colonel Settle of the State Police, Colonel Pike of the Capitol Police, and Chief Smith of the Richmond Police Department, as well as leaders of the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office, and thanked them for keeping Virginia safe.

Thousands of people came to Richmond to make their voices heard. Today showed that when people disagree, they can do so peacefully. The issues before us evoke strong emotions, and progress is often difficult. I will continue to listen to the voices of Virginians, and I will continue to do everything in my power to keep our Commonwealth safe.

Hey. I have two young adult kids. I can only read but so much stupid in one day.

Yes, I know those were painful words for some of you.
I meant it in the nicest way possible.
And no, not you @B00ger
The force is with you.

Reading in some places (mostly gun forums), where the Debbie Downers are out in full-force, claiming this event was a waste of time and accomplished “nothing”...

Hogwash.

1) I don’t think a soul there was under any illusion the governor or legislature would change their minds about the proposed bills. Knowing this, they still chose to use a day off work, travel on their own dime and voluntarily stand in really frigid temperatures for an opportunity to let their voices be heard, even though they knew it would be falling on deaf ears.

2) Many were expecting only 1500-2000 folks, tops, to show for the event. I believe we can all agree the crowd numbers were exponentially higher....there was a need to be heard and folks, LOTS of them, willingly and enthusiastically answered the call.

3) The media narrative (most every facet of it) got all shot to sh*t. The crowd proved this event was not an issue of white/black, male/female, young/old or gay/straight. The issue was solely about liberty of free citizens...ALL free citizens.

4) Many of the participants were armed with the same weapons that are demonized by politicians and the media. No shots were fired and no one was injured/killed.

5) Armed citizens are not a problem. If that crowd had any intent at all to create a problem, there were enough of them there to do just that and there wouldn’t have been a damned thing anyone could have done to stop them. I know Northam gave all the credit for de-escalation to security personnel staffing the event, but the thing is, there was nothing to de-escalate. There were thousands of armed, pissed off citizens attending and the sole reason the event did not turn into a sh*t show was due to the self-discipline of those citizens...that’s it...that’s all. They were cool customers and it is the only reason the event went smoothly.

5) The citizens in attendance proved they were good stewards. They did not tear anything up or vandalize/destroy property. Some of them even brought trash bags and cleaned up after the event ended.

6) This was a peaceful step in the process. Those folks chose not to “take the gloves off” as a first resort.

In my opinion, this was a win and it was a huge one. The citizens who chose to attend should be commended...every one of ‘em.

If anyone needs a reason to be proud of being a citizen of this Republic, look no further than what happened in Richmond today.

@wsfiredude , well said man. When you can get that many people together and nothing bad happen, it screams BS to what the other side try to make us out to be, that we're not all just a bunch of ill tempered gun guys chomping at the bit to shoot something. I saw people of all walks of life there today, and every video I saw, and the one's who talked were very civil and just explaining why they were there. Sends a very clear message to me.

Not a member over at AR15.com, but some of those folks need to hear this, judging by the negativity I’m seeing over there...much of it coming from folks who didn’t even go.

There were folks at Richmond today that traveled from every corner of the country, just to stand with their fellow citizens...

Today, they were all Virginians.

But what is step #2 now?

the sad part is that it was mostly ignored by the news outlets. Even fox news barely mentioned it but a few times during the day.
the live feeds definitely showed that there were some news agencies there, WAITING for something to happen they could report on...
this event was almost like a tree falling in the forest - nobody noticed except the people who are already in the gun scene.
VAGov is already thanking the police for doing "so much" to keep things orderly... that's the hogwash.

Yep, for sure. I had a good friend whose been in Long Island for a week for work training. She flew in late Friday night, and immediately made plans with two other good friends of our's to roll up to Virginia. I had planned on going, and had the day off, but my supervisor that can run my press when I'm out had emergency neck surgery two weeks ago, and he's doing good to walk right now. And, we are still busy on my press, so.....I know, excuses, but sometime's I'm in a hard place with no one else capable of doing my job. Anyway, she was texting me while there, and after they left, telling me how civil everyone was, and how it was a great thing they were doing up there. I am proud of her and the other two. They rolled up there first thing this morning, and came back this afternoon.

This days message was heard throughout the world.
The solidarity shown by our brethren on this day was noticed by our friends and our enemies, and will be remembered.
The next move will be made by our enemies, be they foreign and domestic, but this day will be in their memory as they plot their next move.

My opinion?

Same deal. Free citizens, peacefully, mobilizing and making noise. Hammer the governor, AG and legislators with calls, emails or visits to voice contempt for anti-liberty legislation. Show up on election day and hand some of these folks their walking papers.

Use every peaceful avenue of recourse possible.

I for one am proud of it going smoothly. Although, I suspect some problems were quietly taken care of and we may never hear.

Out if curiosity, where was the NRA in all of this? Was there even a presence?

Oh...they had their own little separate lobby day on Jan 9th....probably wanted to distance themselves from this one because they thought it would go sideways.

If I read anywhere that they are attempting to take credit for anything that happened today, I will be calling/emailing and let them know what dishonest, deceitful MFers I believe them to be.

What I saw from photos and videos today was an impressive display that was the equivalent of a stern and unquestionable "no" when dealing with an unruly child. I just wonder when that promise will need to be delivered on.

Anti-gun billionaires who invested millions in the 2019 Virginia elections expect a return on that investment. The NRA is fully prepared to work to defeat Governor Northam’s gun grab – but also work to find compromise.”

I'm shocked too. Thrilled, but shocked. Although it's not completely over yet, someone could roll in around 5pm, burn the city to the ground, and we'd still make national headlines as the instigators.
Some are saying this is all smoke and mirrors to hide the real agenda.

The bills referenced are disturbing, how can an individual who is mentally incompetent cast a vote in an election
if they can not legally sign a contract, manage their finances or other matters?

out-fricking-rageous
they bared everything, called for total bans, and this joker wants to find compromise? He's certainly a modern NRA man, isn't he?
Marion Hammer used her clout to call those of us who refuse to give another inch "the enemy within". Wayne has done nothing but stab us in the back. This is EXACTLY why people are giving up on the NRA and going with alternative orgs.

Compromise?

You've gotta be kidding me.

If someone breaks into your house to bust open the safe and rape your wife, it isn't a compromise if he lets you keep half your money.

NRA doesn’t do gun rights anymore. That’s a thing of the past. They do this thing called trick stupid bastards with little education out of their hard earned money and spend it wisely on Italian suits, work vacations, and second homes. They may not have been physically there but they were there in spirit.

I was looking over the images and videos of the day and realized something was missing,..

There was no screaming, shouting, anger, hostility, etc. Everyone actually seemed to be having a good time. I tried to load that video of the black dude with the Trump flag, saying he was Northam in black face. It was hilarious and people are laughing. :D

That's what the NRA doesn't understand anymore. NO MORE COMPROMISING!
