I was looking around trying to locate the info, but have not run across it yet. With that said, can someone toss me a bone and provide the link / thread where I can read more about them…. Or tell me about them. Just a curious mind that wants to know.

Example below:

Some are obvious, such as staff member, vendor, FFL. But not sure bout some others.

10/4! Thanks for the info and link, as that covered the majority. One more, please … “Multi-Factor” Enabled”??
Under Password & Security. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to reduce chances your account is hacked.

I actually don’t think I have ever not been a paying member
I think Charter Member was only offered for 30days or so at the very beginning. As in, that group started the forum. Mostly it was members that moved over from a previous forum. You signed up years later.

charter member

noun

  1. An original member or a founder of an organization.
  2. one of the original members when an organization was founded

The charter badges IIRC were more expensive than the regular lifetime/supporter badges. For whatever time frame was you could buy a “charter member” upgrade for your regular account and have the flair.

Plenty of us that joined in the first couple days don’t have them.

I bet @Alabamacoastie would agree with this!
Yep! I raised this exact idea to the mods about 2 years ago. That's how I got this sweet puddle pirate badge for free!

(I did not ask for puddle pirate, but I like it and wear it with pride!)

Could be wrong here. But Charter life members were those who paid for the lifetime membership as the forum was a fledgling upstart. It was then widened to include yearly memberships as charter member from the beginning.

This was done in appreciation for those who joined in the first month or two (idk exactly) and were willing to financially invest.

No extra monies from what it costs today. Just a subtle "thanks" to those who believed and trusted in this community.

Iirc that was attached for being a paying member at sign up. If you let that lapse at some point it went away
I joined in Dec 2016 around same time several others did some of them are CHARTER members some like myself are not. Has to be that it's a paying thing
Now that y’all mention it, I do recall something about it being a life member thing from the beginning.

I would guess that a search for the term “plank” in 2016 would find the history. All I remember was paying annual plus extra in the first few days.

I’m curious how @Average Joe is both a supporting member and a life member, perhaps a recent upgrade to life? And @Trevillian is a charter member so he’s been here roughly forever but is also a life member and a supporting member, suppose could be an upgrade too.

I’m quite certain the “charter” badge was more expensive than than the normal supporting badges. My memory could be failing me though. I do remember it being explained as a “perk” for those who invested more in the beginning.

There was a thread on here explaining all that back then but I haven’t tried to search for it.

I don’t believe so…

Some people that are Life Members still chip in the $20/yr to help the site…which also gives them the Supporting Member badge.

I’m almost positive that “charter member” was given to those who signed up as paid members within a certain amount of time after the forum was created. It wasn’t a life membership or more expensive, just had to do it within the timeline.

"Plank owners" was a part of the discussion when the owners were deciding what and if they could/should/would do for those first members of our site. Go down that historic "name" and it's consideration and the ultimate decision of the owners here about the term at your leisure. They wanted to show appreciation for strangers who bought in. It was a really open and appreciated time.

I am very lucky to have been invited here in the early days. I was (am) a poor. So my financial support in the beginning was only a yearly membership. So I am a "charter member". If I had the coin I would/could have (personal decision) given the sum for "life member" from the start. Which would have made me a charter "life" member from the start.

Since the early days I've been able to add life member and benefactor as well as maintaining my supporting member status as my finances allowed. So they are "tagged" on my profile as such.

Nothing nefarious. Nothing special. If you supported the forum from the start with your own money. They decided to show their appreciation with a "tag".

The cost of a lifetime membership is the same price today as it was when the place opened.

The badge did n ot cost extra and was added a few weeks later.
See BWs post

Edited to add: merely creating an account did not qualify folks for the badge. The member had to have actually paid within that timeframe.

Well, you had to be invited and there was the late night initiation and the blood oath to secrecy...wait, nevermind...

No it wasn't. It was a perk for those who invested in a startup. Not a "pay more for a title by your name" type of thing....

I believe you’re thinking of the “Benefactor” badge. I recall it being a one-time $50 donation.

I didn’t want to do lifetime right off the bat so I started out as supporting + benefactor, which also got me the charter badge. I’m now lifetime as of a year or two ago, but I’m not “lifetime charter”.

Yup, I remember the plank discussions. Didn’t think there was anything nefarious going on with the titles, never thought about being a life member paying annual dues. Thanks for you contributions, financial and other!
