January 2024 storm(s)

We had bad winds and lost power from 7:30 to about 11:30. That's not too bad, except that the power cut off right as I was starting to fry up a sammich on the stove, which kinda ruint my sammich. About 11, I decided to head to bed and was just about asleep when the power came back on and a ton of lights and other forgotten things with it. And of course, I then had to go reset the days and times on both my thermostats, because we all know heating systems can't work if the day and time isn't set. Then I went to wash my hands and had no water, because my house is on a well system and the pressure tank now needs a reset because the power was out. So I had to get dressed, go out in the wet and cold and crawl under my house - in the dank, zombie-tarantula infested crawlspace - and reset the well tank pressure switch. Then I had to take a shower because I was dirty and covered in spider webs and zombie-tarantula dust. Now, it is after midnight and I am wide awake. Work is gonna be fun tomorrow.

What am I looking at?

Looked at the 10 day forecast on the phone. Google says round 3 on Friday with 100% chance of heavy rain. o_O

Just as the sun started peaking through the clouds I heard a transformer blow and our power went out around 5:30. Of course this was while my wife was cooking. She just finished cooking the chicken and the noodles were just about boiled. I went ahead and got the grill going and finished the casserole outside.
Like any proper redneck, my son and I got in his SxS around 7:30 to ride around the neighborhood and see how many were without power. I didn't see many power trucks out working so decided to pull the little generator out to power the fridges and freezer. Went ahead and plugged the tankless water heater in so the girls could take showers. Power ended up coming back on around 10.

It's not often these days that you find great customer service. Let's face it, things have soured on that front.

These folks were absolutely top notch though and I'm adding them to my Rolodex of service companies to go back to when needed for future work.

I called them at 4:54 pm yesterday. I had an estimate within an hour, they were here at 9:49am and I was writing a very reasonable check at 10:27am.

They cut and ground that whole tree in under 40 minutes. They raked up all the debris and leaves and made the yard cleaner than it was before the tree fell.

I'm impressed!

What's going in with that rain gauge? Seems backwards to me.
The blue plastic with the numbers on it are an insert that drop in the copper cup. It floats on the water as the cup fills up.

Well I worked a 24 hr shift yesterday in the weather wasn't too terrible. Wife called between 7 and 730 last night, power went out. Finally came on about 10 this morning, finally got around to turning the TV on 30 minutes ago or so and now I'm trying to decide how big of a tv do I go, as it won't turn on

That's pretty fancy! I've just got the old kind that it rains in, no moving parts.

We only had about an inch of rain here in Ponzer, at least that's what was in the gauge. But if it rains sideways, I'm not sure how accurate that is.

That is a very large spider that has been infected and zombified by a cordyceps fungus that takes control over the basically dead spider and walks its body around to infect the others.

Delete this now!

@Crankbait Where's that witchcraft bag? We need it in here!

It's the squirrel clickers you really have to watch out for.

Got everything shoehorned into the garage after I heard the forecast for possible hail/hale/hell.

This always insures that never happens.

When Hurricane Mathew came, I had two trucks, a car and the bike in the shop, they spoke of flooding so anything that was on the floor that water could damage was lifted into truck beds and on the trunk/hoods. I figured if the water rose past 3’ we had bigger issues.

I was on an island of dry dirt while water was 2-3’ deep within a mile of all directions.

Glad to see I’m not the only one that does this crap. 😂

Leading up to and immediately after Hurricane Michael in 2018 we had multiple multi day power outages due to severe storms, hurricanes, ice storms.

I bought a whole house generator.

That $12k purchase basically insured my neighbors power stayed on constantly for the next 4 years. I never got the recognition I deserved for this feat.

I remember the one in 2018. That was the one that exposed the deficiencies in the roofing of my parents, newly constructed, home. Why is the fireplace (stone) all wet? Why is the wall and ceiling all wet? Why is the drywall tape hanging down?

Turns out roof had slow leak which we didn’t know about, but the hurricane brought it to our attention by overloading it. Unfortunately, we split ways with the GC and severed warranty liability so it was on us.

Their experience with power outages and our experience last year, prompted us to get a whole house generator, despite the $12k cost.

New to NC and living in Claremont but FOR ME this was a nothing burger. Yeah, a lot of rain and I had some streams flowing over the property but had really no sense of the wind. Maybe because the dense trees surrounding the property acted as a great windbreak.

We got 8"-9" of snow Monday night into Tuesday, with 2"-4" more expected tonight. Highs dropping to single digits or less by Saturday, with lows below zero & more snow called for on Sunday. BBBRRR.

I'll almost feel bad for everyone freezing their body parts off at the playoff game at Arrowhead Saturday night, as I watch it on my 75" tv from the comfort of my couch 😆

Growing up east of Cleveland, OH, I was taught that IS football. Common to see fans out there shirtless in sub freezing weather.
