I hope this is the correct forum. Please move it if not.

I took a CHP class yesterday and passed, so I tried to apply online yesterday evening. The online process asks you to choose an "appointment" date, and the next available one is not until July. Is the appointment to "start" the application process (background checks, etc.), or is it for for picking up the permit, get fingerprinted, etc?

If I recall correctly, during your appt you’ll submit your package and get fingerprinted and start the next big long waiting period.

@ZillaG I don’t have a recent experience but that’s the start of the process before another long wait.

OMFG. I hear the wait to actually get the permit, once the process starts, is 90 days. So it may not be 'til October to get my permit? Damn!

Yea, it’s stupid.

That CHP training cert would be good for a VA non resident permit and that process would take about three months after you mail in the package. It would have you carrying concealed by April instead of Oct.

i thought the sheriff has a fixed time period (60ish days) from receipt of application and mental health records by law...

I applied in July 20, appt with Sheriff Aug 20, approved December 20, received in mail Jan 21. Mecklenburg.

This. You’ll likely be looking at 9-12 months for your NC permit. You won’t be able to purchase, without a PPP which is faster, but if that’s a non issue get a nonresident permit for another state and you’ll be legal to carry because NC recognizes all other permits.

Good idea. Any experience on which state processes the fastest, in addition to Virginia? I already have handguns, but want to buy more without applying for each one.

As I said, Virginia is very straightforward and should be about 3 months.

This will show reciprocity.

Damn per https://www.vsp.virginia.gov/Firearms_NonresidentConcealed.shtm#NonresPermitApp, it's 5-6 months now, still faster than NC.

best I can read, the times for “processing” are back to normal or within the 14 day period. What is missing is the wait time for an appointment to get your credentials in order and started.

DW did it a few years ago (CCW) and it was quick... it there was an election... Interestingly, there was an well known and esteemed (D registration) attorney who tried to cut in line so he would not mess up his afternoon court session. He was hooted and booed. MOST of the applicants were of color as in AA or Hispanic. They did not take kindly to him cutting in and THEN a complaining when the clerk told him he had not followed the application protocols.

Guess I find out in Dec when my CCW expires.

BTW....Sheriff Baker will issue or has issued over 50K PPP this year....only a THREE Fold increase. FG&P says it’s firearms sales are up 300%. One has to wonder if, since Wake was equally split in the last presidential election, how many of the folks wanting to purchase, and maybe legally TOTE were of the opposite party as the Sheriff....who said that the Dixie G&K a show this weekend was suspicious....and ill timed. Guess the organizers who have signed the contracts since the 70’s or 80’s per the NC DOA planned the MAGA event this weekend....that far in advance....

If you want a laugh....

So, IF i die or expire within 30 days, the Sheriff will NOT issue my permit or renewal....how shocking...

FYI... you CAN'T purchase on a nonresident permit. You CAN purchase, in the mean time, with a Pistol Purchase Permit. 1 permit allows you to buy 1 handgun. You must surrender 1 permit to the ffl per handgun purchased. The PPP can be had from your local sheriff. They're $5 each, I think, and are good for several years. You can request multiple permits from the sheriff at one time. I would still pursue getting your CHP in the mean time.

Wonder how backed up WCSO is on PPP appointments?

I'm in Wake and my CHP is up for renewal in July - bad timing this year 😕 . I may line up some PPP to bridge the gap, although there's not much I need at these prices. I just hate the thought of getting jerked around for some political wankers that just wanna play Jabba the Hut parlor games.

If I recall PPP are good for 5 years ?

I think you are correct... been too many years since I went that route. Reupped my CHP last year. Burke County took less than 60 days for renewal, but i started 90 days before it was dead. Got my new one before the old one died in July.

All fives.
Pistol Purchase Permits are good for 5 years from the date issued and can be purchased up to 5 at a time, and are $5 each.

If you start the renewal process before it expires your current CHP will be valid until the new one arrives. At least for carrying. For purchasing, it might cause issues. And this year, I'd definitely start early.

1st are you a resident of NC? If so a VA non resident will not work in NC.
2nd 90 days starts from when you go in for appt.
3rd They will not take you without an appt. (Wake)
4 th a PP to purchase will take you about 5 days or less. Then you can buy and OC as stated above. But you will have a little more restrictions on where you can carry.
5th If you are military and are stationed here in NC. Your home state CC will work and a non resident will work if your home state accepts it. But you will have to follow NC laws!

Hope this clears things up

This is correct.

5 weeks ago my brother got his in 5 days. The appt. For CC was March and that was in Nov. Now I think they are in July. Which if the case Sept is about when you will get approved.

Not if you are a resident of NC. That is what DOJ. Told me when I called them.
For example:
Florida accepts SC and NC permits
I had a non Resident SC CC and at the time I was a NC resident and had NC CC. If I was stop in NC my SC non resident in NC is useless. It is also useless in Florida. Because I was a Resident in NC I would have to use NC CC in Florida and NC. There is a lot of confusion on Non resident CC.

interesting

the statute on NC reciprocity does not mention residence of the permit holder. it plainly states the permit is honored.

interesting question. did the person at the doj write this down including statutes or was it a phone call. not questioning that someone said it, but i do think they could have been wrong (answering off the cuff rather than in the context of trying to prosecute a case).

Any time this comes up or any question comes up. I call the DOJ. I,am going to call today again and see if I get the same answer

They might be.....but I tend to go on the safe side. I am not a lawyer, I am going go with DOJ.
I've talked with numerous "officials" who don't have it right. The person on the other end of the phone isn't a lawyer. I can't blame them really, there are so many different things to remember.

A friend of mine took his CHP class in November 2019 and couldn't get an appointment to get fingerprinted and submit his application until Feb, 2021. That's here in Mecklenburg.

if you can, get them to give you the statute that says an NC resident can not use a non-resident permit from a different state.

appreciate you calling
