I was at the store today really looked around and it got me thinking... Out of the commercially available kinds of pickles what do yall like?

What brand? Mount Olive, Heinz, Clausens etc?

What flavor? Kosher dill, dill, sweet, bread and butter etc?

What cut? spears, chips, large whole, medium hole, gurkins?

Anyone find any specialty brands that are worth a try?

I personally prefer the Mount Olive, Kosher Dill, in the medium whole packing.

PS maybe I should have saved this for FridayNF???

We like the Vlasic Zesty spears first and foremost, but will buy the Mt Olive Zesty Garlic spears, too.
You know...whichever one is on sale and we grab four or five at a time lol.

Actually picked up a jar of the M/O Zesty Garlic today for something different to try. I was expecting a bit more zing but they were warm. I'll see how they are after they cool down. M/O pickles seem to become more intense when fridge temp to me.

After I got a call from a friend that needed help diagnosing an electrical issue on a brine heater, there will NEVER be a mount olive pickle eaten by me.

Usually vlassic plain dill spears here

Agree tbe M.O. pickles are a but lacking, thats why we like the Vlasics first. They got a little pop to em lol.

My Grandma’s grape-leaf pickles were the bomb. But she’s been gone for nearly 30 years.

Lately, I really enjoy the Vlasic half dill pickles.

Wickles Wicked Pickles. If you like a little heat and pickles, give these a try.

These. Right. Here.

Pickled Eggs!!!!!!!!
I decided to dip my toe in the water. Just put these up a few days ago, first batch ever. I'm waiting until 9/16 to try them out and see how I want to tweak the recipes.

My grandma made them. She’d color the eggs (think Easter) before brining ‘em. As I recall, they had to sit quite a long time to develop the right flavor.

Happy memory.

Sorry, distracted by the other pickling topics. Let's get this back on track...

Mt Olive
Kosher Dill
Whole in the big jar

Polish Dills are up there as well. Very similar to Kosher, but more pickling spice. Typically have a little more zest to them.

I prefer my own homemade pickles. Make a few different types, but I have a recipe from my grandfather called "Million Dollar Pickles" which is one of my favorites. They are a bread and butter type pickle. Recipe has green pepper and onion slices as well as the pickle chips and includes turmeric.

I must try these, right up my alley.
Are they available locally?

If I eat pickles now days it is usually the Vlasic dill spears.

I haven't eaten a lot of pickles since my grandma passed, since that is what I was raised on. She would can between 100-200 gallons of pickles a year. When we were small kids, we were tasked with placing the cucumbers in the half gallon and gallon jars since our small hands would fit through the neck. She took a jar of pickles to every church function and any other kind of dinner that she went too and very rarely brought any home. She used apple cider vinegar and sack salt, both of which she said later on were not as good as they used to be, and dill and garlic that she raised. Once in a while, she would use grape leaves unless the Japanese beetles had eaten the leaves up.

I'll never forget the sight of all those pickle jars stacked on shelves out in the wash house after she got them finished. Years and years ago, Coke syrup was shipped in gallon glass jars, 4/box, and my uncle worked for Coke and brought her several hundred of the jars. After she passed, we cleaned out the loft of the wash house and there were still boxes of the syrup jars that she never used.

I haven't had to buy any yet, one of my colleagues keeps bringing them over, and he travels the entire SE. I think he gets them from Publix. Please let me know if you find any locally.

Fair warning, they're about $5-6 a jar - can - bucket - whatever that thing is. But ooooh so worth it. If you snag some save the brine for a chicken marinate or drop some hard-boiled eggs in it & refrigerate for a couple of weeks.

Only pickles I want are Mt. Olive. Tried vlassics, etc. To me, those just taste like cucumbers with a light sprinkle of vinegar. A pickle should taste like a pickle.

I think the spears have the best flavor. Shame you can't get them in the 1 gallon jars. Lately I've been having a hard time finding the spears in the store, so I've been buying the 1 gallon whole dills. They're good, but not quite the same.

No need for you to try the Grillos then, they're very crisp & ... "cucumbery?"

YES!

A year or so ago a coworker in MI helped us out greatly. I found out he liked pickles. I sent him a giant jar of Mt Olives. He told me he never heard of them.... They were amazing! I told him to let me know if he wanted any more.

They don't sell Mt. Olive Pickles in MI ?? You can't get a good biscuit there either. Something is wrong up there....

Pickled okra > pickled cucumbers

My mom puts up about 60 jars of pickled okra per year. My wife eats most of those jars.

She'll pair them with anything

Hot dogs? Pickled okra
Bagel? Pickled okra
Watermelon? Pickled okra
Grilled Cheese? Pickled okra
Chinese? Pickled okra
Symphony Bar? Pickled okra

I usually just put them in a Bloody Mary.

The best use of the gallon Mt. Olive pickle jar? We were at a kid's b-day party I didnt want to be at. I noticed the jar in the fridge only had the juice, I waited for a 2lt Mt. Dew bottle to get emptied, filled it with the pickle juice and waited.
It was friggin' hilarious. I grabbed each person right away to wait for the next victim, it worked.
Any pickle as long as it isn’t sweet. Sweet pickles are the debil.

I actually get pissed when there are pickles out and I take one and it’s sweet. Gross.
And that sweet pickle 🤢 slaw will ruin a sammich!

From the store Claussen Dill Pickles are my go to.

If I want to get fancy I order from here. https://www.pickleguys.com/ The are in NYC on the lower east side. In their shop they have barrels full of every kind of pickled items.

My wife makes a 21 day sweet pickle that is great. Doesn't compare to any store bought sweet pickle.

She also does dill pickled green beans that are great also.

Bread n butter too.

We eat just about anything pickled, except beets. My mother loves them, but I can't stand them.
