Rock 57

I got to fondle the S&W M&P 5.7 the other day. The rotating barrel on it is neat.
How did you like it. What did you not like about it?

BLEM 10 mag deal is back up... I've been waiting for the deal for the optics ready threaded barrel one but its hard not to pull the trigger.

Friday edit - optics ready deal back up. I'm in for one.

I know I’ve seen a thread on this before but I can’t seem to locate it and the search function is no help. What’s the consensus on these? Are they worth it, reliable? They have a sale going on right now that makes them very tempting to me.

I bought one from a member here. Put a Sentinel RDS on it. Amazing pistol, and for the price point it is, not a better value exists for that caliber. It fits kydex made for the Ruger 57 perfectly, and fits leather for a Glock 17 with optics perfectly. Weight, balance, trigger….. all excellent, and an absolute giggle fest to shoot!! There’s buzz about a carbine that uses the same magazine. I will definitely be buying one!!

I’ve got about 1,000-1,200 rounds through mine, and will not hesitate to buy another when they show up in the BST.

Buy it, and if you’re not digging it, I’ll buy it from you…

I’ll even pay the shipping from AZ to NC.

That’s a pretty solid recommendation! Think I’ll go ahead and pull the trigger on one.

Break-in on mine was probably 300ish rounds. I got it unfired. It had 2-3 FTF’s in about the first 50-75 rounds. Cleaned, drop or two of oil, not a single hiccup since.

5.7x28 is definitely a fun round, albeit probably not the best choice for SHTF. I’m not even considering reloading due to the finicky nature of the round.
I’m probably gonna carry it this fall/winter when light jacket and flannel season comes around.

Accuracy is pretty good too. I zeroed the dot at 25 yards, and with very little holdover, I’m consistently hitting a 2/3 silhouette I have hanging up at 120 yards.

I just want it to play around with in the desert. Probably won’t be something I carry or shoot that much but just looking for a fun toy.

Mine will not cycle with any suppressor or ammo combination. PSA refused to service it despite the model coming with suppressor height sights and a threaded barrel. It was the last straw for me in terms of PSA quality. I know others have had wonderful experiences…not so much for me.

Not sure why that typed out in bold…

Well, I slacked off on the sale and the slide I wanted is OOS. But I just went ahead and orders the frame, a mag and 300 rounds.

No optic cut. There's your excuse.
…except I don’t run an optic on any pistol I really shoot.

I do have one on this one, which doesn’t get much use because it’s just stupid:

And I have one on this that’s only been shot once with it installed:

Nothing else on any of my normal pistols.

I may have just run out of excuses of why I don’t have 5.7 pistol.

Already OOS.

Funny I thought this thread was a cool coincidense as I’m picking up a rock 5.7 Friday. And then in saw your link. 🤣

I’m on the hook for more than that but this one has the optic cut slide.

Any 5.7 shooters tried this stuff? That’s as low of a price as I’ve seen on that round in awhile, but I’ve never used this.

Not yet, but I have 2 boxes of it. Just waiting on my slide to get here then I’ll try it out

Guess You are gonna have to buy it then :)
Done. 🙄

I looked further and found one color of the threaded barrel/suppressor height sights variant for only $20 more ($320 instead of $300…where most colors were $350). Already have a YHM Phantom 22 sitting here without a host. Only 4oz and rated for the caliber.

A quick question for anybody that’s bought a Rock 57…what’s the soft case like? Curious how many mags it’s set up to hold?

put some rounds through it this evening, and it ate all 150 with no problem. It was very smoky though, although I’m sure this looked worse that it actually was to me because I was shooting at night with my light bar on the SxS lighting up my target area.

I’m gonna put some more though it today and I’m sure I’ll end up ordering a couple more boxes of the stuff. Also going to put my Oculus and Obsidian on it to see it I can get it to run suppressed.

I hope it works in at least one of my three hosts…cause I bought 750 rounds of it. 🤣

Put another 150 through it today. No issues at all….until I put the can on. Once I threaded on the Oculus 22 it malfunctioned every single round. Got one mag through it just fine and thought the “suppressor malfunction” talk was just a rumor…turns out it’s not just rumor….

Sorry for your woes although glad I’m not the only one who can’t get the rock to run suppressed. I haven’t yet tried the oculus in short configuration although it doesn’t provide nearly the sound suppression. I have an aluminum TacSol ascent I may try since it’s lighter, although the aluminum baffles with. 5.7x28 may not be a good long term option.

most annoying part was PSA’s handling of my inquiry. They claimed they cannot be responsible for suppressor effects on pistol. Ok then why is it sold with suppressor sights, threaded barrel, fails on 4+ types of commercial ammo and several different industry standard rimfire suppressors.

From this I’m done w PSA. I’m also unimpressed by the rock‘s lockup system. It appears to be a direct blowback. if I end up reloading the 5.7x28 the M&P rotating barrel lock system looks like a safer path.

Meh, I’m not overly concerned about it, mainly tried the can on it out of curiosity. I mean, did you really buy the rock to be a suppressor host?? It’s not a quiet round. It’s also not a rimfire so I’m not really sure why anyone would be surprised that it’s not working with “several different industry standard rimfire suppressors”… just thinking out loud here but maybe in needs a booster to work🤔 perhaps I’ll try my obsidian in short configuration, although I think the weight of it alone would be an issue but we’ll see🤷‍♂️.

Also, I don’t think I can blame PSA for not “handling” it. I mean what are they supposed to do? How could you possibly guarantee that the gun will work with all suppressors, when there are so may variables at play there? It’s simple, you can’t. I think you would be hard pressed to find any company that would guarantee their gun will work all suppressors.

Also it’s sold with a threaded barrel, sure, but I think the term “suppressor sights” is obsolete. They really should be called “optic height sights” since that is the main purpose for them.

I’ll keep playing with it though, just to see if I can get it to run reliably. I’ll prob try the oculus in short configuration next to see if that has any effect. Definitely won’t be quiet though.

If it’s rated for it, it shouldn’t be a problem.

The only dedicated 5.7 cans I know about (Gemtech SFN-57 & SAR-57) had aluminum baffles. I believe they only had three, and they were all different designs. Somebody else is making those cans under a different name now IIRC. Probably whoever it was that actually made the Gemtech cans.

GSL is who is making them. I think @amnesia has at least one of them?

I have them both and they work great.

Ordered a holster for it. Saw these guys on the PSA forum.

I don’t remember if you posted this in another thread and I commented…or I saw it here and never relied.

Either way, let me know how this works out. I like the idea of 47 rounds on me with a spare mag, so I need a holster. I can always send a mag to @RR and have him make a horizontal carrier. Or maybe I ride up there one day and have him make a holster and mag carrier. 🤔

Got the holster last week and so far I like it a lot. Shipping was very fast, ordered Sunday, and arrived on Wednesday.
