CONCORD, N.C. — Police are on scene investigating a shooting at the Concord Mills Mall.

The shooting happened just before 9 p.m
Authorities said it is not an active shooter situation, but officers are working to clear the area and start an investigation.

The Cabarrus County sheriff told Channel 9′s Allison Latos early indications are multiple people have been shot. Concord EMS said two people have been taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Curious to hear more about this as details are released. I’m nearby the mall and in that area frequently.

It sounds like CM is giving North Lake a run for their money on annual shootings.

I'm friends with a guy on Facebook former Leo. He said he and his family was there a several fights had broken out and he grabbed them to leave. Shooting happened just a few minutes later. So most likely gang related.

Stay out of malls, they are gang territory. I remember a captain with the Guilford Co sheriff saying stay out of a Four Seasons, which used to be high end retail. He said if you want to see rival gangs signing each other, go hang out at the food court there, but he doesn’t advise you do it.

I don’t remember the last time I was in a shopping mall and have no reason for, or interest in, doing so again. I remember visiting a large mall in downtown Manila, almost 20 years ago. At the entrances were shotgun toting guards and metal detectors. Probably time for us to learn something from them.

A certain Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Firearms Instructor passes along some very good advice regarding that mall and what to expect and certain nights. It has held true through the years and this incident proves him true, yet again.

His initials wouldn't be A.E. would it? If so, that's who I took my CCP class with.

On the shooting, I took my dogs out last night about the 9 o'clockish time, and heard a lot of sirens. Must have been the reason. I live right behind the speedway, and stay the hell away from that place. A lot goes on over that way at night, and none of it good.

All their doors (the mall) are covered with no guns signs. Funny how their signs don't stop bad people. If you don't carry there ur crazy IMO. I have found the safest place to park is Bass Pro. 1/3 of the people who shop there probably have a gun.

No surprise, it was Saturday night. Saturday night is a different time at the mall and even the sheriff's department personnel advise not going on Saturday night.

If an LEO agency is advising people to stay away from a shopping mall, they have a serious problem of negligence of public safety. How can we trust the police, when they can't clean up a public shopping mall.

Dont forget to blame the courts too - law enforcement can only be so successful if they bust someone and criminals get dismissed or plea down repeatedly.

Police only have enough manpower to go where they are called to. Stationing some one there "just in case" would be effectively taking the officer(s) out of service for the whole shift.

The mall has 6-8+ off duty officers on Friday and Saturday nights. The few times I've been there at night they have it packed pairs that walk the mall. But even 10 officers can't control a gang fight.

Plus, didn't this happen in the parking lot?

The sheriff's office was not advising people to stay away. It was the off duty deputies that work the mall at night that I know, that will tell you that Saturday night you do not want to be at the mall. There is no way that the deputies nor the CPD can "clean up a public shopping mall" and I don't see that it is there responsibility, it should be the mall owners. The LEO are probably out numbered 100:1.

The mall is the ones that pay for those off duty officers. So they are trying, it's just not possible to stop it all.

do those signs hold any weight of law in N.C.?

they did not in last state I lived in, not that it would alter my decisions at all. Just curious as to the extent I need to be concerned about printing, if one were to disregard.

There are no signage specifications in NC, other than conspicuously posted.

Why would you even go into a place that's posted?? The signs they put up are telling you they don't want you in there. Plenty of other places that are not posted to spend money at.

Yes. They are legal notification. You can be trespassed if they find out u r carrying. That’s all I know there is probably more to it.

Exactly. They constantly have off duty officers, on duty patrol it regularly but police can’t be everywhere at all times. This is why we are responsible for our own safety and that includes situational awareness.

Before everyone starts calling for more police there, we also have to be cognizant of the fact that this is private property and as such the property owner has the responsibility for ensuring safety there. That burden should not fall to tax payers. On the other hand, I’m sure the Concord Mills area is a HUGE revenue generator for the city and as such warrants resources being dedicated to it to prevent it from disappearing.

I expect our rights will disappear long before the drug dealer sanctuary.

There is a police substation in the mall, which means there is a good probability of one or more officers being there at nearly any time (watch commander, shift sergeant, officers doing paperwork, etc).

I went to a mall back in the mid 90's.
You must be confused. The first enclosed mall didn’t open until 60 years later, in 1956. ;)

Oh, didn’t know that, but sounds reasonable. Maybe they need to re-evaluate their policing style and tactics at the mall.
