I like 9mms. I particularly like the small, reliable, high capacity guns that shoot them. Some years back I asked a group a question and they looked at me like I had 2 heads. The question was....How is it that any 9mm anything is a death ray but the 100+ year old 38 Special shooting comparable weight and speed projectiles is "useless" for self defense? Again, I think the capability of shooting Lotsa bullets sometimes overtakes our reasoning. A 147 at 900 FPS at .355 is a lightning bolt..A 147+- at 900 FPS at .357 is useless?? Again, I really like the little high cap guns that we all carry but after thinking about it I never felt undergunned with a 5 or 6 shot 38 Special either. Again, Placement and Penetration in pitiful handgun platforms is The deciding factor.
Think I'll carry that old S&W Model 12 tomorrow.....yep....think I will...………………..
Im not familiar with any trend claiming 38 is “useless”. I think it’s fallen out of favor because of substantially modernized designs that are chambered in other calibers, namely 9mm.
Smaller, lighter guns with much greater modularity and 3x the ammo capacity seems like a no brainer to me. Add zero trade off into the equation and the only rational reason to carry 38 would be pure preference, not metrics.
Maybe there’s also the growing fascination with firearms made from petroleum.I agree with this... .38 is just as effective as it has always been...but you can get a 10+ round 9mm in the same sized package as a .38 pocket rocket. So it isn’t the caliber as much as the system to deliver it that is making the .38 fall out of fashion.

and peopleheavier bullets are slower, and will have longer dwell time in the barrel
Remember...we don't shoot center mass because it's Good, we shoot it because it's Big.....Clint Smith. If you are on the receiving end of one or more of my bullets that hit you in center mass shots you will not know the difference between a hollow point or a fmj rounds
All the hype about majic tipped bullets is just that . If you are on the receiving end of one or more of my bullets that hit you in center mass shots you will not know the difference between a hollow point or a fmj rounds .why you ask?. Because dead people can't ask you a damn thing
This could be a ,9mm,38 special, 40 S&W or 45acp, makes no difference.you will still be DRT.
We trained 2 in chest and one in the head.Remember...we don't shoot center mass because it's Good, we shoot it because it's Big.....Clint Smith
Way better than not training...………….We trained 2 in chest and one in the head.
That's why you have those little targets on the wizardRemember...we don't shoot center mass because it's Good, we shoot it because it's Big.....Clint Smith

My off duty pistol is loaded with Winchester 147 grain HSTammo because the department furnishes I'm not a big game Hunter like yourself. All my hunting has been done with a 22LR. That was shooting rabbits and squirrels in my younger years. I have not had the chance or time to hunt big game because I work all the time.Wrong Question. The point is not that one or the other will accomplish the mission, of course both will do so. The question is, how quick will this occur? Absolute, indisputable fact, that the more trauma inflicted, the faster the debilitation will be. Also well known fact, in my world is was not good to let lions and elephants have too much time on their hands, they might decide to turn on you! I don't see it being different under any other circumstances one might run across.
DRT? That is a huge statement. In my world, caliber makes all the difference "in the world". Larger caliber, more trauma inflicted. Combine that with "magic" bullets, and things improve. And yes, there is no BS Hype to what I have said, I have seen it work, and have been involved in the design, nothing magic about it, proper design and destruction of medium! I have put bullet to tissue, and I have seen its effect on tissue. I have seen the effect of FMJ Round Nose on tissue, and the "so called magic" bullets, and there is a very big difference in both reaction, and destruction. So load me up with "Magic Bullets" thank you very much.....................
