Star Wars The Last Jedi

Anyone seen it yet? Good bad?? Im hoping to go Monday to see it.
Heads-up...I wouldn't consider anything I write below to be a spoiler. No details included, just generalities.

Really liked it. I'll regurgitate some of the opinions of my wife, as she's the huge Star Wars fan in our family.

It stayed true to the story, the Skywalker Saga, that's run through the first 7 movies. What she really likes about the most recent three is it's very clear they've been made by people that love Star Wars.

This movie has several "wait...what? moments". Well kept secrets as far as I'm concerned. There were (and usually are in sci-fi/fantasy movies) a couple things that are just dumb, but it doesn't take away from the big picture.

I will say that this one is a little "funnier" than some of the others, so be warned. It may catch you off guard a bit, like the most recent Thor movie. I loved it for that reason, but it took my wife a bit to adjust to it (both SWTLJ and Thor). There would be some very serious-seeming scene, and the next line of dialogue would just be absurd.

Visually, it's stunning...just like Force Awakens and Rogue One.

There are definitely some surprises.

We also really liked The Force Awakens, for most of the same reasons. You can't go into them with expectations of what will/should happen.

Resized952017121595183601.jpg I was really getting frustrated for first half. Second half redeemed it. I wont spoil but i liked some of the twists

The folks dressed as chars from movie in lobby were awesome

No spoilers, but I really enjoyed the movie. Could parts have been better?

Sure.

But it blew The Force Awakens out of the water. I highly recommend it.

I went in expecting Disney to destroy my childhood.

Instead, they've given it a bit more life.

It's a Porg. And the source of one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie!

Took my daughter to see it tonight, and all in all I was very happy with it. I think there was probably about 30 minutes or so that could have been shaved off.

The scene mentioned above, with the porg, was hilarious but I kinda found it pointless. It added some chuckles, and their inclusion throughout was cute, but also kinda distracting from the main themes.

We left as credits started to roll. Was there any reason to stick around like with the Marvel movies?
Nope. Nothing but that one screen shot about 2 min into the credits.

We went and saw it last night. My wife, son, brother-in-law, and his oldest boy. From what I could tell from the ride home, we all enjoyed it. I did.

So this one isn't a shameless remake of The Empire Strikes Back?

No, not really. There is some “join thin dark!” “No join the light!” Stuff. And some close call escapes and stuff, but it isn’t nearly the carbon copy that Force Awakens was.

I liked it but as a person that has been reading the books and comics sense I was 8 I didn't like how they ended it. Too simple without spoiling it for anyone. I think they did Luke wrong. I did love the graphics, and the little freaky critters! Lol

A lot less fan service in this one. I had a self deprecating sense of humor in it. It fits nicely as the 2nd installment of a "new" Trilogy. It is somewhat reminiscent of Empire but not nearly as dark. As a side note I consider Empire to be the best of the Star Wars movie even after seeing The Last Jedi Today.

The Last Jedi is a very good if not excellent film. Saw it on an IMAX screen and it was impressive. Visually amazing. As others have pointed out there is some pork and they could have shaved 15-20 minutes IMHO but it was not fatiguing.

You must have watched a different movie than I did.

Same tired plot points rehashed in an even less believable story

I am ever so glad I did not pay to see it

Maybe our expectations were different. I do not expect anyone to ever make a movie as good as the New Hope and Empire. I didn't go in thinking it would be. I fully assumed that it would follow the arch of Empire which it did. The writers and directors are themselves fans of the originals. It would be almost impossible to break out of that mold with this Sequel Trilogy. For good or for bad they are stuck in the Skywalker Universe.

The real test will be when they start the next Trilogy without the Skywalkers but honestly I do not believe that they will be ground breaking either. That at least for me it does not mean that these movies are not entertaining.

I can understand that people might not like it. Back in the day lots of movie goers and critics hated Empire. 27 years later people forget that. It took years for people to come to appreciate Empire the way they do now.

I liked the new one better than the Prequels, and better than Return of the Jedi. If I was ranking them my list would be Empire, Star Wars, The Last Jedi and then The Force Awakens. YMMV

So much original material out there (thrawn) that they could have either used or drawn from and they decided to basically copy the originals (very poorly) instead.

I agree with you to an extent but they are constrained by the Skywaker story line. With everyone but Kylo gone maybe they can step further outside it.

Also...the cycle of light, fall, dark, rise, light, fall...is kinda just part of the story.

Even Lukes "sacrifice" was a poor rendition of obi-wans--like a fart in the wind

Really in many ways it was identical. Trying not to get into spoilers.

We just got back from watching it in IMAX 3D
And once again, effing wow 3D nowadays is sooo awesome.

As for the story we all really liked it. My wife and I talked about it a little after and we agreed that what they have done is made a very graceful transition to what will, for all intents, be Star Wars the next generation.

They started in the last episode by bringing in a new protagonist but backed up by caste and characters we all grew up with. By the end of this episode the only original caste that’s still alive is Leia, Chewbacca, C3po and R2D2.

$5 says the opening of the next episode will be the burial scene for Admiral Leia.

So we have a new Luke, a new Han, a new Darth and a new R2 characters. Chewbacca will still be there as a supporting character and we still have other supporting characters that are interesting.

Star Wars the next generation
I’m betting there have been major ragging nerd fights over statements like this.

I liked the movie, from an average fan’s perspective. I love the creativity and the good guys vs. bad guys storylines of Star Wars. I’m anxiously awaiting the moment when my boys figure out the whole Anakin to Darth Vader storyline and how/why he changed (uncontrollable emotions/anger) and pretty much destroyed a good bit of the galaxy. Hope it hits them right between the eyes.

As for this movie, I was thoroughly entertained and not annoyed with any obvious reache of Disney to make good on its $4B investment (which I had radar on full search mode for). I braced for impact with the feminist chain wimp taking charge after Leia’s injury—at least she made up for her poor leadership with an admirable act! I was also bracing for the bomber girl and mechanic to be lesbians connected by a necklace, but thankfully they stayed away from that too!

Call me curmudgeonist, but I was just looking for unfettered-with good ol’ Star Wars action..and I got it. This one has to be close to the record for space battle sequences in terms of time. Those battle scenes were fun to watch. Poe Dameron is a bad ass.

And who the hell let the Sicario guy fly spaceships! That bastard!
