I guess this could have been posted in other locations and it may have been covered before, but for those with firearms doing HD duty, specifically pistols and maybe suppressed, where do you keep them when you're not home?

I have a G19 in my nightstand and it stays there when I'm at work. My suppressor is in the safe, but I want to put it on my nightstand gun.

For the ones in here that have a situation or set up like this, do you move the gun to the safe when you leave the house and take it out when you're back (which could apply to a non-suppressed gun, too)? Or does it stay in the nightstand or is your HD gun also your EDC or what?

My shotty and hd pistol stay right where they are when I leave. EDC goes with.
If someone breaks in and steals them, thats on the thief, not me.

While I love the idea of keeping a suppressed 9mm as my nightstand gun, I like the piece of mind of using my Vaultek quick access safe more. Neither my FS 9 nor CZ Scorpion fit in my Vaultek VT20 with a can, so the suppressors stay in the safe. If Vaultek finally releases a carbine safe that can be mounted under my bed or in my closet, I'll make my CZ Scorpion my suppressed HD gun.

You just reminded me of my TAC-14 under the bed. Lol...

I had never heard of that brand. Those safes are nice!

Lmao...I hate it when I forget where I put one. Recenty 'rediscovered' a .380 I had stashed in the shed near the workbench

Yeah. It hasn't been too long ago that I found a Magpul edition M&P 15-22 hidden under a concrete step to another room.

I need a bigger safe.

While this obviously won't help with a suppressed G19 (will not fit w/suppressor attached) we have 3 of these in our home in various rooms, each with a G19 pistol and a G17 back up mag in them. If it were not for our 7 year old son I would simply leave HD weapons lying around the joint in strategic spots like @draco88 mentioned.

They work well and are quick to access via biometrics (or code or key if need be).

G22 w/ Osprey 40 is always nearby. Considering keeping the Maxim 9 in a different location once it's approved.

Now trying to figure out how/where to store the 9mm suppressed AR once it proves itself with some HST on the next range trip.

I don't carry the G22 anywhere. Considering adding the Maxim to my carry rotation, but haven't tested it in a holster. 9mm AR occasionally goes out in the truck with me. Also considering putting the Octane 45K (whenever it shows up) on the G21 to have handy.

Based on published measurements, the Maxim 9 should fit in there. Hmmmm....

Now a question for suppressor users ...

If you use a suppressor to defend you and your family in your home would you leave it on the firearm or remove it and put on a thread protector? Why or why not?

Leave it on.
It's legally owned supressor used in a legal shoot.

Edited to add: Its when you go tryin to hide stuff or change the scene that bad things can happen to you.

I like my hornady rapid ar wall safe. I’d think it would work with your 9 mm ar too.

Because of my experience (and I'll explain in a PM if you're more curious), I would definitely remove the supressor and put it in the safe in the time between discharging the firearm and letting LEO in the house.

Yeah, couldn't remember the name...but was just looking at that exact one after I figured out what it was called.

I've thought about it multiple times, but have yet to make a final decision.

On one hand, I'd hate to lose one or have it damaged...but on the other I have spares so it's not a case of I'd miss it while it was locked up.

I also wouldn't lie about it if asked. Just not anything I'd voluntarily give up (the fact it had a can on it at the time). No different than removing a sling or a light. The can doesn't have rifling so you're not screwing with any ballistic testing they may attempt.

If I thought about it, I'd probably remove it and stick it in a drawer...as I'd rather not open my safe in their presence to retrieve it. But if they made it to my house before it crossed my mind, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Sorry to be late to the party but, what's the advantage of using a suppressed pistol for HD? Isn't the objective having a gun that's as light, easy to grab and shoot as possible?

Squeeze off a round or three in your bedroom unsupressed and get back to us lol.
The noise of multiple gunshots confined in a room like that will affect the shooter. In the case of potential multiple attackers, I dont want even one second of disorientation on my part.

Same reason you use ear protection at the range. Heck, I still wear plugs when shooting suppressed.

Also cuts down on the flash and temporary being blind. :p

In your case, having multiples, I can see it being no biggie. For me, not so much.

I need to go find a video I watched recently that said the opposite. I've watched several the guy has done and I can't say I'm a fan...mainly just think he comes across as a DB.

I have never fired supressed in a house, so it's really theory on my part.
I have fired unsupressed 5.56 in a house and it sucks.
I might just do like the guys in the vid a couple posts up and check it out for myself. Shoot out a window or something lol

I've shot my suppressed RAR out the back door while standing in the kitchen...but I really hope that's not the firearm I'm forced to use in a home defense scenario.

Disincentivization?

If I could stay home instead of leaving to go to work everyday, I wouldn't have created this thread. Lol...

Well, we know the smoke alarm works.

@BigWaylon guy in the vid you posted brings up a couple of points that I disagree with.

1. psychological disabling of enemy
While this is a valid point, and can work in your favor, not all of us can function through that. The vid guy, and myself, have lived through this in a warzone and know exactly what to expect. The average homeowner does not. And will also be affected.
It will also affect my backup---the wife. She's never been in a situation like that and it will affect her carrying out her assignment. Disabling the enemy is great, but what if it doesn't work on them? I dont want my backup out of the fight.

2. home defense plan/communication
'No plan survives first contact'
What if the enemy takes a diffetent route through the house than the one anticipated? What if they split and come two ways?
I would really love to be able to communicate with my backup and adjust fire, pun intended, on the fly.

There's not really any right or wrong here other than survive.

As far as psychological, what could be more terrifying than hearing pew pew followed by the sound of empty brass bouncing off of the hardwood floors (Sorry, carpet guys)? I'm sure even bad guys watch movies.

Concerning your own hearing, last year was the first I had hunted suppressed. I shot a heavy six point buck. That was my first deer using a suppressed rifle. After the shot, the deer jumped behind the briars to escape. From the moment he left, I could hear him wheezing as he ran. I had never heard that during any rifle hunt. Usually, the blast of a unsuppressed rifle and supersonic load deafened me temporarily. This time, I knew it was a good shot by the sounds.

My HD pistol, suppressed p226, lives in a drawer except when I take it out for exercise or cleaning. If I leave town for more than a few days it goes in a safe.

Wife has a revolver, she may or may not remember to pick it up before running blindly into the den, she’ll almost certainly never actually use it. We have had one break in while we were asleep, I learned a lot about who will do what.

Is that p226 chambered in 38 Super? :p

I am a big fan of John Lovell he makes a lot of sense to me. That video did weigh in on my decision for a suppressor for my HD AR. I wanted something that wasn't going to add a bunch of length and weight to my AR and I only wanted to take the bark off of my rifle. So as I looked around I decided on the Sandman-k. Yes I know its not hearing safe but it should reduce the flash signature and take enough decibels off that hopefully it won't totally overwhelm me when / if I ever need to fire my rifle in my house. As for taking it off after a use I don't plan to do that. Mostly because I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to hide something. Now I just have to wait for my stamp to come back on the K.

Like who? Your family? The perp you just shot?

I purposely hid stuff because I had a suspicion that LEO would take anything firearm related into evidence, and they did. I don't doubt that had I not hid these items, they would have taken them, too. Those were my possessions and I didn't want them languishing on a shelf at the Sheriff's complex.

I saw that warrior poet video also a few weeks ago. I think the concept of not wanting the can so neighbors will hear the gun fight is....odd. I want the suppressors to aid ME in the fight. Reduced concussion from my 10.5” barrel, reduced/eliminated muzzle flash etc.

I live in an area where gunshots are common and will arouse exactly zero suspicion with whoever hears it. They might think I’m a jerk for firing several mags at whatever hour of the night but that’s about it....if they even realize where it came from

I don’t want the SD detective whose looking for any reason to hang someone to advance his career to think I’m hiding anything if I have to use deadly force
