Ok all y’all that ain’t from ‘round here…Yankees, Cheeseheads, flatlanders, midwesterners….

What does the SOUTH get RIGHT?! Note, we are in the “Cooking Channel”, not Politics or Tortuga!

Let’s just go ahead and all agree that BBQ is top of the list. Western, Vinegar, mustard…it’s all good.

What food have you come to appreciate as much as your Coney Dog (Flint > Detroit!), Broccoli and Cheese soup, lobst-ah rolls and Stromboli?

For me it’s…
- Shrimp n Grits
- Fried Okra
and
- Low Country boil

I’m 100% Southern, but you’re speaking my language, right there.

We have a couple Italian joints here in Clemmons and their Stromboli is at the top of my list.

BBQ shrimp and grits is the bomb.

I also appreciate the variety of southern BBQ, and do that without taking anything away from the variety of pork ribs in the midwest or the sliced pork just to the north of us. I’m a poor judge, the only BBQ that I rate low is mutton and that comes from KY.

I’ve never had fried flounder other than near the coast of nc/sc, and it’s consistently good in Charleston.

Anytime I mention a good Eyetallian restaurant to a Resident Northener they always say...Not Toooo bad, BUT Nothing like Back Home!!!

You know. Billy. We are in “their" thread.

Be kind. They’re doing the best they can to put up with us.

Bless their hearts.

:D

I'll concede that every region has their own ways and specialties. I eat my hot dogs like a Mexican - chopped up with mayonnaise, hot sauce, onion, and hot peppers. I really enjoy traditional yankee style deli meat sandwiches. Greek immigrants make some of the best chili and chicken and dumplings.

Every poor people had their own way of taking cheap cuts of meat and making them delicious. From pastrami, to BBQ, to carnitas, to grinder meat, to sausage, etc. They all had their own ways of making them into amazing dishes too.

But nobody on this earth, not a single soul, can make a fried chicken taste as good as a Southerner can.

I'm from the South Carolina low country and you know I hate a yankee lib, but, that being said; they have some incredible food up north. Hard to beat cheasapeak blue crab done the Maryland way. A bagel on the street of New York is something to experience. Any sea food north of Philadelphia is just insanely good. Real New England clam chowder...

I only wish more yankees would stay up there and cook cause when they come this way the taste is soured.

When I say yankee, I only mean the wrong ones. I love the right ones.

I was just getting ready to add this to my list

I've had goulash at several outings. Seems there is always some Hungarian descended or some other squarehead person that brings it. I always proclaim "Oh, I love Hamburger Helper!" when I see it.

(I'm actually like it. I'm down with any meal that involves noodles)

Two of the best northern meals I've had - Garbage Platter and Poutine
Oh yeah. Garbage plate is the best hangover cure.

Another thing I love but don't find too often is Brunswick stew.

Real Brunswick Stew has squirrel in it. BBQ joint up the road from me does it for a few weeks every year after their season comes in.

I have to make mine special since I can't eat beans.

Slander me later, but Smithfield Chicken and Barbecue will sell you a pint, and a second one for two bucks, and it is pretty respectable.

“Pretty respectable”? Is that Southern for “not Too Bad”?

Touche. Cross thread points.

The truth is though, a) it’s a chain restaurant, but b), and the owner had a reputation for harrassing his male secretaries, so I have to be careful how I say I like their food.

2 things I will never do and always wanted to...go to Katz Deli and Sparks Steak House in The City.
Katz and Stage deli were both - in my opinion - very overrated.
