Alright folks … me and a buddy were fighting this out. I eat both red and brown hotdogs, but having grown up in NC, I would pick red hotdogs… specifically Bright Leaf / Carolina Packers. So many fun times shared while chomping down on good ol’ hot dogs. My buddy (retired vet, from NY) said he would only eat brown hot dogs (Sabrets, Nathan’s) and absolutely refuses to eat red hot dogs. So, let’s hear it… what’s your favorite… you can only pick one! And while you are at it.. share your favorite place or places to get a real guuuuud hotdog!

Brown hot dogs for me, it is all I've ever had, Nathan's ain't a bad hot dog. Last one I had was in Vegas.

I go everywhere to try out good hotdogs. If I were to take pics at each, I would have as many pics, as @fieldgrade has of BBQ joints!
I really like Cricket’s in downtown Smithfield and will drive an hour to get them…. Not to mention they have the best homemade egg rolls! Hotdogs are still $1.15 there! Line wrapped down the sidewalk! I also like Bill’s in Washington, NC. Deep fried dogs and you can only get mustard chili or onions… they don’t even sell fries! Line is out the door!

Brown or red, beef, turkey or chicken dog doesn't make much difference it's the chili slaw and bun that make a great dog
I had the dario1/4 pound dog yesterday great hotdog but the bun was over toasted and ruined it..

Shorty’s in Wake Forest, since 1916. https://shortysfamoushotdogs.com/

Definitely on the NC hot dog trail.

My MIL grew up not far away on a small farm and ate there when she was a girl during the Depression.

Jim’s Ole Time Hot Dogs used to set up in the Containment Area at Lowes. Great dogs. Red Hots, sausage dogs, brats, Nathan’s beef dogs. All good stuff. Not sure if he still does.

Shorty’s is good. I eat there often, as it is just a hop and a skip away. I always get two burnt all the way w slaw and cheese fries.. and 6 Tums! Good stuff!

Used to be a great hotdog place in Morehead City. Think the name was 4 Brothers or something similar. Just an old camper turned into a grill. Outside tables or to go orders only. But they had an awesome menu. Pretty much every regional style hotdog you could imagine. Long Island Coneys, Chicago Dogs, Southern styles, and etc. I really enjoyed eating there. Don’t know why the closed down. They were alway busy when I was in town.

We used to take the boys when they were little to the small town drug stores that still had lunch counters for hot dogs about 25 years ago.

Fuquay, Cary, Brevard to the west, trying to remember some others.

I remember getting steamed hot dogs at the Sportsman’s Pier. Nothing like the sound of the old bun steamers getting pumped three times… shhs…sshhss ….shhhssss. Then getting a dog wrapped in the worlds thinnest white paper w the chili sauce peeking though… takes me back..

The quality of the chili and slaw is definitely important when it comes to the hotdogs. But for me it’s more about how the hotdog is cooked rather than red vs brown, etc. steamed/boiled hotdogs just aren’t good.

The Roast Grill in downtown Raleigh. Tiny little joint on a side street. Been there forever. A little Greek lady ran it, lived upstairs. My wife worked with her grown grandson 30 years ago.

Raleigh politicos would line up next to trash collectors for hot dogs at lunch. No ketchup/catsup/catch-up allowed.

Why don't you just get back to commenting in the funny picture thread?
I'm only quoting this so I can laugh at it again. 🤣🤣🤣.

@kcult has won the internet today

Jessie Jones reds
Nathan’s or Hebrew National browns
But @S4f has a strong argument regarding the slaw and chili. They can ruin the best hotdogs quickly.
Some of the best hot dog(s) ever were the Jesse Jones hot dogs sold at Martinsville Speedway.
Other notable hot dogs are at Skeeter's World Famous Hot Dogs in Wytheville, VA and the Blue Ridge Grill in Galax, VA.
But, The Roanoke Weiner Stand in Roanoke, VA on the market had the best hot dogs ever. It was a tiny place ran by a Greek gentleman. The fixed hot dogs on one side and on the other side of the room was a shelf that ran across the wall. Here, you could stand and eat your hot dog and drink a short Coke. They had a sign that said "We can serve 1000 people a day, 10 at a time." 10 people was the capacity of the place.

I don't purport that they are the same, but the hot dogs at Grits and Groceries in Chesterfield, SC, have a striking resemblance to what you're describing.

My wife and daughter love a "Grits hot dog."
