Top Gun: Maverick

Not read a post in here since my last one. And not doing it today/now.
Just bought [cues up Eddie Money] TWO TICKETS TO PARA...I mean, TOP GUN

Were going at 12.10 today, first time in a theater in a LONG time. I think the last thing I saw was Once Upon a Time in Holywood

We watched it this past weekend.

It was good. The cinematography was excellent and the story line was just believable enough to not be incredulous.

Really got a half chub in the beginning when they rocked danger zone launching from the carrier.

That said, there were things I thought were a little ridiculous. The officers fighting and not shutting up in front of a superior officer.

The rooster/hangman dynamic that was a watered down maverick/iceman dynamic and far less believable.

So well worth the watch but I think they missed the mark on excellent.

Humorous and NSFW analysis of TG:M (and I think mostly true...)

I avoided reading this thread until tonight since I just saw it. I was thinking how much the left would hate this movie. Everyone in the movie has worked hard to excel at what they do. Even the guy who was sort of a victim still overcame his setback. People making sacrifices for their country, not needing handouts to get by, comraderie with their peers, teaching people to overcome what they thought couldn’t be done…

Saw it yesterday (Father's Day gift). I have needed a bit to process. My thoughts:

1. Excellent movie, can easily be a stand-alone (if you did not see Top Gun, you can watch this without being totally lost).
2. The aerial scenes are some of the best aerial photography, ever. What they did with the actors in the back of the AC was phenomenal. Real G's.
3. The number of cringe-worthy moments regarding 'real' Navy were much fewer than the original, but still there.
4. They did a good job with back stories, but some leaps of imagination are required.
5. I wish I could run a bar and afford a rare Porsche 911, a sailboat, and near-beach property.
6. The Iceman/Mav scenes were golden. A very nice way to include Val Kilmer.

Those are my first thoughts. Definitely want to see it again.

Added, #7: We have no F-14s left in inventory. Every F-14 is a museum piece. I have NO clue how they did all of that F-14 stuff, but it was awesome.

My brother and I saw it last weekend, and really enjoyed it. Ditto the above comments about Val Kilmer.

One thing that I was surprised by (and pleased to learn) was that Tom Cruise owns the P51D Mustang that was used in the movie. He bought it around 10 years ago and was the actual pilot flying it in the movie.

The D models are uncommon as they are the only 2 seat P51's (instructor version). Most are single seat.

Ward Carroll (former F-14 RIO) and Jell-O (Fighter Pilot podcast, former Topgun instructor) deconstruct the movie:

Ward is cool and all, but damn he needs to learn to condense his videos. I ain't listening to him jabber on for an hour. Hell, I wouldn't listen to myself jabber for an hour!

Combination of CGI and a real Tomcat that's a display piece. I believe they dismounted it, hauled it to a studio and filmed around it.

He owns that plane, the motorcycle, and the Porsche.

I will put on his vids at work and 'watch' while I work on other stuff. But no, I can't just sit and watch.

I have not met him in person, but we've communicated via email (I emailed him about something in one of his novels). Super nice, just...chatty.

Thanks. I am sure CGI had a lot to do with it. It was well done. They did a lot right with it (start up procedure, instrumentation, circuit breakers, etc.). I was impressed.

I’ve watched several interviews with Jennifer. She wasn’t supposed to fly at all. Tom talked her into doing that scene after they’d already started filming.

That's a good question to which I had no answer, so I googled it: http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-amarc.htm

We have none in Navy inventory, and no plan to reintroduce it (which is really sad given the projected Super Tomcat they were supposed to have).

I guess none were flyable?? Dunno.

weird, they usually keep old planes like that around for target practice (like they did with the phantoms)

My understanding just based on what I have read (so, at face value) is that since Iran is the only other country who has them, the US wanted no parts to get to them, so part of their decommissioning (inactivation?) was that they could be used in museums or as stationary 'memorials' (props), but would never be made to be airworthy airframes again.

In the case of the Phantoms, dozens of countries had them and were flying them until recently and you could get parts from a number of vendors, but given that Iran is part of the Axis of Evil and all, they get no leftover F-14 parts.

I love the F-14, and fondly recall when they still flew. I hate that they were retired, but kinda, sorta get the argument why.

sadly makes sense

The biggest nail in the Tomcat's coffin was the ratio of flight hours to maintenance hours. I believe it was as high as 1:40 when they finally pulled the plug. For every hour spent flying it required 40 hours of TLC.

We lost all hope of a Tomcat coming back to life when Snort died. He was an advocate of bringing one back to airshow worthiness.

A 'gotcha!' media outlet actually used FOIA requests and tried to 'gotcha!' that the Navy was actually involved lol:

Some of the comments are funnier than hell.
Lol, I guess they didn't sit through the credits?!!!

Saw it a couple nights ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had watched the original the week before with my kids so they would have more back story, so it was also fresh in my mind.

There were a few minor things I wish were different but don't want to post any spoilers :).

This weekend is “fan appreciation” showings. The movie came back to some theaters that had already phased it out. You get a connotative poster and a few extra minutes of behind the scenes footage prior. And a personal thanks from Tom.

This is the first movie I’ve ever seen twice in the theater.

Here’s the poster.

That poster is sick!

I like it. I’ll watch it as much as the first one. Saw it twice in theaters. Watched it twice back to back this week. Once on paramount+ then on 4K dvd to compare quality. I’m not the right person to gauge these things. I saw no noticeable difference but enjoyed the movie both times.

Bought it for $9.99 in 4K last week. Need to watch it again at home.

As I've made known earlier, I can't stand Tom Cruise and therefore had no intention of watching Maverick.

But you know what happens when your youngest daughter wants to watch it with you?

That's right...you sit your *ss down and watch the movie.

I enjoyed it very much, which surprised me. Now I want to watch it again with one of my brothers who flew F-4s in the Marines and went to Top Gun himself. I can't wait to do an MST 3000 session with him over this movie!

In the meantime, here's the Pitch Meeting for the movie and How It Should Have Ended:
