Top Gun: Maverick

I half-cheered, half-laughed when that happened. Totally unexpected.
You really didn’t see that coming? I predicted almost everything at the end…but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. It was all what needed to be done to wrap it up as nice as they did.

No. I was busy trying to figure out how they were gonna land.

It was pretty good.
Without the nostalgia for the original, it would just be a good action movie. Character development was a bit lacking to me.
See your point. But the writers, director, Hollyweird money men and such just threw enough action and fight scenes to make up for its lacking areas and such. This actually was a movie kinda like many 80’s movies were … watch it and if you don’t look to deep into the plot you walk out having a great time.

And as to character development … Hangman shoulda been Maverick’s son from 1986 or something.

Maybe that is part of the homage to the original. :D

Most impressive stunt in the new movie:

59 year old man running hard a couple hundred yards in the snow wearing flight-suit gear. ;)

For some perspective on this movie…. take a look at this scene from The Firm (1993). And this pic from Top Gun Maverick.

In both pics, there is a 59 year old man. In the top pic, Wilford is 59 in ‘93.
Tom Cruise is obviously an alien who got the aging part wrong.

Watched the movie last night. Pretty good movie. Planes scenes were excellent. I will say I am a Jon Hamm fan from the Mad Men series, though I felt Tom Skerritt played a better role as a commander in the original movie. The 2 black fellows seemed to do a good part in their roles too. Overall, I'll watch it again, just for the plane scenes.

I thought they did an awesome job pulling at the heartstrings re. the relationships between Mav and the others in some of the scenes. Guess I'm just a softy but I was wiping my face a couple of times.

Now show this ^^ to your Wife/GF and she will go see it with you.

Makes you wonder what year model that Porsche is... 😉 wink wink

I forgot to add...for an aviation enthusiast (nerd) like myself, the movie paid attention to obvious details like pilots wearing the oxygen masks and not popping them off to "get more air." Other little nuances that made it more believable like Mav's bailout gear needing to be disconnected when he tries to run from the Hind helo. Of course, some of the aerobatics were a little beyond the threshold of reality, but then again, this is Pete Mitchell we're talking about. His exploits are legendary.

Went and saw it Sunday evening. I am in the meh camp. It was okay but not one I will watch again. Seemed to me to be more of a remake than a sequel. Some of the characters were good, though

Was his wingman right on his wing? Or were they shooting down enemy fighters with inert blue tipped missiles?

Saw it last night. I truly enjoyed it, my wife got teary. We are of an age (49/50) where the original came out when we were teens, so it (original) had a big impact.

I LOVED the lack of obvious CGI and absence of agenda. The only agenda-y thing was that the bad guys weren’t overtly Russian/ISIS/Chinese

It would have been Iran if we were pretending to be real world. They still have a dying fleet of a dozen Tomcats or so.

Also, I believe Mav's flight jacket with all the patches was digitally altered from its original which showed something to do with Taiwan protection, I believe. So as to not aggravate our Chinese overlords.

No inert ord visible. Matter of fact, the GBU's were visible with guidance heads. Even showed "remove before flight" pins/flags being removed as they were stealing the Tomcat. Even the Tomcat boot sequence seemed real to me (with the starter cart).

I stand corrected: they put Mav's jacket back to original (I thought it looked fine in the movie) depsite Chinese "backer" fussing.

Go to 3:05 in this clip:

I would love to make something that China doesn't like because it "showcases the American military."

F YEAH...TEAM AMERICA!!!

Ward Carroll, retired Cdr and former F-14 RIO has some great vids on YouTube, he has a video critiquing the movie. He pays attention to a lot of the little things.

As I understand there's still a good bit of CGI. Maybe...just better?

I'm comparing to something like a Marvel movie where it's almost entirely CGI backgrounds, effects, etc.

Well, yeah. I don’t think they actually shot fighter jets out of the sky when making the movie. 😝

No did they USN launch a couple dozen Tomahawks for the fun of it. 😳

I read an article/review that mentioned the CGI, said there had been a dispute among some reviewers about what was real vs what was CGI because the CGI was just that good. That was was I was (poorly) getting at.

I just watched that review yesterday. I was surprised, but an endorsement from the Drinker means it should be good.
The drinker is the best movie reviewer out on youtube, hands down (other than his take on the new Dune ;) ). I am actually looking forward to this movie now. I don't expect to love it, but it should be fun to see.

This is a pretty good collection of interviews with a lot of people (just no Maverick).

Just under 20 minutes, and most of it entertaining. I didn’t realize it was only being held up because they wanted full theaters. I thought there had been post-prod delays due to pandemic work (or lack thereof).

It was perfect mindless fun. Lots of good eye candy. Don't think too much about the plot or "reality." Saw it in a big IMAX theater and enjoyed it. Throwback to when movies were truly a temporary escape from the day to day BS.

I'm not saying I'm going to go search for this movie based on your answer, but does she free the sweater puppies in that?

I shoot womp rats at 200 meters.

Did anyone get the major Star Wars copy even using the force vs the laser.

I'm not sure I've seen Jennifer Conoley look better in my lifetime.
I forgot about that. Two bombs down the unprotected vent shaft. I’ve heard that one before.

The wife and I were thinking about going today or tomorrow but all of the IMAX and 4DX (or whatever it is) were already sold out. Is it worth seeing in a regular theater?

Yes. Don’t sit on the front row...

Regular would be ok.

But the Dolby Cinema (not IMAX) at your local AMC is the way to go!
