Top Gun: Maverick

Saw TGM last weekend when it opened in Abu Dhabi. I enjoyed it. In both movies that bar they are in is called the I-Bar. Been a Naval aviation hangout since the 1930s. Got a naval friend in San Diego that went there Friday night. The rule thing in the movie is real. Ensign got it with breaking a rule of having a cell phone on the bar. 35 rounds at $6.50 each for $227.50!

Those are rules in every O club. Cover, cell phone, use of certain phrases, wearing your cover as soon as you cross the threshold. Yeah, ask me how I know 😒 .

It was perfect mindless fun. Lots of good eye candy. Don't think too much about the plot or "reality." Saw it in a big IMAX theater and enjoyed it. Throwback to when movies were truly a temporary escape from the day to day BS.

Per the video I posted above, apparently when the technical advisors bitched about some things the directors said that it was a movie, not a documentary.

Almost had that called on me as a little kid. Went in the Orlando Navy Base's O-Club with a friend's dad that was an officer. Had my hat on. Thankfully it was mid-afternoon and the place wasn't busy, but the bartender made a helluva ruckus about it. I had to leave the club (think I was just looking for a soda or something--it was a July 4th celebration or something, it was hot). Didn't end up having to pay, but it left a mark in my mind!

I have been to the I Bar at NAS North Island (in the movie), as well as the bars at the officers' club at Camp Pendleton, Camp Lejeune, Pensacola, and NAS Oceana near Va Beach. I was good at remembering the rules, except Pensacola. I walked in with my cover in my hand and set it on the bar so I could put my cell phone in my pocket. It wasn't super expensive, about $50 from what I remember, but I never made that mistake again.

Pic is O Club Pensacola, right after officer school, and right after I paid my debt. These two guys were our instructors.

Supposedly Paramount has been hit with a lawsuit by the family of the pilot who the story is based on. Something about the copyright dates and the release date vs production date falling when Paramount‘s rights ended January 24th 2020. They could actually have to stop the showing of the film if things go full on lawsuit harsh.

You'd think this is easily verified or denied with a simple reading of the law and/or contract/paperwork. I believe it's true about the 35-year reversion of copyright, but there's got to be a mechanism for the entity to retain rights. So did they do that or no?

I would guess Paramount will settle for a minor sum of money to them and the family will move on.

Small piece of trivia....Kelly McGillis is a full time resident of Henderson County here in WNC. I know people that know her who say she's pretty cool and down to earth type.

I remember a news story a couple years ago where she had a random/weird home invasion.

Had no idea. Today I would walk right by her and not know who she was (she probably prefers that).

Time has not been kind to her. She got sober and put on some weight and from what I read is happy not being part of Hollywood as an actress. She said that no one from the new film reached out to her about being part of the film. I read somewhere Val Kilmer had to beg to be included. Edited out comment: I think it is kind of BS that they allowed Val Kilmer to appear in the film after extensive lobbying but didn't find role for Kelly McGillis. She claimed its because she is too old and fat.

Kilmer had something with his throat. I thought I heard she had some health issues but I don't remember. I tell you this, though: she looks like hell, and I am not saying that to be mean. She really does not look well.

"I am a home person. I'm really rooted in my home life ... I can't remember the last time I worked," she said, telling ET that she was diagnosed with alpha one antitrypsin disorder about five years ago. "I feel really blessed that I don't have to work, you know? But I get the option to work, so I'm really blessed in that way. Not many people get that option later in life, so I feel very lucky."

Val Klimer had/has throat cancer.

That's exactly opposite of what others say (i.e. Tom Cruise). He said he wouldn't have one the movie without Val. When his throat stuff happened, they struggled to keep him a part of it, and succeeded (in my opinion).

Regarding using Kelly McGillis, I'm not sure there's an AI/CGI good enough to make that work. I mean no disrespect to her (she said it herself). But it is what it is.

To be fair, SHE said that "I'm too old and fat, I'm what a person my age is supposed to look like...". It doesn't seem like she was upset by the exclusion

I agree. Those are her words but there is a huge double standard when it comes to actors and actresses over 40.

I can't find what I'm thinking of--maybe I dreamed it. I swear there's a video or quote out there of Tom saying the only way he'd do the sequel was if Val was in it.

I take Val's comments to be slightly tongue in cheek. Hence the quotes on the word begged.

Either way they fit him into the story. It work.

Humorous and NSFW analysis of TG:M (and I think mostly true...)

"Leftists are already mad that a non-woke movie that doesn’t violate human nature with woke lectures, woke perversion, woke revisionism, and woke emasculation, is not only breaking records but being embraced by wingnuts like me."

Well, CRUD!

I just may have to start liking Tom Cruise just for this.

Box office numbers are pretty wild on this one, considering it’s not being released in China or Russia. I think I read it was the lowest (29%) drop from first weekend to second for any movie that made >$100M. Most are >50% drops.

It’s also screwing up advance online tickets for Jurassic World: Dominion. AMC pulled almost all their showing for next weekend…and I’m assuming they’re waiting to see how this coming weekend goes before allocating screens.

The wife, daughter and I watched it today in Regal 4Dx and it was pretty cool. The sent and water blaster in front of me were broken, but the wifey and daughter got the full effect. I really enjoyed the movie. It was so nostalgic for me. It just reminded me of a good 80’s movie. Over the top in places, but a feel good movie in general.

I saw it Wednesday afternoon. Loved it!!!

Saw the original 40K times with my kids. I bought a VHS (yes, that long ago) and they watched it over and over and over...

The tie-ins to the original were well done.

I'm not quite sure this is the end though. The writers left some open ends that could be spun to another or, like "Star Wars", a franchise. I hope not.
