News reports say at least 16 dead, 60 injured at 2 locations in Lewiston and 1 in Augusta. Shooter(s) on the loose.
Based on some of the local groups I’m in, I think it’s one shooter that’s going to multiple locations. Taking it with a grain of salt but some posts are implying it’s a veteran of 20 years. Again it’s too early to get solid details.

Since that’s your stomping grounds, what are the gun laws like up there?

Constitutional Carry is the big one. Unsure of the situation at the bowling alley in terms of concealed. No magazine restrictions, Maine was probably one of the last (other than NH) in terms of pretty lax regulation on gun laws compared to the rest of New England. The Governor (Mills) is unfortunately very left leaning and will probably use this to attempt to backpedal a lot of the the current laws that are pro second amendment. Have a friend that lives 3 miles from the place and said the shooter went to 2 other locations.

Yep, locals called it either “dirty lew” or “little Somali” jokes aside regardless of what it’s nicknamed it doesn’t deserve what happened.

I spent a lot of time in Lewiston back in the early 90s, mostly close to campus and usually half drunk.
No real complaints at that time, just a typical old NE textil town with a poser/quasi elite college campus.

I’m going to a bowling alley this weekend. I’d love for some dumb little kitty with a gun to try and break up that party.

Oh no he’s gotta gun.

So do the 10 of us.

Maine is pretty rural and has an outdoor culture. I know it’s New England and Lewiston is a larger metropolitan area for Maine, but how is it that no one good Maniac was not packing and took him/them out? Sad and/or odd.

It’s cleaned up a little as of late but it’s been known as a in polite terms high crime area.

I could be wrong but I believe if alcohol is served at the location you couldn’t legally carry. That being said I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a gun free zone either.

Like you said, legally, 3 different crime scenes and lots of folks. I am saddened he didn‘t get capped by some 19 year old Eagle Scout with balls.

Oh I completely agree, unfortunately from the sounds of it and as it usually goes the areas were soft targets in a more city landscape rather than rural area. As with most cities (especially in the slowly left leaning state of Maine) You’re less likely to find a good guy with a gun that will do something.

Robert Card was allegedly once committed to a mental health facility

The Maine Informantion & Analysis Center reveals that suspect Robert Card recently reported mental health issues. They were described as "hearing voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco, ME". According to the center, he was even committed to a "mental health facility for two weeks" this past summer.

More background on Robert Card, main suspect in Lewiston mass shooting

Who is Robert Card? Card is believed to be a trained firearms instructor. The former member of the Army reserve was stationed out of Saco, Maine.

According to local government, Card recently reported mental health issues including hearing voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard base in Saco. He was also reported to have been committed to a mental health facility for 2 weeks in the summer of 2023.

Once again, the "prohibited person" restrictions did not work.

That has changed now as long as you are not drinking you can carry concealed.
Just goes to show that the idiots who come up with the “laws” clearly don’t understand who the dangerous ones and the safe ones are. If you can’t be trusted to have a gun after a couple of beers, you can’t be trusted with a gun at all. Not necessarily a exact quote but Massad Ayoob.

Is that a msr or a tactical stock shotgun with a box mag? Or .308 / ar10?
I'm guessing MSR with coupled 30-round mags based on the super grainy pics so far.

after university i took some criminal justice classes for fun at the local community college (police academy was there along with fire dept training). After class one day some of us were at the bar drinking beers with the instructors (former atf, former swat and police captain, etc) and we were saying something about carry laws.
One of the retired cops said "why, you guys aren't carrying now are you?" and when a couple of us froze a little and mumbled "um..." he was like "i didn't ask that, nobody needs to say anything. we're all fine"
That was one of the very few times i really got to understand being "in the club" and some of how the blue wall works.

Completely fits the narrative they're seeking. Crazy white man, veteran, msr, standard capacity mags. It checks all their boxes. They'll likely use this to the fullest extent possible.

It'll be interesting to find out, if we ever do, how he got the weapon used. Maine does have what they call a "yellow flag" law. Similar to a "red flag" but from my limited reading, not quite as extreme. Basically, there has to be proof of danger to self/others, not just hearsay.

We'll see what laws that are already in effect that were violated and watch for new ones to further restrict people without affecting criminals.

Don't worry, Brady/Everytown is already on it

Now let’s look at what the other hand is doing. Supreme Court has been shooting down gun restrictions left and right, pistol brace rule was likely to get squashed, WW3 about to kick off, and all of a sudden, this. If they guy was having mental issues to the point that he was hearing voices, threatened to do this, and was even committed, why was he walking around, and why was he allowed to be armed? Lots of questions and again balls dropped.
