What to do in Raleigh

He’s not wrong. For the money you can get better barbecue just about anywhere.

But he won’t be anywhere. He’ll be in Raleigh. Plus their chili is pretty darn good. And they do more than just pulled pork. They have some variety. Unlike many places.

Guess you are a little sensitive. There was no reference to ‘up there’. And where I grew up, ‘up there’, there was jack shit to do in the city as well.

Might want to get some help for that. Might affect your relations with others. :D
Just poking the bear, akin to Ford vs Chevy.
geez... don’t be so sensitive! :D

“Plus their (Pit) chili is pretty darn good.” Just had that recently, it’s good of you like sweet food. It tastes like they added a common bbq sauce.

I meant anywhere in Raleigh. Literally anywhere is better. Some gas stations serve better bbq than the pit.

And less anti-gun sentiment. The owner is so anti that he had custom “no firearms” signs made as a dig to the fact the NC Capitol and Legislative bld. don’t have to post, but he does.

Please list them for us. I love b’cued food and would like to try them out. Hard to find good ribs, brisket and chicken sometimes.

Big Al's, 401 near Rolesville, good brisket. Ribs are really tasty but they leave the silverskin on - so the rib side is a little crisp. It's not bad but not what I do personally. My former employer used to buy everyone Clyde Coopers once a month, as i recall that was really good, but I haven't had any in 5 years so don't hold me to anything. I've heard good things about Smokey's on Chapel Hill Rd just north of McCrimmon parkway. aven't been able to partake because they lines are always longer than I want to wait. But usually if I want good bbq I just do it myself...

Even after his "no guns" sign didn't prevent an armed couple from threatening his staff, he didn't relent, just doubled-down. He has also been a really big anti supporter.

Like I said, the place hasn't been the same since Ed left, and that was something like 8 years ago. IMO it lives on it's reputation anymore.

Thanks. I’ll try those out when I get a chance. But they are not gas stations. ;)

Redneck bbq lab in benson is pretty good. It shares the building with a gas station. I think they have burnt ends on Tuesday and Saturday. The sandwich called the boss is really good, burnt ends, some kind of cheese, and jalapeño sausage.

@random and @Traceround I made a point to do some real science while stuck all weekend at the convention center.

Had lunch at the Pit Saturday. I had a fried chicken sandwich and my wife had the grilled chicken sandwich. Both were very good. Wife had a cup of Brunswick Stew that wasn’t great and I had potato salad that was OK.

We had dinner there with friends tonight. My buddy is also a great home cook and b’cue fanatic. I had their Carolina Style ribs. Whatever that means. Skin was left on back, meat was blah and sauce was generic. No bueno. Friend’s brisket was not good according to him. Flavorless and fatty. Wife’s chili was good and his wife had a burger she said wasn’t as good as he cooks at home.

So you guys may just be onto something here. I’d eat their chili and sandwiches, but the rest is not impressive. But the seat was comfortable and I was out of the convention center so it gets point for that at least. :p

Yeah, The Pit totally sucks.

Danny's is half the price and better in every way. So is City BBQ, imo.

Is that the Danny’s in Cary? Haven’t been there in a while if so. It was always edible but never great.

City B’cue is not great. Their brisket is tender but tastes steamed or something. No smoke flavor or rub. I think the problem is that most of the local ‘cue joint have big ass commercial cookers. Gotta find those shacks with 50 year old steel or brick cookers with the proper amount of seasoning. :D

Exactly. But they are both better than The Pit.

But I can walk to the Pit from the convention center and get away from thousands of screaming teenage girls. And they have beverages if needed. Adult ones.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'll happily choke down some food from The Pit by the pound.

I wouldn't need much of an excuse, either! One screaming teenage girl would be plenty for me to bail.

There are a few pizza joints and a Jimmy John’s close, so I did pizza one day. Jimmy John’s was banned since an employee at one their stores hit on a 13 year teammate of my daughter’s last week.

No way her Dad was eating at a Jimmy John’s.

Late edit - I saw no gun buster sign at the Pit.

I've eaten at City BBQ once. As we left I told my wife "They got the name right, it's bbq for city folk who don't know any better"

Hmm, that's new

Or take US. 1 south, take a right on US 15-501 south, another right onto NC 24, 27 into Carthage. Go 3/4 of the way around the courthouse to Dowd Street. take Dowd Street to the Pick-N-Pig. Order the sampler platter.
