What's your latest knife project

Im a little jealous of your anvil. All I have is a China 55# that beat to hell.

Recently threw it in the charcoal forge and heated it up so I could weld a plate to the top.

Then I welded a plate over it and ground it down.

Too bad the welds didn't hold and I have to do it again.

I got that anvil when I first started out a few years ago. It’s on the small side but for the size knife I make it’s plenty large. Used anvils are crazy high.

Looks really good. I’ve got that steel in stock but have only used it a few times. How does it forge?
It's quickly becoming my favorite. Forges easy but very forgiving/simple heat treat.

Hammers like 1080 but quenches like 5160.

I don’t know what that means🤔. I’ve got some 5160 and have made some bigger blades with it.
That last small feather damascus blade I did was 1080 and 15N20 and I thought it was difficult to move.
I’m becoming a firm believer that starting off with short billets is not the way to go.

LOL. I hear you.

1080 hammers pretty easy on its own. 15n20 in the mix makes it a little tougher. Or it feels that way to me. 5160 doesn't hammer so easy. That's the steel I started with and when I transitioned to 10 series and 80CRV2 I found out how the other half lived lol

Your mark looks cool. But it doesn’t identify who the maker is. There was a lot of discussion about this on another forum - about makers marks.
You might want to consider adding your name or initials to the mark so years down the road - your mark/signature would be unique to you.

Nice, I'm working on my first San Mai blade. If I can get it hot enough to weld.
Don't forget to post some pictures. Can't wait to get out of school so I can give blade making a try.

Well I hammered out a piece of car coil spring into a billet and hammered out a railroad spike into two matching billets and ground them perfectly flat. Then I cleaned them with lacquer thinner to get all the oil off and then welded them together. Fluxed them and put them in the fire and got them as hot as my forge would go. Gave them a few hits to set the welds and right back into the flames. Started hammering them out into a knife shape and...

Failure, the pieces started to slide apart like a PB&J with the peanut butter on both slices of bread. Utter failure and sooo much work lost.

After my last failure I decided to make some more traditional blades.

The first is another Sgain Dubh. Made this from a piece of car spring and experimented with some board glue ups for the handle.

Then I decided to make a big boy.
This one is forged from a Railroad spring clip and is 12" long and nearly 1/4" thick.

The green Micarta scales on this were made by me as well.

@J R Green I wouldn’t say it’s lost time. I’m sure you gained some valuable knowledge in the process. The blades you did after look really nice!

Yall are killin me with these. If I could convince yall to sell em, Id be a broke man. Ive been wanting to get my old boss something nice as a going away/thanks for helping me along/thanks for never firing me gift, and a hand made knife is high on the list.

Man….

Some of you folks are not talented…you are artists and craftsmen. To call you “talented” would be an understatement.

Ya’ll make some mighty fine looking pedophile skinners.👍

Just posted my knife grinder up for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested.

So, not my project build, but my knife. A guy I work with started making knives recently when his father in law (known knife maker in the Fayetteville area) passed away.
I told him the length of the blade, and the overall length i wanted. I need it for cutting rubber and Kevlar cloth at work. I gave him an old file for the metal to use.
This is what he gave me.

It’s been a year but the new shop is ready and I’m turning out knifes - forged and stock removal.
These three knives have been heat treated and tempered and sanded to remove the forging scale. The middle one is sold. The top and bottom knives were forged.
