The quality of the chili and slaw is definitely important when it comes to the hotdogs. But for me it’s more about how the hotdog is cooked rather than red vs brown, etc. steamed/boiled hotdogs just aren’t good.

Steamed in beer is awesome, gives a depth of flavor. I don't care for boiled either.

Jones Lunch in downtown Clayton, NC

Forgot about that place. Hadn’t been there in about twenty years. Old and sorta run down.

And by “old and run down”, I mean "my kind of place".

The Roast Grill in downtown Raleigh. Tiny little joint on a side street. Been there forever. A little Greek lady ran it, lived upstairs. My wife worked with her grown grandson 30 years ago.

Raleigh politicos would line up next to trash collectors for hot dogs at lunch. No ketchup/catsup/catch-up allowed.
I was going to post this. I worked around the corner restoring Corvettes with @David Hall. We’d show up covered in body putty/fiberglass/grease/oil and have lunch with a politician, a bank president, a restaurant worker, etc.
The old Greek lady made the slaw, Cole slaw from scratch. They had the coldest drinks in town, when opened the surface of the sodas/beer would turn to slush. The place was tiny and packed. When someone, bless their hearts, asked for ketchup, they’d receive a passionate Greek young lashing about no ketchup here.

@Lil D hates red hot dogs, but she loves those big, fat, long extra large Nathan’s wieners

You know you're about to start somethin, right???

I feel like you're waiting for the cork to go under.

Give it a minute.

Is she trying to make for someone's short comings 🤣

In 3-2-1

Absolutely

Almost.

I’ll pretty much put any wiener in my mouth.

Ding ding ding.

Yes you will. It’s why we’re friends

Tortuga or Basement in 3-2-1

Living in Chicago, so I’m kinda biased. In Charlotte, I seem to remember a pretty good chili/slaw/mustard dog at Greens, wonder if they are still around. Inlaws in Raleigh are addicted to Snoopy’s.

This is the same measure / criteria I use for BBQ joints. City slickers would turn their nose up and drive right by B’s, Bunn’s or Skylight Inn, cause they don’t know better! Haha

Did you happen to notice if there were any gallon jugs sitting around with a clear liquid in them?
It’s guise… they are mixed in. Once you pay for your “gallon of water”, you have to go over and shake them and take the one that beads up!

Must be a local to know about Percy’s history!

Red. Bill’s in Washington,NC has the best. Fried in lard. The chili is outstanding.
Used to be a little diner in siler city called Scooters, next to Spence Building Supply, that deep fried their red hots. Best thing in the restaurant

Okay, two separate things I’m reminded of in this thread.

My mom used to heat hot dogs in hot/boiling water. I did not like them as a kid. Wouldn’t eat them. Until I ate one cooked over a fire in Scouts or something. I became an instant fan.

She also steamed okra.
Slimy and disgusting. Just gross.
Didn’t discover I liked okra till I ate it cooked any other way than steamed.

Love Bill’s. For folks wanting to try them .. Hotdogs only! No sides sold there other than bagged chips and homemade banana pudding. We take day trips down just to get some hot dogs and sit by the waterfront. Good stuff.

I also like Warrens, just a skip down 17hwy. Good dogs and good breakfast biscuits and they are a huge supporter of the local high school (Southside HS, in Chocowinity). They will close the restaurant early to go the football games.

Hahaha. Hotdogs that are over boiled get waterlogged and swell up like a marshmallow in the microwave… it’s like eating a giant water soaked packing peanut. Awful!

Fried okra is the DEAL!

Yes, boiled hotdogs…. Ugh. Some time around the time I became a teen, mom discovered you could fry them in a pan, and they were (almost, not quite but almost), like being grilled, she didn’t have to wait on water to boil, and everyone at supper was much happier.

SCNB sold hotdogs prior to the pandemic and they would deep fry them. Not a bad alternative, to the BBQ, on occasion.

The south gets most things right, but not hot dogs or sausages. Having this discussion is just silliness. There are exceptions to every rule, but for the best dogs you’ve got to go to either the NY area or the Midwest. Or just but theirs at Wegman‘s.

There is an interesting little dog shack on 17 heading north out of Mt Pleasant or thereabouts in SC. Dogs are ok, but they have a metric crap ton of relish’s and toppings. Cool joint.

Red hot dogs? Lord help us and forgive us our sins.

Don’t care. The red ones are only red because of food coloring. I eat any of them knowing they are slowly killing me.

If I’m shopping for them, I prefer Sabrett’s 1/4 pound dogs.

How’d you like to be Joey Chestnut’s cardiologist or proctologist? 😱

We used to take the boys when they were little to the small town drug stores that still had lunch counters for hot dogs about 25 years ago.

Fuquay, Cary, Brevard to the west, trying to remember some others.
S&Ts Soda Shop, in Pittsboro, is still selling hotdogs and a full menu of every other kind of food and ice cream you could want.

Yeah, I feel you on this one.

I like my dogs with black char marks on them.

If red food color from hotdogs can kill you, I should have been dead at age 6 and for sure by now. 😁
